There is no universal winner between RTMP and SRT. Choose a protocol the receiving platform accepts, then match it to your job: RTMPS is a common encrypted ingest choice; SRT is designed for contribution paths where loss and delay matter; HLS and DASH can support particular codecs and resolutions but usually add latency; and WebRTC is worth evaluating for interactive, subsecond communication.

What the protocols do—and where they fit

A streaming protocol is part of the route from an encoder or production site to a receiving platform or viewer. These protocols do not all solve the same problem. RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT are commonly considered for contribution or platform ingest. HLS and DASH can also be used for ingest by some platforms, but their segment-based workflows have different latency characteristics. WebRTC is more suited to interactive communication than conventional one-to-many broadcast delivery.

Keep the stages distinct when comparing latency: encoder-to-ingest delay, ingest-to-viewer delay, stream startup time, and interactive round-trip delay are different measurements. A protocol name alone does not establish a guaranteed end-to-end delay.

Protocol Typical role Useful when Important trade-off or qualification
RTMP Contribution and platform ingest The destination accepts RTMP and the workflow calls for a broadly supported ingest option. Cleartext RTMP does not provide the ingest-path protection RTMPS provides. Destination requirements vary.
RTMPS Encrypted RTMP ingest The destination and encoder support it and there is no verified reason to use cleartext RTMP. Requires correct TLS and endpoint configuration. Ports and authentication details are service-specific.
SRT Contribution between production systems or to a supported ingest endpoint The path is long-distance or variable and bounded loss recovery is useful. Retransmission and FEC cannot guarantee perfect recovery; recovery may be abandoned to limit added delay.
HLS Segment-based ingest on platforms that support it A platform’s supported codec or high-resolution ingest options make it appropriate. YouTube says HLS ingest typically has greater latency than RTMP and is not suitable for its ultra-low-latency mode comparison.
DASH Segment-based ingest on platforms that support it A platform supports DASH and its codec options fit the stream. YouTube says DASH ingest typically has greater latency than RTMP and is not suitable for its ultra-low-latency mode comparison.
WebRTC Interactive real-time communication Conference-like use requires subsecond communication. Stateful connections make one-to-many scaling less straightforward, according to AWS guidance.

This is a role-based comparison, not a universal ranking. YouTube and Amazon IVS publish different ingest options and endpoint requirements. Verify current support in the documentation for the actual destination before configuring an encoder.

RTMP vs. RTMPS: choose encryption when supported

RTMP remains a broadly accepted live-ingest option. RTMPS carries RTMP through TLS, protecting the ingest path against interception and tampering. YouTube lists both RTMP and RTMPS for third-party ingest and says they can be used with its normal, low, or ultra-low latency modes. Those are YouTube-specific statements about ingest options, not a guarantee of a particular viewer delay.

If the destination and encoder both support RTMPS, it is generally the safer choice unless a specific, verified workflow requires RTMP. The connection details matter: YouTube’s RTMPS URL includes a protocol, server, and application path, and its API can return an ingestion address. YouTube uses port 443 for RTMPS and requires the server hostname for SNI authentication. An incorrect protocol, hostname, port, or SNI setup can cause SSL or timeout errors.

Amazon IVS documents RTMPS over TCP port 443 and requires TLS 1.2 or later for RTMPS streaming. Do not carry those IVS requirements over to another service automatically; use the receiving platform’s current endpoint instructions.

When SRT is a better fit

SRT is a contribution transport to evaluate when the network path is unreliable, variable, or long-distance. The IETF’s RFC 9317 operational overview describes SRT as able to use forward error correction (FEC) and time-bounded retransmission to recover from some packet loss. Because recovery is bounded, it can be abandoned when continuing would create too much head-of-line blocking and delay. SRT is therefore not a promise of perfect recovery, a fixed latency, or a universally cleaner picture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off under congestion is that UDP-based approaches such as SRT can show transient media artifacts more often while causing fewer playback-delay effects than reliable segment transport, as RFC 9317 describes. That is a qualitative comparison, not a matched-condition benchmark proving SRT is always faster or more reliable than RTMP.

Configuration and network roles can also affect whether SRT is practical. AWS Elemental MediaConnect describes SRT as a low-latency choice suitable for long-distance applications. Its documented caller/listener arrangement requires a listener to communicate with a caller, and a listener flow accepts one caller at a time. Amazon IVS documents SRT ingest using an SRT endpoint and stream ID; it requires a passphrase when the channel is not configured for insecure ingest. These are service-specific implementation details, so follow the chosen service’s instructions.

When HLS or DASH makes sense

HLS and DASH are not interchangeable with RTMP or SRT simply because all can appear in a live-streaming workflow. On YouTube, they are encrypted ingest options with codec choices that may suit high-resolution work: YouTube lists H.265/HEVC for HLS and VP9 for DASH. YouTube also notes that their segment-based ingest typically incurs more latency than RTMP, making neither suitable for ultra-low latency in its comparison.

Consider HLS or DASH when the receiving service supports the specific protocol and codec you need, and when the latency trade-off is acceptable. Do not assume a platform’s YouTube support matrix applies to another service, or that choosing a 4K-capable codec alone guarantees a successful stream. Confirm the destination’s codec, resolution, bitrate, and ingest requirements.

