If you already have diarrhea, don’t push through a run: rest, replace lost fluids, and consider medical advice—especially if you feel unwell or have signs of dehydration. That is safety-focused guidance, not a universal medical return-to-running rule; the sources here do not set one. Recurrent loose stools during or just after a run are a different pattern, often called runner’s diarrhea, and may call for tracking food, timing, and training triggers.
Runner’s diarrhea and acute diarrhea are different situations
Runner’s diarrhea usually means frequent, loose bowel movements during or immediately after running. It is most common in long-distance runners, according to Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine. Diarrhea that happens to coincide with a run can also have causes unrelated to exercise.
The distinction matters: recurring urgency linked to exertion is not the same as new diarrhea that begins before a run and continues while you are ill. The pattern alone does not diagnose the cause.
Recommended Free Tools
| What you notice | More useful first response |
|---|---|
| Urgency or loose stool that repeatedly occurs during or just after running, without warning signs | Look for individual patterns in food, timing, products, and training; seek professional help if it persists. |
| Diarrhea already present before the run, or new, persistent, or worsening symptoms | Rest, replace fluids, and consider medical advice rather than pushing through. |
| Blood or black stool, severe pain, dehydration signs, high fever, frequent vomiting, or other warning signs | Seek prompt medical attention. |
This comparison is not a diagnostic tool. Diarrhea can lead to fluid and electrolyte loss, and some symptoms need medical attention regardless of whether they began during exercise.

Why might running cause diarrhea or bowel urgency?
The exact cause of runner’s diarrhea is not settled. Mayo Clinic lists possible contributors: the jostling of running, reduced blood flow to the intestines, changes in intestinal hormone secretion, changes in food intake, and pre-run anxiety or stress. None is established as the explanation for every runner.
A 2025 joint position statement from Sports Dietitians Australia and the Ultra Sports Science Foundation describes exercise-associated gastrointestinal disturbance more broadly, emphasizing that symptoms and responses vary among individuals. Its reported symptom rates span studies with different populations and methods, so those figures should not be treated as a general prevalence estimate for runner’s diarrhea. (Costa et al., Sports Medicine, April 7, 2025.)

What to try when symptoms recur during runs
If the problem is a recurring run-linked pattern rather than an acute illness, look for personal triggers instead of assuming one food or strategy is responsible. Mayo Clinic suggests considering food choices and meal timing, fluids, and training load, including high-fiber or gas-producing foods, sugar alcohols, caffeine, and fatty foods.
- Note what you ate and drank, when you did so, what products you used, and when symptoms occurred.
- Change one relevant factor at a time where practical, so you can tell whether the pattern changes.
- Energy gels and bars contribute to symptoms for some people; avoid introducing a new one on race day.
- Do not turn trigger-checking into a restrictive diet. A sports dietitian or clinician can help if symptoms persist or make fueling difficult.
Mayo Clinic also suggests reducing distance or intensity when symptoms improve. That advice concerns runner-associated symptoms; it is not a blanket instruction to exercise through acute diarrhea.

Can you run with diarrhea already underway?
There is no universal yes-or-no return-to-running interval for adults with acute diarrhea established by the sources cited here. NHS self-care advice recommends rest and fluids for diarrhea and vomiting (NHS, “Diarrhoea and vomiting”). As a safety-focused approach, rest if you have ongoing diarrhea, feel unwell, or may be dehydrated; do not use a workout to test whether you are better.
Diarrhea causes fluid and electrolyte losses. NIDDK recommends replacing them and lists water, broth, sports drinks, and oral rehydration solutions as options (NIDDK, “Treatment of Diarrhea”). People with diabetes, kidney disease, weakened immunity, or other health conditions should ask a clinician about oral rehydration solutions before using them.

If the diarrhea could be infectious
Diarrhea during exercise does not by itself establish an infection. If diarrhea or vomiting may be infectious, NHS guidance says to stay home from work or school until at least 48 hours after symptoms stop and recommends hygiene measures to reduce spread. That interval is infection-control advice, not a sport-specific clearance rule.
Frequently asked questions
What is runner’s diarrhea?
It is frequent, loose bowel movements during or immediately after a run, a pattern Mayo Clinic says is most common in long-distance runners. It does not describe every case of diarrhea that happens around exercise.
Why do I get diarrhea when I run?
Possible contributors include jostling, reduced intestinal blood flow, hormone changes, food intake changes, and pre-run stress, but no single cause explains every runner. Individual responses vary.
How can I prevent runner’s diarrhea?
Track the relationship between symptoms and food, meal timing, fluids, products, and training. Consider individual adjustments rather than a universal elimination diet, and ask a sports dietitian or clinician for help if the problem persists.
How should I rehydrate?
Replace fluid and electrolytes lost through diarrhea. NIDDK lists water, broths, sports drinks, and oral rehydration solutions; people with relevant health conditions should consult a clinician before using oral rehydration solutions.
