Sabritec Micro Twinax connectors are miniature, controlled-impedance connectors designed for balanced, high-speed interconnects—not generic USB plugs or consumer Ethernet cables. Sabritec’s legacy catalog describes NDL, SMA-size and Micro-D package options, with 100-ohm or 150-ohm differential-pair impedance choices, depending on the connector family and interface.
What Sabritec Micro Twinax connectors are
Micro Twinax is a family of compact connectors for carrying balanced differential signals between cables and circuit boards. The design emphasis is controlled impedance and closely spaced PCB footprints. Sabritec’s Full Line Catalog 2004A describes the connectors as matched-impedance, miniaturized parts intended to provide controlled impedance and tightly spaced PCB footprint spacing.
They are components in an interconnect system: the connector, cable, board footprint and mating hardware must suit the electrical interface and mechanical package. They are not interchangeable with USB or ordinary Ethernet plugs simply because an application mentions Ethernet.
Are they suitable for high-speed Ethernet and Fibre Channel?
Sabritec’s product overview identifies its differential Twinax and Quadrax connectors, contacts and cable assemblies for high-speed Ethernet and Fibre Channel applications. The Fibre Channel material describes support for data rates exceeding 2 Gbit/second; the publication year is not stated in the retrieved copy. The 2004A catalog specifically describes the Micro Twinax NDL and SMA packages for Fibre Channel at a minimum of 2 Gbit/sec.

Related Micro Quadrax connectors use four-wire quadrax cable: diagonal conductors form a differential Twinax pair, with a low-impedance ground shield. Sabritec’s catalog material associates related Quadrax families with 1000 Base-T and other high-speed interfaces. These statements describe vendor application positioning, not a guarantee that an arbitrary connector-and-cable combination will work with a particular Ethernet or Fibre Channel implementation.
Impedance: choose for the interface, not the connector size
The 2004A catalog lists 100-ohm and 150-ohm differential-pair impedance options. The Fibre Channel series is described with true differential-pair connectors and 150-ohm cable types. The appropriate impedance depends on the signaling interface and the cable design; matching the connector alone is not enough. Confirm the full channel requirements, including cable, terminations, PCB layout and mating parts, before selecting a part.

How NDL, SMA-size and Micro-D packages differ
| Package | What the catalog describes | Selection consideration |
|---|---|---|
| NDL Micro Twinax | Described as replacing standard NDL Triax for higher-speed balanced Twinax applications; the catalog also describes Fibre Channel use at a minimum of 2 Gbit/sec. | Consider when the design must fit the NDL package envelope and needs a balanced Twinax connection. |
| SMA-size Micro Twinax | Uses a standard SMA housing envelope while preserving balanced differential impedance; the catalog describes Fibre Channel use at a minimum of 2 Gbit/sec. | Check the exact mating interface and differential electrical requirements; an SMA-size housing does not make every conventional SMA part electrically interchangeable. |
| Micro-D Micro Twinax | Intended for Micro-D packaging constraints. | Consider when the connector must fit a Micro-D form factor; verify the specific footprint, contacts and cable termination. |
The catalog describes straight and right-angle variants across the family. Fibre Channel offerings are described in cable-mount and PCB-mount forms, as well as quick-disconnect forms. Availability of each combination should be confirmed against the required part specification.
What to confirm before specifying or buying
- Identify the interface and target impedance. Establish whether the design calls for 100-ohm or 150-ohm differential signaling, and check that the connector, cable and board implementation are designed together.
- Set the mechanical envelope. Choose among NDL, SMA-size and Micro-D constraints based on the equipment and mating hardware—not the name alone.
- Choose mounting and routing. Determine whether the installation needs PCB mount, straight cable, right-angle cable or quick-disconnect construction.
- Verify mating and environmental requirements. Confirm the exact connector series, contact arrangement, cable type, footprint and operating conditions with the relevant product documentation and supplier.
- Check current product status and sourcing. The cited material is legacy catalog and brochure content. It establishes historical product descriptions and specifications, but not current production, stock, pricing or authorized distributor status. Confirm these directly with Sabritec/Smiths Connectors or a qualified interconnect supplier before committing a design.
What the published specifications do—and do not—establish
The vendor material supports the product-family description, package types, impedance choices and cited Fibre Channel applications. It does not establish current availability or provide enough detail to identify a suitable orderable part for every design. Treat the catalog as a starting point for narrowing the package and electrical requirements, then use current part-specific drawings and supplier confirmation for the final selection.
