Choose the Ryzen 7 5800X3D if gaming is your priority and the extra cost makes sense for the games you play: its much larger cache can deliver substantial gains in some titles. Choose the Ryzen 7 5800X if it costs meaningfully less, you value its higher listed clock speeds and overclocking support, or your games are unlikely to benefit from extra cache. Both are eight-core AM4 processors that use DDR4, but the right value depends on your current prices, graphics card, resolution, motherboard and BIOS, cooler, and workload.
Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs. 5800X: specifications
The defining difference is cache, not core count: both processors have eight cores and 16 threads, but the 5800X3D has three times the L3 cache. The 5800X, in turn, has higher official base and maximum boost clocks.

How much faster is the 5800X3D for gaming?
There is no single uplift that applies to every game or PC. The larger cache can help when a game benefits from keeping more data close to the processor, especially when the system is CPU-limited. If the graphics card is the bottleneck, or the game does not benefit much from the extra cache, the gap can be small.

AMD said in its March 15, 2022 launch announcement that the 5800X3D delivered “15% more gaming performance compared to processors without stacked cache technology.” That is AMD’s launch-period claim, not a promise for every game or a direct prediction for a particular buyer’s system. The same release gave a historical starting SEP of $449 USD and an April 20, 2022 on-shelf date; neither figure establishes a current price or availability. AMD’s launch announcement
What a direct comparison found
In TechSpot’s 2022 head-to-head, conducted with DDR4-3800 CL16, an MSI X570S Carbon Max WiFi motherboard, Resizable BAR, and a GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, the 5800X3D was up to 27% faster in Fortnite at 1080p and 1440p. In Assetto Corsa Competizione, the review reported up to 43% higher average frame rate and up to 53% better 1% lows. By contrast, it found little change in Apex Legends and particularly limited gains in Dying Light 2 at 1440p or above. These results describe that review’s setup and tests; they are not guaranteed results for other GPUs, settings, games, or systems. Read TechSpot’s 5800X3D vs. 5800X test.

- Powerful Gaming Performance
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 3" architecture
- 4.8 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 36 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the AMD Socket AM4 platform, with PCIe 4.0 support
- AMD Wraith Prism Cooler with RGB LED included
What that means for your games
Compare the titles you actually play at your target resolution and settings. Higher resolution can shift more of the work to the graphics card, limiting the benefit of a faster CPU. Frame-rate targets matter too: someone trying to maintain very high frame rates in a CPU-sensitive game may value an uplift that makes little difference to a player with a lower target. The TechSpot results do not support assigning a guaranteed percentage to your own system.
Which processor is the better buy?
Choose the Ryzen 7 5800X3D for a gaming-focused AM4 upgrade
The 5800X3D is the stronger fit if you already have a compatible AM4 motherboard and DDR4 memory, gaming is your main concern, and the games you play benefit from its larger cache. It is most compelling when the price premium is acceptable and your current graphics card and settings leave room for CPU performance to matter.

- 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
Choose the Ryzen 7 5800X when the price or features suit you better
The 5800X is a sensible option if it is meaningfully cheaper, if you want its higher listed base and boost clocks, or if your workload does not justify paying extra for the X3D model. AMD lists overclocking support for the 5800X; the 5800X3D product page does not describe that model as unlocked. Clock specifications alone do not establish that the 5800X is faster for every task, and the cited comparison does not provide a broad productivity benchmark assessment.
For a new build, compare the whole platform
If you need a motherboard as well as a processor, compare the total cost of the platform rather than the CPU prices alone. The available price information here is historical launch pricing, not a current platform-price comparison. Neither processor includes a cooler, so include a replacement only if you lack one or your existing cooler is inadequate.

Check motherboard, BIOS, and cooling before you buy
Confirm the exact motherboard and BIOS
Both processors use AM4, but a matching socket does not by itself prove that a particular board supports a particular CPU. AMD lists X570, X470, B550, B450, and A520 among the 5800X3D’s supported chipsets. That chipset list does not certify every motherboard model, board revision, or BIOS version. Before buying an upgrade, check the manufacturer’s CPU support list for your exact board and confirm the required BIOS version. If a BIOS update is needed, follow the board manufacturer’s instructions before removing the current processor.
Check the cooler you already own
Neither CPU ships with a thermal solution. AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal 5800X3D performance and premium air cooling for optimal 5800X performance. Whether you need a new cooler depends on the one you own and its condition, mounting compatibility, cooling capacity, and fit inside your case; verify those details rather than assuming either processor requires a particular new purchase.

- Check the actual current price of each CPU, including any difference in total platform cost if you need a motherboard.
- Identify your most-played games and whether you are typically CPU- or GPU-limited at your resolution and settings.
- Decide whether your target frame rate makes CPU-side gains valuable.
- Verify the exact motherboard model, revision, CPU support list, and BIOS version.
- Check whether your existing cooler is adequate and physically fits your case.
- Consider whether the 5800X’s listed overclocking support matters to you.
