Jagex’s 29 January 2026 roadmap promised three new regions for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the Fishing skill and regular smaller updates. Since then, Dowdun Reach and Umbral Sands have launched, and the game’s 1.0 release on 15 September brought Scorned Wilderness. The original roadmap is now a useful record of what Jagex planned—and how the year’s releases unfolded.
What did Jagex announce in the January 2026 roadmap?
On 29 January, Jagex outlined a year of content for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, naming three areas of Ashenfall: Dowdun Reach, Umbral Sands and Scorned Wilderness. The company also said Fishing would be added as a skill, that every skill would eventually have a level cap of 99 as content was backfilled over later updates, and that monthly minor updates would bring quests, activities and quality-of-life fixes. Jagex’s roadmap announcement reported that the game had passed one million sales at that point.
Those were forward-looking commitments, not a guarantee that every feature would arrive on the same schedule. Later Jagex announcements provide the release dates and details of what shipped.
Which new regions have launched?
Dowdun Reach
Dowdun Reach launched on 31 March as a free major update. Jagex described the area as a fortress region and added Mithril gear, up to eight Mithril-based weapons, dragonhide armor and mystic robes. The update also raised all skill caps to 99. In its March announcement, Jagex said Fishing would follow in an April update alongside quests, skill spells, decorations and fish; the cited announcement does not establish a more precise Fishing release date. Umbral Sands
Umbral Sands arrived on 23 June as the final major Steam Early Access update before 1.0. Its desert environment has a dynamic heat system that drains player health, so finding shade and considering the time of day matter. Jagex also highlighted magic carpet mounts, Fuzan, and new enemies and allies. Jagex’s Umbral Sands announcement said Scorned Wilderness and the Kuldra boss fight would come with the full launch.
Scorned Wilderness
Scorned Wilderness arrived with the 1.0 launch on 15 September. Jagex described the launch content as including the Scorned Wilderness Raid and said it concluded the game’s first saga. The January roadmap’s three named regions therefore corresponded to content released across the year, rather than three areas still waiting to arrive. See Jagex’s 1.0 announcement.

- Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.
What new skills were added?
Fishing was the new skill identified in the January roadmap. The March Dowdun Reach announcement described Fishing as a subsequent April update, with related quests, skill spells, decorations and fish. The evidence available here does not confirm the exact date Fishing went live, so it is safest to distinguish the announced plan from the dated launch announcements for the regions.
Separately, Jagex said all skills would ultimately have a level cap of 99. Dowdun Reach’s March release confirmed that the skill caps had been raised to 99; this was a cap change, not a statement that every skill received new content at the same time.
When did RuneScape: Dragonwilds 1.0 come out, and where can you play?
RuneScape: Dragonwilds 1.0 released on 15 September 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, according to Jagex. The game is an open-world survival and crafting title distinct from the RuneScape MMORPG; the announcements do not establish shared accounts or progression between the games.
Jagex described solo play and teams of up to four in its 1.0 announcement. The March Dowdun Reach update separately introduced dedicated servers through preferred supplier Shockbyte, supporting up to six players. That higher player count applies to the dedicated-server option, not the ordinary group size described at launch. Jagex’s March announcement has the server details.

Jagex reported more than 1.5 million copies sold during the 18-month Steam Early Access period in its 15 September announcement. At launch, Jagex described Digital Standard and Deluxe editions on PC stores, digital availability on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, and a Digital Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement confirms the plan, not that a particular retailer has listings or stock. Check the retailer, platform, edition and regional availability before buying. Jagex’s launch announcement provides the edition details.

What comes next after the 2026 roadmap?
In its 15 September launch announcement, Jagex said the first post-launch major update, titled Luminance, was planned for December 2026. It also said the 2027 roadmap would be revealed during October’s RuneFest. These are plans announced by Jagex on 15 September, not confirmation that either event has since taken place.