When to consider WebRTC or other contribution protocols

For conference-like communication where participants need subsecond interaction, AWS guidance recommends considering WebRTC rather than treating broadcast ingest as the same problem. WebRTC’s stateful connections can make one-to-many distribution less straightforward, so the architecture should match the audience and interaction pattern.

For contribution over unmanaged networks, AWS also lists SRT, RIST, RTP-FEC, Zixi, and RTMP as reliable ingest choices. AWS Elemental MediaConnect describes RTP-FEC as using extra bandwidth for forward error correction, and identifies RIST, SRT, and Zixi as options suited to long-distance applications in that service. This does not mean every destination accepts them: confirm both ends of the workflow support the chosen protocol.

Choose a protocol in six steps

  1. Start with the receiver. Check the exact platform, service, or contribution endpoint and eliminate protocols it does not accept.
  2. Prefer encrypted ingest where available. If both the destination and encoder support RTMPS, use it unless a specific, verified workflow requires RTMP.
  3. Assess the network path. For a variable or long-distance contribution path, evaluate SRT or another supported reliable contribution protocol. Test under the actual path conditions and tune recovery against the acceptable delay; SRT recovery is bounded.
  4. Match the use case to the latency need. For conference-like, subsecond interaction, evaluate WebRTC. For broadcast ingest, do not assume that an ingest mode’s label predicts viewer or round-trip latency.
  5. Check media-format priorities. If higher-resolution codec support is central, compare the destination’s HLS or DASH support and its latency implications with other accepted options.
  6. Verify the implementation details. Confirm endpoint, caller/listener roles where relevant, credentials or passphrase, encryption and TLS settings, firewall ports, codec, bitrate, resolution, keyframe requirements, and encoder support using the receiving service’s current documentation.

There is no neutral, current, directly comparable RTMP-versus-SRT benchmark in the cited standards and service guidance that establishes a universal speed or reliability winner. Judge the result on your actual destination and network path rather than relying on a protocol-wide latency number.

Endpoint, port, and security

Copy the endpoint exactly from the destination. With YouTube RTMPS, verify the protocol, server hostname, application path, port 443, and SNI hostname; a mismatch can produce SSL or timeout errors. For Amazon IVS, its RTMPS instructions specify TCP 443 and TLS 1.2 or later. Treat these as separate service configurations, not general rules for every RTMPS server.

Codec, resolution, and bitrate

Confirm that the destination accepts the selected codec and resolution, then use its current bitrate guidance for that format and your available network capacity. The platform-specific codec options noted above do not establish universal bitrate or resolution limits. Do not pick HLS, DASH, or a higher-resolution profile based on codec support alone if the destination or encoder does not support the full configuration.

Keyframes and startup delay

Use the receiving service’s current keyframe interval requirement. Amazon IVS documents that a 2-second keyframe interval corresponds to approximately 6–7 seconds of stream-start latency, while a 1-second interval corresponds to approximately 3–4 seconds for its stream-start behavior. Those figures are IVS-specific startup observations, not general protocol latency figures or an RTMP-versus-SRT comparison.

Credentials and SRT roles

Use the destination’s designated stream key or credentials and keep them private. For SRT, check whether the endpoint expects a caller or listener, and follow the service’s stream ID and passphrase requirements. A configuration that has the right protocol name but the wrong role, endpoint, or credentials will not connect.

Troubleshooting common connection problems

Symptom Likely cause to check What to do
RTMPS connection fails with an SSL error Wrong protocol, hostname, port, or SNI hostname. Re-copy the destination’s current RTMPS URL and verify the hostname and port. For YouTube, confirm port 443 and SNI authentication uses the server hostname.
Connection times out Incorrect endpoint details or a blocked/unavailable network path. Verify the host, port, protocol, firewall rules, and destination status against the service documentation.
SRT does not connect Caller/listener roles do not match, or endpoint, stream ID, or passphrase is wrong. Check both sides’ roles and use the exact service-provided SRT endpoint and credentials. Confirm whether the destination requires a passphrase.
Picture artifacts or delayed playback under loss Packet loss, congestion, or a recovery-versus-delay trade-off. Inspect the path and tune supported SRT recovery settings against actual network conditions. Recovery is limited; if the path remains unsuitable, evaluate another supported contribution route.
Stream will not start with a selected codec or profile The destination or encoder may not support that protocol/codec combination or profile. Verify the service’s current ingest matrix and encoder output settings. YouTube’s HEVC/HLS and VP9/DASH combinations are YouTube-specific.
Startup delay is longer than expected Segment-based ingest or service-specific keyframe/startup behavior. Check whether the selected HLS/DASH workflow is adding expected segment-based latency. Verify the destination’s keyframe guidance; do not interpret an IVS startup figure as a universal delay.

Keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running

Protocol choice answers how a stream reaches a receiver; it does not by itself keep a channel live around the clock. If your goal is to loop uploaded recordings on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that separate workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only. This is an implementation alternative, not a different contribution protocol recommendation.
