Use Playwright to open and capture the page, then use cron to start the Node.js script at the times you choose. The script should close its browser when finished so each scheduled run can exit cleanly. This guide shows the capture script, a crontab entry, practical capture choices, and ways to diagnose failures.
1. Prepare Node.js, Playwright, and a browser
Run the job on a machine or hosted runner where Node.js, your project dependencies, and Playwright’s browser runtime are available. From the project directory, install Playwright:
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromiumThe second command installs the Chromium browser that Playwright will launch. If your deployment environment requires additional operating-system libraries, follow Playwright’s installation guidance for that environment.
2. Write a screenshot script that exits cleanly
Create screenshot.js in the project directory. This example captures a full-page PNG and closes Chromium even if navigation or capture fails:

});The capture flow uses Playwright’s documented Page API: launch a browser, navigate, save a screenshot, and close the browser. Playwright screenshots documents the available screenshot and navigation options. The networkidle wait can be unsuitable for pages that keep network requests open; in that case, choose a more appropriate navigation wait or wait for a page-specific selector.
The output path is relative to the process’s current working directory. For cron jobs, an absolute output path can make file placement less surprising:

3. Schedule the script with cron
Use crontab -e to edit the crontab for the account that should run the job. A five-field cron schedule uses minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. For example, this entry requests a run daily at 02:30 according to the cron host’s scheduling configuration:
30 2 * * * cd /home/youruser/site-shot-job && /usr/bin/node /home/youruser/site-shot-job/screenshot.js >> /home/youruser/site-shot-job/cron.log 2>&1Replace the paths with the actual project directory, Node.js executable, script, and log file locations. Cron often runs with a smaller environment than an interactive shell, so avoid relying on an implicit working directory or PATH. Find the executable path with command -v node in the same environment, and use the resulting absolute path. Check the host’s timezone and cron implementation before relying on a particular local run time. The cron manual describes crontab as time-based job scheduling: crontab(5).
Node.js timers are different: they run callbacks while the Node process remains alive. Cron starts the script when needed, so a one-shot screenshot job does not need a continuously running Node timer process. The Node.js timers documentation surfaced for v26.10.0: Node.js timers.

4. Choose the screenshot shape and file format
Viewport or full page
By default, a screenshot represents the visible viewport. Set fullPage: true when the record should include the entire scrollable document. Use a viewport capture when you need a specific screen state rather than a tall image of the whole page.
Image scale and output size
Playwright supports screenshot scale choices. CSS-pixel scale can keep high-density captures smaller; device-pixel scale captures at device density and can produce larger files. Select the scale based on whether the image is for visual comparison, display, or archiving.

PNG is a straightforward lossless default for archiving or pixel comparisons. JPEG and WebP can reduce file size, but lossy encoding may alter pixels and make exact visual diffs noisier. Playwright’s screenshot options cover path, type, quality, clipping, and full-page capture in its screenshot documentation.

5. Keep scheduled captures useful and repeatable
Make the environment stable for comparisons
A scheduled screenshot is not guaranteed to be pixel-identical between runs. Rendering may differ with the host operating system, browser version, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For visual baselines, create and check screenshots in the same environment; Playwright discusses these sources of variability in its visual comparisons guidance.
If the page contains animations, rotating content, timestamps, or other dynamic regions, decide whether to capture that changing state or control it for comparison. Review image diffs in context rather than treating every changed pixel as a product defect.
Log enough to investigate missed or bad captures
The example writes errors to standard error, and the cron line appends standard output and errors to a log. For an important monitoring job, also record a timestamp for each successful capture and preserve the resulting image for an appropriate period. Cron and Playwright provide the scheduling and capture mechanisms; retention and monitoring rules depend on your needs.

Consider repeated captures for visual checks
Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion can take captures until two consecutive screenshots match, then compare the last capture with the expected image. That behavior is useful for reducing false diffs from transient rendering, but it is part of Playwright Test’s visual assertion workflow rather than a replacement for a schedule. - The job works in a terminal but not under cron: cron may use another working directory or a limited PATH. Use absolute paths for Node.js, the script, and output files, and explicitly
cdto the project before running it. - Chromium will not launch: confirm the browser runtime was installed for the deployed environment and that the cron account can access it. Install any environment-specific system dependencies required by Playwright.
- No screenshot appears: check the log for navigation or filesystem errors, verify the output directory exists, and confirm the cron user has write permission.
- The page is blank or incomplete: the page may not have finished rendering when capture began, or a page-specific element may need to appear first. Use an appropriate navigation wait or wait for a selector that indicates the content is ready.
- The job seems to hang: inspect navigation waits and page behavior. A page with ongoing network traffic may never reach a network-idle condition; use a suitable wait strategy and consider setting explicit timeouts.
- Images differ between runs: compare captures made with the same operating system, browser version, hardware class, and headless configuration, and account for dynamic page content.
7. Decide where the scheduler should run
A self-managed host gives you direct control over the runtime and browser environment, but you maintain those dependencies and decide where screenshots and logs live. A hosted scheduled workflow avoids operating a continuously available host, but its schedule behavior, availability, and limits vary by platform. Check the platform’s current documentation before deploying; GitHub’s workflow syntax reference is here.
For either approach, decide who maintains browser dependencies, how files are stored and retained, which timezone governs the schedule, whether the target requires private or authenticated access, and whether the environment can remain consistent enough for image comparisons.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Node.js timers instead of cron?
Yes, if you keep a Node.js process running continuously; cron is suited to starting a short-lived job only when a capture is due.
Does a full-page screenshot include content loaded only after scrolling?
A full-page option captures the scrollable page, but pages that load content dynamically may need additional waits or page-specific handling before capture.
