Short answer: RTMP is commonly used to send a live feed from an encoder to a streaming service; HLS is built to deliver live or on-demand video to viewers over HTTP, often through web servers and CDNs. They are not necessarily alternatives: a service can ingest a feed using one protocol, then package and deliver it using another. Choose based on the stage of your workflow, the destination’s requirements, your player and audience devices, and your latency needs.

RTMP and HLS serve different parts of a streaming workflow

First identify whether you are choosing a protocol to contribute video to a platform or to play video for an audience. The platform receiving your feed sets the ingest requirements. The delivery service and player determine how viewers receive playback.

  • Ingest: Your encoder or an upstream service sends video to the streaming platform. RTMP is a commonly documented option for this role.
  • Playback delivery: The platform packages video for viewers. HLS delivers media over HTTP and is designed to work with ordinary web servers and CDNs.
  • Packaging and distribution: A service may receive a feed, process or package it, and deliver it in a different format. In that arrangement, RTMP and HLS coexist in the same pipeline.

AWS Elemental MediaLive illustrates why checking the specific service matters: its documentation lists RTMP push and pull inputs and HLS pull inputs. Those are MediaLive options, not a compatibility rule for every platform. AWS MediaLive supported input protocols

What each protocol is suited to

RTMP: a common contribution and ingest option

If you are configuring streaming software or an encoder to send a feed to a platform, check whether that destination accepts RTMP and which connection details or security options it requires. In MediaLive, for example, AWS documents RTMP push and pull inputs. Its documented transport limits are specific to that service and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not assume that RTMP is the viewer playback format just because an encoder sends a feed using it. The receiving service may process the contribution and deliver a different playback format.

HLS: HTTP-based delivery for viewers

Apple describes HLS as a technology for live and on-demand audio and video delivered using HTTP. It can provide alternate streams at different bit rates and switch between them as network conditions change. That adaptive behavior can help playback respond to available bandwidth. HLS is designed to use ordinary web servers and CDNs, making it well suited to broad audience delivery when the service and player support the workflow. HLS media can use fragmented MPEG-4 or MPEG-2 transport streams. Apple’s basic deployment guidance recommends fragmented MPEG-4 for the setup it describes; that recommendation is not a universal requirement for every HLS implementation. Apple HLS documentation

RTMP vs. HLS at a glance

Decision point RTMP HLS What to check
Typical role Commonly used for contribution or ingest; AWS MediaLive documents push and pull inputs. HTTP-based live and on-demand playback; AWS MediaLive also documents HLS pull input. Are you sending a feed to a platform, or delivering playback to viewers?
Delivery path Depends on the receiving service and its ingest support. Uses HTTP and can be served through web servers and CDNs. Confirm the platform’s packaging, CDN, and player support.
Network adaptation Not established here as a general viewer playback feature. Can offer alternate bit-rate streams and adapt playback to available bandwidth. Check what the implementation and player actually provide.
Latency No universal RTMP latency figure is established by the cited documentation. Standard HLS and Low-Latency HLS implementations can behave differently; no universal end-to-end figure is established. Compare measured end-to-end delay for the actual service, settings, CDN, and player.
Device compatibility Confirm that the destination accepts it for ingest. Apple documents HLS support for Apple platforms; a complete current compatibility matrix for every browser, TV, and platform is not established here. Check the exact target devices and playback platform.

How to choose for your use case

If you are connecting an encoder to a platform

  1. Open the destination’s current live-stream or ingest documentation.
  2. Confirm its accepted input protocols, whether it expects push or pull, and any secure-transport requirements.
  3. Use the connection settings and protocol the destination specifies. Do not select HLS merely because viewers will later watch an HLS stream.

If you are selecting viewer playback delivery

  1. List the devices and players your audience uses.
  2. Confirm that the streaming platform packages and serves HLS for those targets.
  3. Consider the platform’s HTTP/CDN delivery and adaptive bitrate behavior, along with its player and network requirements.

If lower delay is important

Do not decide from the protocol name alone. Apple’s Low-Latency HLS documentation describes partial media segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reloads, preload hints, and rendition reports. Achieving its intended behavior requires compatible production, delivery, CDN or cache, and player implementations. Measure the end-to-end result in the actual workflow. Apple’s authoring specification recommends a one-second target for an LL-HLS part and relates that setting to expected client P95 round-trip time. This is configuration guidance for a part target—not a promise that viewers will see the stream with one-second end-to-end latency. Apple HLS Authoring Specification for Apple Devices

Can you use RTMP and HLS together?

Yes. A typical architecture can use one protocol for contribution, process the incoming feed, package it for playback, and distribute it through an origin or CDN to a player. AWS’s MediaLive documentation describes workflows involving upstream systems, a MediaLive channel, and downstream origin, packager, CDN, and player systems. The exact protocol at each stage depends on the services you choose. AWS MediaLive supported input protocols

The practical rule is to choose the ingest protocol your receiving service supports, then choose the playback format your delivery service and audience devices can use.

Common decision mistakes and fixes

  • Choosing one protocol for the whole pipeline: Treat ingest and playback as separate decisions; they can use different protocols.
  • Assuming every platform supports the same inputs: Check that platform’s current documentation. The MediaLive input list is one service’s implementation, not a universal standard of platform support.
  • Calling HLS universally compatible: Verify support for the audience’s actual devices, browsers, and player rather than relying on a broad compatibility assumption.
  • Equating a part target with viewer delay: An LL-HLS segment-part setting is not end-to-end latency. Account for production, playlist, delivery, buffering, and player behavior, and measure the complete path.
  • Expecting low latency without end-to-end support: Confirm that the backend, CDN or cache, and player implement the required LL-HLS behavior.

Keeping a YouTube stream live from uploaded videos

If your goal is specifically to keep a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded recordings, that is a separate operational problem from choosing RTMP or HLS for a general streaming pipeline. StreamNeo is a cloud service for YouTube: upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud continues the loop without a computer, OBS, or home internet connection needing to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
