Deploy the Spring Boot application as a Payara-supported web module, configure the database connection pool and JDBC resource in Payara, then set Spring Boot’s spring.datasource.jndi-name to the exact JNDI name visible to the application. The pool and resource are separate Payara objects: the pool holds driver and connection settings, while the JDBC resource is the application-facing DataSource.
How the integration works
Payara manages the JDBC pool and creates a DataSource bound in JNDI. Spring Boot retrieves that server-managed DataSource instead of building one from a JDBC URL and credentials. Payara describes a JDBC resource (data source) as providing applications with a way to connect to a database.
The approach is appropriate when database credentials, pooling, validation, and operational changes should remain under application-server administration. Spring Boot’s alternative is to configure its own DataSource from spring.datasource.url, spring.datasource.username, and spring.datasource.password.
1. Create the Payara connection pool
In the Payara Administration Console, create a JDBC connection pool for the database vendor and configure the JDBC driver, URL, user, password, and any vendor-specific properties. Test the pool before creating the application resource.

The pool is not itself the name that Spring Boot normally looks up. It is the managed connection configuration to which the JDBC resource points. Keep a record of the pool name, target server or cluster, and the database driver version.
2. Create and verify the JDBC resource
Create a JDBC resource associated with the pool and assign it a unique JNDI name, such as jdbc/orders. Enable the resource and target it to the same server or cluster where the application will run.
Payara documents database connectivity and naming details in Administering Database Connectivity. Copy the resource name exactly, including capitalization and any prefix; that exact binding is what the application must resolve.

About Payara’s default names
Payara documents jdbc/__default as a configured resource and maps the Jakarta EE logical name java:comp/DefaultDataSource to it. These are documented defaults, not universal aliases for a custom resource. Use a custom JNDI name when the application is intended to use a particular database, and verify the mapping in the target domain.

3. Configure Spring Boot to use JNDI
In application.properties, set:
spring.datasource.jndi-name=jdbc/ordersReplace jdbc/orders with the resource name that Payara actually binds and exposes to the deployed application. Spring Boot documents spring.datasource.jndi-name as an alternative to its URL, username, and password properties; it tells Boot to obtain the DataSource from a specific JNDI location.
For this server-managed model, do not treat URL-and-credentials properties as a second active DataSource definition. Also check whether the application declares its own DataSource bean, because custom bean definitions can change Spring Boot auto-configuration behavior in a version-dependent way.

4. Resolve the application’s naming context
The name in Spring Boot must be visible from the web application’s naming context. A server-wide name such as jdbc/orders is not automatically identical to a component reference such as java:comp/env/jdbc/orders.
Payara explains these naming contexts and resource references in Administering the JNDI Service. If the application uses a component-relative reference, declare or map that reference to the configured Payara resource in the deployment descriptors or the deployment configuration. If Spring Boot is configured with a global name, confirm that the global binding is accessible from the deployed module.

5. Package and deploy the application
Deploy the application using the web-module format and runtime requirements supported by the selected Spring Boot and Payara releases. Payara deployment documentation covers WAR and web-module deployment; Spring Boot documents JNDI use when an application runs inside an application server.

Do not assume that every executable Spring Boot JAR can be dropped into every Payara release. Confirm the exact external-container instructions, Java version, servlet API, and packaging requirements for your versions. In particular, a Spring Boot generation using the jakarta.servlet namespace can be incompatible with a container stack expecting javax.servlet.
Relevant deployment guidance is available in Payara’s application-deployment documentation and the Spring Boot 3.2.4 reference. Those references establish the integration pattern, not a universal compatibility matrix for unspecified versions.

- The Payara pool uses the correct JDBC driver, URL, credentials, and database properties.
- The pool connection test succeeds.
- The JDBC resource is enabled and targets the application’s server or cluster.
- The JNDI spelling in
spring.datasource.jndi-nameexactly matches an available binding. - Any
java:comp/envreference is declared and mapped to the intended resource. - The Spring Boot package, Java runtime, servlet namespace, and Payara release are a supported combination.
Troubleshooting lookup and connection failures
JNDI name not found
Compare the configured property with the resource’s exact JNDI name. Check whether the application is requesting a component reference while Payara exposes only a global resource, then add the required mapping or use the name supported in that deployment context.

Pool or driver failure
Re-test the Payara pool and inspect its driver class, database URL, credentials, and vendor properties. A JDBC resource cannot provide a working DataSource when its associated pool cannot establish connections.
Unexpected default database
Do not assume java:comp/DefaultDataSource, jdbc/__default, and a custom resource are interchangeable. Verify which resource the deployed module resolves and configure the intended one explicitly.
Deployment or startup incompatibility
Review Payara deployment logs and Spring Boot startup logs for namespace, servlet API, Java-runtime, or packaging errors. Re-check the release-specific external-container instructions before changing application code.
When to let Spring Boot own the DataSource instead
Use Spring Boot’s URL, username, and password properties when the application should create and configure its own pool independently of Payara. Use the JNDI approach when Payara should own pooling and credentials and the application is deployed with a verified naming context. The choice is operational: it determines who changes connection settings, where secrets reside, and which runtime must be available for the application to start.
