For many Windows desktop apps, Bottles is a practical graphical place to start: it manages app environments and Wine runners without requiring you to build a setup by hand. First, check whether your exact app and version is listed as working. Bottles, Wine, CrossOver and Proton are different routes, not guarantees that every Windows program will run.

Check whether your exact app works before setting anything up

Search for the application name and version in the WineHQ application database and, if considering CrossOver, its compatibility listing. A result for another version is useful context, but it does not establish that your version will behave the same way.

For example, someone looking for a “clean” way to run FS360 on Linux should treat that as a compatibility question to investigate—not as evidence that FS360 works. A community discussion raised the same practical point: check app compatibility before spending time configuring a compatibility layer. The discussion is not a compatibility certification.

Success can depend on the application version, runner, Linux distribution and system setup. If the app is essential, make this check before committing substantial setup time or paying for a product.

What the Linux options actually do

Wine is the compatibility layer

Wine is not a full Windows installation or a virtual machine. The WineHQ project describes it as “a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, macOS, & BSD.” It translates Windows API calls so applications can work with the host system. WineHQ documentation

Bottles gives Wine-style setups a graphical manager

Bottles manages separate environments, often called prefixes, and lets users work with different runners through a graphical interface. That makes it a sensible first try for a general desktop application when you want to avoid managing every compatibility setting manually. The Bottles project recommends its Flatpak package as a sandboxed installation route; use the project’s current installation instructions because packaging and interface details can change.

CrossOver is a paid guided option

CrossOver is CodeWeavers’ commercial product. Its Linux guide provides an application-installation workflow, separate bottles for keeping app environments apart, and desktop shortcuts or launch icons. It may suit someone whose app is listed as compatible and who prefers a guided product workflow. Its requirements and supported Linux releases are version-specific; the guide warns it cannot guarantee compatibility with a Linux release newer than the CrossOver version. The generic shell installer also does not automatically install dependencies. See the current CrossOver Linux guide for version-specific details.

Proton is primarily a games route

Proton is best treated here as a Windows-game runner, especially for Steam games, rather than as the default choice for office or other general desktop software. Bottles’ runner documentation describes Proton as more complex and oriented toward modern games. Check the individual game’s compatibility information and the current Bottles runner guidance rather than assuming a game-focused setup will suit a desktop app.

A low-friction starting path for a desktop app

  1. Identify the exact app and version. Check WineHQ’s application database and, if relevant, CrossOver’s compatibility listing. Look for reports that match the version you need.
  2. Install Bottles using its current official instructions. The project recommends Flatpak as its sandboxed route. Follow the instructions for your distribution rather than relying on a generic command that may not fit your system.
  3. Create an application environment. In Bottles, create a bottle intended for an application, keeping this app’s configuration separate from other environments.
  4. Use the recommended runner first. Retain the project’s suggested choice unless the app’s compatibility information points to a specific alternative. Runner availability and interface labels can vary by Bottles release.
  5. Install from a legitimate app installer. Use the application vendor’s installer and follow the current Bottles workflow to run it in the environment you created. A successful installer launch does not by itself prove that every app feature works.
  6. Test the functions you actually need. Open the app and check its essential workflows, not just whether its window appears. If it fails, compare the app version and runner with compatibility reports before changing settings at random.

Choose the route that fits your workload

Route Best fit Workflow Important qualification
Wine Users comfortable working with the underlying compatibility layer Open-source compatibility layer for Windows applications Not a complete Windows installation; app compatibility varies.
Bottles General desktop apps where a graphical manager is preferred Manages environments and runners; the project recommends Flatpak as a sandboxed installation route Does not make unsupported apps compatible, and instructions can vary by release.
CrossOver Users who prefer a paid, guided workflow and whose app is listed Commercial installer workflow, separate bottles and desktop integration Compatibility and Linux support depend on the product version; the generic shell installer does not automatically install dependencies.
Proton Primarily Windows games, especially Steam games Game-oriented runner Do not assume it is the right default for general desktop applications.

When a compatibility layer is the wrong answer

If the application is unsupported and you depend on it, consider a native Linux alternative or a Windows virtual machine instead. Those are different approaches: a native app replaces the Windows software, while a virtual machine runs a Windows environment and brings its own setup and resource needs. The available product guidance here does not establish a particular VM recommendation or hardware requirement, so check the software and system requirements for the option you choose.
