Yes. Felix Rieseberg’s Windows 95 project packages the classic operating system in an Electron app, with downloads listed for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is a convenient way to revisit the Windows 95 desktop, but the project cautions that it is written entirely in JavaScript; if your main goal is playing old games, its developer suggests using a virtualization app instead.
What the Windows 95 app is
The project describes itself as Windows 95 running in Electron and calls it “the full thing.” That is the developer’s description, not an independent technical audit. Felix Rieseberg announced the project in 2018 as an Electron app for macOS, Windows, and Linux; BleepingComputer’s launch coverage quoted him calling it “a terrible idea that works shockingly well.”
The project README says it is written entirely in JavaScript and asks users to adjust their expectations. It does not provide a controlled performance benchmark, so there is no sound basis here for promising a particular speed or level of compatibility.
Which platforms and downloads are listed
The official project repository currently lists packages for three host operating systems. Choose based on both your operating system and processor architecture, and check the repository’s current release assets before downloading because package availability can change.

| Host platform | Listed downloads | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | 32-bit and 64-bit installers, plus standalone ZIP files | Choose the appropriate system architecture and decide whether you want an installer or a ZIP. |
| macOS | Standalone ZIPs for Apple Silicon and Intel | Match the download to your Mac’s processor. |
| Linux | RPM and DEB packages for 64-bit, ARM64, and ARM | Match both your package type and processor architecture. |
Use the repository’s release page as the source for the current files rather than relying on an old download size or a third-party mirror.
How to get started
- Open the official Windows 95 project repository and go to its current release assets.
- Identify your host operating system and processor architecture, then choose the matching package. Windows users can select an installer or standalone ZIP; macOS users should distinguish Apple Silicon from Intel; Linux users should select a listed RPM or DEB package for their architecture.
- Download and open the package using the usual process for that file type on your system. Follow any prompts shown by the installer or operating system.
Package names and release assets may change, so the repository is the right place to confirm the current options.

Will it run Windows 95 games?
The project does not promise that particular games will work. Its README says users interested in Doom or another favorite game will likely be better served by an actual virtualization app. That is a practical distinction: this Electron app is aimed at revisiting the Windows 95 environment, while game compatibility is a separate requirement that should be tested with the specific game and setup you plan to use.
For DOS games, the README relays a suggestion credited to DisplacedGamers: try setting the display to 640×480 resolution and 256 colors before starting the game. Treat that as troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee of compatibility.

Disk image and licensing caveats
The project’s contributing instructions say the disk image is not part of the repository and explain how contributors can obtain it from a packaged release using the “Show Disk Image” button in “Modify C: Drive.” This contributor workflow does not establish that the repository contains the image or grant independent permission to redistribute it.
The README says the project is for educational purposes and is not affiliated with or approved by Microsoft. That disclaimer does not determine the Windows 95 image’s licensing status or whether redistribution is authorized. The available project information does not settle those rights questions.

Who should choose this app
- For nostalgia or experimentation: the prepackaged Electron app is a straightforward way to revisit the Windows 95 desktop across the listed host platforms.
- For a particular legacy game: follow the developer’s recommendation to consider a virtualization app, and verify compatibility for that game rather than assuming it will run.
- For redistribution or commercial use: do not treat the educational-purpose disclaimer or contributor instructions as proof of licensing permission.
The project repository credits the v86 project by saying “99% of the work was done over at v86 by Copy aka Fabian Hemmer and his contributors.” That figure is the project’s own credit, not an independently measured breakdown.
