There isn’t a single running smartwatch that suits every runner. The available shortlist supports four candidates: COROS PACE 3 for value and low weight, Garmin Forerunner 70 as TechRadar’s overall pick, Garmin Forerunner 965 for deeper training data, and Apple Watch Ultra 3 for iPhone owners who want broad smartwatch features. That evidence does not establish a fifth pick, so this guide explains the four use cases rather than filling out a “top five” with an unverified model.
Which running smartwatch fits your priorities?
| Runner or priority | Candidate | Why it may fit | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Value, low weight, or a first running watch | COROS PACE 3 | TechRadar lists it as a budget option and beginner candidate. It reports a weight of 32 g, up to 24 days in watch mode, and up to 38 hours of GPS use. | Those are source-listed specifications, not independent measurements here. Confirm current price, availability, and features for your region. |
| General running use | Garmin Forerunner 70 | TechRadar names it as its overall pick and a candidate for beginners who need core running metrics. | The available evidence does not provide comparable weight or battery figures for this model. Check current specifications and phone compatibility. |
| More training data | Garmin Forerunner 965 | TechRadar recommends it for runners seeking deeper training data. It lists the watch at 52 g. | TechRadar lists up to 23 days in watch mode, 31 hours GPS-only, or 10 hours GPS with music. These estimates vary with configuration. |
| iPhone use and broader smartwatch features | Apple Watch Ultra 3 | TechRadar identifies it as a candidate for iPhone users who want calls, apps, and general smartwatch functions alongside running. | More frequent charging than dedicated running watches is a stated trade-off. Check current compatibility and model details with Apple. |
TechRadar’s running-watch guide is the source for the recommendations and the figures above. It describes testing watches for at least two weeks, comparing heart-rate data with monitors and a control watch, and recording battery use under typical use; those are TechRadar’s methods, not tests performed for this guide.
What should beginners prioritize?
If you mainly want pace, distance, heart rate, and route tracking, you may not need the most advanced training platform. TechRadar names the COROS PACE 3 and Garmin Forerunner 70 as beginner candidates. Choose between them by checking the features you will actually use, comfort on your wrist, current regional pricing, and whether the watch works with your phone.
Garmin’s US running-watch category lists the Forerunner 265 series among its products. That confirms a current product-family presence on the official US page, but the available evidence does not support adding it as a fifth recommendation or comparing it directly with the four picks here.

How do battery estimates translate to a run?
Compare GPS runtime with the length of your activity. Watch-mode estimates and GPS-use estimates describe different operating conditions, so they are not interchangeable. Music, maps, screen settings, and satellite configuration can all reduce runtime from a published maximum.
| Model | Watch-mode estimate | GPS estimate |
|---|---|---|
| COROS PACE 3 | Up to 24 days | Up to 38 hours |
| Garmin Forerunner 965 | Up to 23 days | 31 hours GPS-only; 10 hours GPS plus music |
Figures in this table are estimates listed by TechRadar, accessed in 2026, not independent measurements. They should not be treated as guarantees; actual runtime depends on settings and use. The available source does not provide comparable battery figures for the Forerunner 70 or Apple Watch Ultra 3.

What matters for trail running and ultramarathons?
For long trail events, prioritize GPS-mode runtime and route guidance over everyday watch-mode battery claims. Check that the specific model supports the route features you need and that its expected runtime covers your event with a margin for delays, navigation, and any music use. The available evidence does not establish a single best ultramarathon watch among these four.

An AMOLED screen can look bright and vivid; a lower-power display type may favor longer runtime. Physical buttons can be easier to operate in rain, with gloves, or when your hands are sweaty. Decide which matters more for your typical runs, and verify the display and controls on the exact model before buying. The evidence here does not provide a complete display comparison for all four watches.

How much heart-rate accuracy do you need?
Wrist-based optical heart-rate sensing is convenient for everyday runs. If you train by precise heart-rate zones or do intervals where rapid changes matter, consider a chest strap—but confirm that the particular strap and watch are compatible before purchasing. No compatibility pairing is established here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you check phone fit, price, and availability?
Phone ecosystem matters most if you want the watch to handle calls, apps, and other daily smartwatch tasks as well as running. TechRadar’s guide positions Apple Watch Ultra 3 for iPhone users; check the current Apple Watch comparison page for model details, and verify compatibility for any specific watch before buying. COROS describes the PACE 3 as a lightweight GPS sport watch for runners and multisport athletes. Prices, stock, and purchase listings change, and no live price comparison is established here.
