A spinner or progress bar tells people that work is underway; it does not tell them that the task succeeded. When processing ends, remove the transient indicator and show a clear result—success, failure, or a next step. Choose progress feedback that reflects what the system can actually measure, and expose status changes to assistive technology without moving focus.

Choose a progress indicator that tells the truth

Use a determinate indicator when the work has a meaningful, measurable amount of progress. Use an indeterminate indicator when you cannot quantify how much remains. The distinction matters: a percentage or estimate implies knowledge the system may not have. Apple’s progress-indicator guidance recommends switching from indeterminate to determinate progress if the remaining work becomes measurable.

  • Measurable work: Show a bar or other determinate indicator, and update it to reflect actual advancement.
  • Unquantifiable work: Use an indeterminate indicator to signal activity without suggesting a completion time.

Make the label more specific than “Loading” when you can: “Uploading files” or “Generating report” explains what is happening. Do not make a bar race to a high percentage and then linger. Apple warns that showing 90 percent completion in five seconds and taking five minutes for the last 10 percent can feel deceptive; those numbers are an illustrative example, not a measured user study.

Make completion a distinct state

An activity indicator is temporary: Apple describes progress indicators as appearing while an operation is ongoing and disappearing when it completes. The interface therefore needs to show what happened after the indicator ends. Confirm the result—for example, that changes were saved, an export is ready, or an import finished—rather than leaving users to infer success from a vanished spinner.

If the task fails, say that it did not finish and give a useful recovery action, such as retrying or correcting an input. If it stalls, explain what has stopped progressing and what the user can do next. W3C defines status messages to include waiting, progress, success or results, and errors. Its recommendation to provide clear success or failure feedback for user actions is supplemental cognitive-accessibility guidance, not a separate WCAG requirement.

Match feedback and controls to the task

A quick save may need only a concise confirmation. A longer task calls for ongoing status, and perhaps controls. Microsoft notes that text can communicate the status of work that does not need to remain visible all the time; see its Windows progress-control guidance.

  • Can progress be measured? Use determinate progress only when the measurement is meaningful; otherwise use an indeterminate indicator.
  • Can the user safely interrupt the work? Offer cancellation when interruption is safe. If cancellation could discard useful partial work, consider whether pausing is more appropriate. Apple discusses these choices in its progress-indicator guidance.
  • Does the task run in the background? Keep its status understandable even when the user is not watching the screen. Microsoft’s guidance notes that text can be useful for status that need not remain continuously visible.
  • What happened at the end? Distinguish success, failure, and a stall, and provide a next step where appropriate.

Announce status changes without taking focus

WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 4.1.3 requires status messages in markup to be programmatically determinable through roles or properties so assistive technologies can present them without receiving focus. It covers messages about waiting, progress, success or results, and errors when they do not change context. Read the WCAG 2.1 criterion and W3C’s explanation of status messages.

For a concise status such as “Report exported,” W3C’s informative ARIA22 technique demonstrates role="status". The role has an implicit polite live setting and an atomic default, but some environments may not treat its contents as atomic. Add aria-atomic="true" when the complete message should be announced.

A visual progress bar needs additional care. W3C’s informative ARIA25 technique demonstrates a separate live region for progress text. Updating aria-valuenow on an element with role="progressbar" does not, by itself, make that element a live region; the changed value may not be announced as it changes. Keep spoken progress updates useful and restrained. The technique illustrates the mechanism but does not prescribe a universal announcement frequency.

Routine progress should not move focus. Reserve assertive alerts for genuinely urgent interruptions: W3C identifies using assertive alerts for non-urgent content as a common failure pattern in its status-message guidance.

Make multi-step work easy to resume

For an import, setup flow, or other multi-step task, show which steps are complete, which one is current, and what remains. Where choices or prerequisites matter, make them visible too. This helps people reorient after distraction instead of having to guess how far the process has gone. W3C presents this approach in its Make Each Step Clear cognitive accessibility pattern; it is supplemental guidance, not a WCAG conformance requirement.
