A Russian attack struck a Liberian-flagged civilian cargo ship at a port in Ukraine’s Odesa Oblast on 3 October 2026, killing one sailor and injuring three others, according to a report by Ukrainska Pravda, which attributed the information to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority. The report identified the sailor killed as a motorman and said all 13 crew members were evacuated to a safe location.
What was reported about the 3 October attack
Ukrainska Pravda’s contemporaneous report, by Roman Petrenko, said Russian forces struck a civilian cargo vessel flying Liberia’s flag at a port in Odesa Oblast. It reported one crew member killed, three injured, and 13 evacuated to safety, citing information from the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority.
The report identified the deceased sailor as a motorman. It did not name the vessel or specify its cargo, the weapon used, or the extent of damage. No independently verified account of the attack circumstances is established in the sources available for this report.
How this differs from other recent vessel attacks
Separate attacks on civilian or commercial vessels were reported in September. They involved different dates, ships, flags, and casualties:

What the wider port figures show
Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers said on 14 September 2026 that 1,173 port infrastructure facilities and 274 civilian vessels had been damaged or partially destroyed since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Those are cumulative figures and do not describe damage from the 3 October incident. The Cabinet also reported that cargo handling in Greater Odesa ports had fallen by more than 15 times after 22 July 2026.
