RTMPS is RTMP carried over a TLS-encrypted connection; plain RTMP does not add that transport-security layer. That protects the connection between an encoder and the receiving ingest endpoint, but does not by itself mean the stream stays encrypted throughout the platform’s internal processing.
What is the difference between RTMP and RTMPS?
RTMP and RTMPS are two connection choices for sending a live stream from an encoder to an ingest service. RTMPS wraps the connection in TLS, which encrypts data in transit to the ingest endpoint. Plain RTMP lacks that TLS layer. The receiving service determines which option it accepts, along with the endpoint, port, and any TLS requirements. Amazon IVS Streaming Configuration is one documented example of these service-specific requirements.
| Connection | Transport protection | What determines whether it works |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | No TLS layer is added by the protocol choice. | The receiver must allow insecure RTMP ingest, and the encoder must use the receiver’s specified URL and port. |
| RTMPS | TLS encrypts the connection to the ingest endpoint. | The receiver must offer RTMPS, and the encoder must support its endpoint, port, and required TLS version. |
Is RTMPS more secure than RTMP?
For the connection from the encoder to the ingest endpoint, yes: RTMPS adds TLS encryption, while plain RTMP does not. This reduces exposure of stream data while it travels over that connection. It does not establish that the entire route through a streaming service is end-to-end encrypted. For Amazon IVS, AWS says RTMPS ingest data is encrypted in transit, but also documents that data may travel unencrypted within IVS for processing. See IVS Data Protection and IVS Infrastructure Security.
RTMPS is not evidence of better picture quality or lower latency. It describes transport security, not the video codec, bitrate, or delivery performance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What port does RTMPS use?
There is no single port that applies to every RTMPS service. Use the port and URL supplied by the destination. For its low-latency streaming configuration, Amazon IVS documents RTMPS over TCP port 443 and insecure RTMP over TCP port 1935. Those are IVS-specific values, not universal protocol requirements. AWS lists them in its Low-Latency Network Requirements.
How to configure RTMPS in OBS for Amazon IVS
The following is an Amazon IVS example, not a universal OBS setup. IVS requires TLS 1.2 or later for RTMPS. Get the current ingest server and stream key from the IVS console, and follow the destination’s current instructions if you are using another service.

- Confirm encoder compatibility. Use OBS or another software or hardware encoder that supports the required ingest protocol and TLS version. AWS discusses OBS and compatible encoders in Step 4: Set Up Streaming Software; this does not guarantee that every third-party encoder works.
- Set the server URL to RTMPS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose the appropriate service or custom-server option, then enter the RTMPS server URL supplied for your IVS channel. AWS shows a URL shaped like
rtmps://<IVS-ingest-server>/<IVS-stream-key>; use the actual values from your configuration rather than the angle-bracket placeholders. - Enter the stream key in the designated field. If OBS separates the server URL from the stream key, enter each value in its corresponding field as the current IVS and OBS instructions require. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it.
- Check network access and start a test stream. Ensure the configured outbound destination and port are reachable, then start streaming and confirm that IVS receives the stream. For IVS, the documented RTMPS network example uses TCP 443.
What to check if an RTMPS connection fails
- Wrong URL scheme: Confirm that the server address begins with
rtmps://when the receiver requires RTMPS. Anrtmp://URL selects plain RTMP instead. - Wrong endpoint or stream key: Copy the current ingest server and key from the destination’s configuration. A valid key cannot compensate for a server URL from another channel or service.
- Port blocked or incorrect: Check the receiver’s specified port and whether outbound traffic to it is permitted by the computer’s firewall, network firewall, or hosting provider. For IVS, AWS documents TCP 443 for RTMPS and TCP 1935 for insecure RTMP.
- TLS negotiation fails: Verify that the encoder supports the TLS version required by the receiver. IVS RTMPS requires TLS 1.2 or later.
- Receiver rejects plain RTMP: Check whether insecure ingest is disabled. AWS notes that IVS can reject RTMP when insecure ingest is disabled; its real-time ingest configuration defaults
insecureIngestto false. - Encoder compatibility is uncertain: Check the encoder’s documentation and the destination’s supported-software guidance. Support for RTMP does not, by itself, prove support for the destination’s RTMPS implementation or TLS requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
RTMP versus RTMPS is a transport choice for an encoder connection. If your separate goal is to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 using uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
