RTMP is a protocol that carries timed audio, video, and data messages from an encoder to a streaming service over a reliable connection. It is not the encoder and does not itself encode video. For YouTube, RTMPS is usually the practical choice when using RTMP-style ingest: it adds encryption in transit, and YouTube provides its RTMPS URL and stream key in Live Control Room.
What is RTMP streaming?
RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. Adobe’s protocol memo describes it as “a bidirectional message multiplex service over a reliable stream transport, such as TCP [RFC0793], intended to carry parallel streams of video, audio, and data messages, with associated timing information, between a pair of communicating peers.” In practical terms, an encoder sends a stream to an ingest server, which receives it for processing and delivery to viewers.
The encoder and the protocol have different jobs. The encoder—software or hardware—produces and sends the media. RTMP carries messages between that sender and the receiving service; it does not prescribe the video codec or perform the encoding.
How RTMP carries a live stream
RTMP divides messages into chunks and interleaves chunks from different message streams over the connection. Timing information and message details let the receiver put the pieces back together. The protocol memo describes timestamps in milliseconds relative to an epoch agreed between the communicating endpoints.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- The encoder connects to the service’s ingest server and establishes an RTMP session through a handshake and session commands.
- The sender publishes timestamped audio, video, and related data messages.
- The ingest server reassembles the messages and handles the media according to the service’s workflow.
That description is about transport and message organization. Whether a particular codec, resolution, or latency mode is supported depends on the destination service and encoder.
What is the difference between RTMP and RTMPS?
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. YouTube says, “It is RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection and provides encryption.” Encryption protects the connection in transit; it does not change RTMP into an encoder or guarantee any particular picture quality or latency.

| Ingest option | Encrypted | Video codecs shown by YouTube | YouTube’s stated use and tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | No | H.264 | Listed for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. |
| RTMPS | Yes | H.264 | Listed for normal, low, or ultra-low latency; adds encrypted transport. |
| HLS | Yes | H.264, H.265/HEVC | Supports HDR and HEVC and may suit 4K workflows; not for ultra-low latency. |
| DASH | Yes | H.264, VP9 | Supports VP9 and may suit 4K workflows; not for ultra-low latency. |
YouTube says HLS and DASH can provide better compression than H.264, which can mean higher quality at a given bitrate or similar quality at a lower bitrate. It also notes that these HTTP protocols generally have greater latency than RTMP because they are segment-based. The best fit therefore depends on whether you prioritize encrypted RTMP ingest and a lower-latency category, or need the codec options YouTube lists for HLS or DASH and can accept greater latency.
How do I get my RTMP stream URL and stream key on YouTube?
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to send.
- In the stream settings, retrieve the server URL and stream key. If you specifically need encrypted ingest, verify that the server URL begins with
rtmps; YouTube’s default display may show an ordinary RTMP URL. - In your encoder, select a YouTube RTMPS preset if available, or choose RTMPS as the protocol and enter the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream before you go live to viewers.
Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it in a screenshot, example, or public post. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s controls before using it again.

Choosing an ingest protocol
- Choose RTMPS for YouTube when you want RTMP-style ingest with encryption in transit and your encoder supports it.
- Consider HLS or DASH when the codec options YouTube lists—HEVC for HLS or VP9 for DASH—matter to your workflow and greater latency is acceptable.
- Check encoder support first. A protocol listed by YouTube is useful only if your encoder can send it and your stream settings are compatible.
- Verify the platform’s own documentation. YouTube’s comparison does not establish the settings or capabilities of another destination.
Troubleshooting YouTube RTMPS connections
SSL connection error
Check that the URL uses rtmps, that you copied the correct server address from Live Control Room, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube recommends trying port 443 if the SSL error persists.
Connection times out
Verify the server URL and confirm that the selected encoder or preset supports RTMPS. Re-copy the URL and key from the active stream’s Live Control Room settings rather than relying on an old configuration.

YouTube is not receiving the stream
Check that the encoder is publishing to the intended stream’s server URL and that the corresponding key is entered correctly. Also confirm that the protocol selected in the encoder matches the URL; an RTMP URL and an RTMPS configuration are not interchangeable.
