For most AM4 gaming upgrades, the used Ryzen 7 5700X3D is the better buy when it costs materially less than a comparable 5800X3D. In Tom’s Hardware’s 2024 1080p test suite, the 5800X3D averaged 9% faster, but its price in that launch-era comparison was 35% higher. Those figures are specific to that review and are not current prices or guaranteed gains on your PC. Choose the 5800X3D when its actual local premium is modest, your games can benefit from the extra performance, and the individual chip and seller check out.
How do the 5800X3D and 5700X3D differ?
Both processors have eight cores, 16 threads, AM4 sockets and 105 W default TDP. The 5800X3D has higher listed clock speeds; AMD describes its cache as 96 MB of L3, while the 5700X3D is listed with 100 MB of total cache. Those cache figures use different labels and should not be treated as directly equivalent measurements.
| Specification | Ryzen 7 5800X3D | Ryzen 7 5700X3D |
|---|---|---|
| Cores / threads | 8 / 16 (AMD) | 8 / 16 (AMD) |
| Base / maximum boost clock | 3.4 GHz / up to 4.5 GHz (AMD) | 3.0 GHz / up to 4.1 GHz (AMD) |
| Cache as specified | 96 MB L3 (AMD) | 100 MB total cache (AMD) |
| Default TDP | 105 W (AMD) | 105 W (AMD) |
| Socket | AM4 (AMD) | AM4 (AMD announcement) |
AMD’s 5800X3D specifications list support for X570, X470, B550, B450 and A520 chipsets. Before buying either CPU, check the motherboard maker’s CPU support page for the exact board and BIOS requirements; chipset compatibility alone does not establish that your board’s installed BIOS supports the processor.

How much faster is the 5800X3D for gaming?
Tom’s Hardware measured the 5800X3D as 9% faster on average than the 5700X3D in its 2024 1080p gaming suite. That result applies to the review’s test system and game selection. The publication notes that the difference can vary by game and GPU, so it is not a promise of a particular frame-rate increase on your setup. The same review’s price comparison showed a 35% premium for the 5800X3D at the time; that is a launch-era comparison, not a current market quote. See Tom’s Hardware’s head-to-head review for its test context.
#1 Best Overall
- The world's fastest gaming desktop processor and first gaming processor with 3D stacking technology
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads with AMD 3D V-Cache technology
- 4.5 GHz Max Boost, 100 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on X570 and B550 motherboards
- Cooler not included, high-performance cooler recommended
The 5700X3D is a sensible value upgrade if you are keeping an AM4 system and want strong gaming performance without paying much more for the 5800X3D. The 5800X3D’s higher clocks and review-measured lead matter most when a game is CPU-limited and the GPU is fast enough that the processor affects frame rates. If your games are GPU-limited, or the 5800X3D costs substantially more, that lead may not justify the price difference.
Which used CPU should you buy?
| Decision factor | Lean toward the 5700X3D when… | Lean toward the 5800X3D when… |
|---|---|---|
| Delivered price | It is materially cheaper than a comparable listing, including shipping, and seller protections are similar. | The price premium is small enough to make the review-reported gaming lead worth paying for. |
| Games and GPU | You want a value-focused AM4 gaming upgrade and do not have a specific reason to pursue the review’s higher result. | Your games are CPU-sensitive and your system can make use of additional CPU performance. |
| Condition and seller | The listing has clear photos, a credible history and acceptable return terms. | The specific chip is in demonstrably good condition and its price still makes sense. |
| Upgrade path | You are keeping your current AM4 motherboard and DDR4 system. | You are also keeping AM4 and value its measured gaming lead; this CPU does not create a newer platform upgrade path. |
Use current local listings rather than old launch prices or stale market reports. A Tom’s Hardware report published August 11, 2025 said the 5700X3D was largely absent from major US retailers and cited used eBay listings starting at $205 at that time; it also reported that the 5800X3D had been discontinued. These are dated observations, not today’s prices or a guide to availability in other countries. A July 7, 2026 Reddit post gave one user’s local examples of about $250 for a used 5700X3D and $370 for a used 5800X3D; those anecdotal prices are not market averages. Compare delivered prices, condition and return terms in your own market instead of treating either report as a price target. The dated availability account is in Tom’s Hardware’s August 2025 report.

What should you check before buying a used chip?
- Verify the exact model. Match the seller’s description and any heat-spreader markings to the intended SKU, rather than relying only on a listing title.
- Ask for clear photos. Request readable photos of the processor and its pins/package so you can inspect for visible damage before purchase.
- Review the return terms. Check the seller’s return window and what protection applies if the chip is not as described or does not work.
- Confirm motherboard support. Check the board maker’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements for your exact motherboard model and revision before removing your existing CPU.
- Test after installation. Confirm the system boots and remains stable under load; if it does not, revisit seating, BIOS support, cooling and the seller’s return process.
Will your existing cooler work?
AMD says the 5800X3D’s thermal solution is not included, lists a 90°C maximum operating temperature (Tjmax), and recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance. Check that your existing cooler is compatible with your case and AM4 mounting setup and is appropriate for your system before buying. AMD’s 5700X3D launch announcement gives its 105 W TDP but does not provide an equivalent product-page cooler recommendation in the cited material. Do not assume a used CPU listing includes a cooler. See AMD’s 5800X3D product page and 5700X3D announcement.
