A modder converted one GeForce RTX 3060 8GB card to 12GB and reported a 22% higher score in Unigine Superposition. The conversion involved soldering on memory chips, changing board components and installing a different VBIOS—it was not a software-only unlock. The result demonstrates that the modification can work on that card; it does not establish a safe, repeatable upgrade for every RTX 3060 8GB or predict a 22% gain in games.
What the RTX 3060 8GB-to-12GB mod involved
The demonstrated card had four memory chips installed and vacant pads. The modders added matching memory ICs with hot-air soldering equipment, changed PCB resistors and wrote a VBIOS from a 12GB version so the GPU could recognize the added memory. HotHardware and Tom’s Hardware describe it as a board-level experiment requiring specialist tools and skills, not a consumer upgrade procedure. HotHardware’s report and Tom’s Hardware’s coverage detail the work.
That combination matters: adding capacity alone does not reproduce the reported configuration. The available accounts do not establish that all retail 8GB boards have the same layout, compatible components or a usable path to conversion.

Allied Gaming reported scores of 4,235 before and 5,196 after the modification in Unigine Superposition’s 1080p Extreme profile. The account specifies a 100% power limit and the same fan speed for both runs. It characterizes the difference as a 22% increase. These are reported results from one modified card and one benchmark setup, not a multi-card study or a guarantee of what another card will achieve. Allied Gaming’s account summarizes the demonstration.

Tom’s Hardware separately relayed the modder’s report of a 12% performance increase in The Last of Us Part I and VRAM use rising from 7.6GB to 10.29GB. That is a different result from the Superposition score, and the article does not document independent replication of the game test. Tom’s Hardware’s report is the source for those figures.
Why a stock RTX 3060 12GB is not just an 8GB card with more memory
The factory desktop 8GB and 12GB versions differ in their memory subsystem, not only capacity. Tom’s Hardware describes the 8GB model as having a 128-bit memory bus and the 12GB model a 192-bit bus. TechSpot reported bandwidth of 224 GB/s for the 8GB card and 360 GB/s for the 12GB card in its 2022 comparison. The modified-card demonstration does not establish that an 8GB board acquires the factory 12GB model’s full memory configuration or bandwidth. Tom’s Hardware; TechSpot’s 2022 review.

TechSpot’s own game-suite tests found the retail 12GB model averaged 17% faster at 1080p than the 8GB model. The measured difference varied by game:
| TechSpot test, 2022 | Retail 12GB model’s lead over 8GB model |
|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077, 1080p | 13% |
| Dying Light 2, 1080p | 35% |
| Halo Infinite, 1080p | 21% |
| Average across TechSpot’s tested game suite, 1080p | 17% |
These are TechSpot’s retail-card comparisons, not results from the memory-mod experiment. Workload and test method matter; neither this game-suite average nor the modder’s single Superposition uplift should be treated as a universal performance figure. TechSpot’s review.

Should you try the conversion?
For most owners, compare the exact card and workload with a factory 12GB RTX 3060 before considering board-level modification. Tom’s Hardware said the two versions cost about the same in the United States in 2023; that historical comparison does not establish today’s prices, stock or value in another region. Tom’s Hardware’s 2023 report.
The demonstration used hot-air soldering to install memory ICs, but a hot-air rework station by itself is not an upgrade kit. The work also requires compatible memory parts, board-level changes, firmware work and specialist ability. The cited reporting does not establish board-by-board compatibility, current service availability, modification cost or warranty consequences. For a non-specialist, this is best understood as a proof of concept rather than a practical do-it-yourself upgrade. HotHardware.
