RTMP is a protocol an encoder can use to send a live audio-and-video feed to a platform’s ingest server. The server URL tells the encoder where to connect; the stream key identifies or authorizes the broadcast. Get both from the platform you are streaming to, enter them in the encoder’s matching fields, and keep the key private. RTMPS is the encrypted version of RTMP.

What RTMP does in a live stream

RTMP means Real-Time Messaging Protocol. In a typical live setup, a camera, screen capture, or other source feeds an encoder. The encoder packages and sends the audio and video over the internet to the streaming platform’s ingest system, which receives and processes the broadcast for viewers. Twitch describes its ingest subsystem as the first stop for incoming streams, where they are received, authorized, and registered. Twitch’s Video Broadcast guide describes software encoders, consoles, and hardware video encoders as possible sending tools.

The basic path is:

camera / screen / audio → encoder → RTMP or RTMPS connection → platform ingest server → platform processing and viewers

What are an RTMP URL and a stream key?

Server URL: where the encoder connects

The server or ingest URL points the encoder to the platform’s receiving endpoint. Some setups include an application path after the server address. Do not assume that one platform’s URL format works on another: use the address supplied for the specific destination and stream.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Stream key: which broadcast is authorized

The stream key is a platform-assigned identifier or credential associated with a broadcast. It is not the server address. Twitch documents a format of rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>[?bandwidthtest=true], with the server as the receiver and the key uniquely identifying the stream. That example is Twitch-specific, not a universal RTMP URL.

YouTube may provide the ingestion URL and stream name separately. Its API documentation says some encoders take these as separate values, while others require them combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. YouTube also documents primary and backup ingest addresses, including RTMPS versions. Use the exact values shown for your stream in YouTube’s live-stream API documentation and Live Control Room rather than copying an example from another service.

RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH: which should you use?

Choose among the ingest protocols your destination and encoder actually support. For YouTube’s third-party ingest options, the documented comparison was last updated 2026-06-01 UTC. The comparison below applies to YouTube, not every streaming platform. YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison lists the following options:

Protocol Encryption Documented codecs and use Trade-off
RTMP Not encrypted in transit in the comparison H.264; suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency Useful where low latency matters, but the connection is not encrypted.
RTMPS Encrypted using TLS/SSL H.264; suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency Provides encrypted transport while retaining RTMP’s latency options.
HLS Encrypted H.264 and H.265/HEVC, including HDR Segment-based delivery typically adds latency compared with RTMP and is not suitable for ultra-low latency; it may suit high-resolution needs.
DASH Encrypted H.264 and VP9 Segment-based delivery typically adds latency compared with RTMP and is not suitable for ultra-low latency; it may suit high-resolution needs.

For RTMPS, get the RTMPS URL from the destination platform rather than simply changing a URL yourself. YouTube Help says RTMPS is RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection and provides encryption. Its setup guidance says the ordinary RTMP URL may be shown by default, so select or retrieve the RTMPS address in Live Control Room if you want the encrypted option. Your encoder must support RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions suggest checking that the URL begins with rtmps and trying port 443 for certain SSL errors.

How to set the server URL and stream key

  1. Open the destination platform’s live setup. Create or select the live stream, then retrieve its current ingest URL and stream key or stream name. Twitch assigns stream keys, which can be retrieved in the broadcaster dashboard or through its API. For YouTube, use Live Control Room or the platform’s live-stream API information.
  2. Open the encoder’s streaming settings. Choose the destination’s preset if the encoder offers one. Otherwise, enter the exact server URL and key/name in the fields provided. Check whether the encoder expects a separate URL and key or one combined value; YouTube documents both patterns.
  3. Select the intended protocol. If you choose RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL supplied by the platform and verify that the encoder supports it. Do not substitute a Twitch URL, YouTube URL, or protocol-specific address for another destination’s settings.
  4. Start sending and check the platform’s reception status. Confirm that the platform is receiving data and review its stream-health or error indicators. YouTube’s API exposes stream states such as active, inactive, and error, along with health information and configuration issues.
  5. Use platform-specific bandwidth testing only when appropriate. Twitch’s documented bandwidthtest=true query parameter disables live viewing while checking bandwidth health in Twitch Inspector. It is not a universal RTMP setting.

Protect your stream key

Treat a stream key like a password: someone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to the associated channel. Twitch explicitly warns broadcasters not to share keys because doing so could compromise the channel. Retrieve or refresh a key through the platform’s official controls, and never show a real key in a screenshot, public support post, or example. Use a placeholder when demonstrating a configuration.

Common RTMP setup problems and fixes

  • The encoder cannot connect: Confirm that the URL and key came from the intended platform and current live setup, and that each value is in the field the encoder expects. Check whether it requires a combined URL-and-name value instead of separate fields.
  • The platform does not receive the broadcast: Check that the stream is started in the encoder and inspect the destination’s receiving status, health details, and error messages. On YouTube, the API’s stream state and health information can help distinguish an inactive stream from one with configuration issues.
  • An SSL error occurs with YouTube RTMPS: Verify the address is the platform-supplied RTMPS URL, that it uses the rtmps scheme, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube suggests trying port 443 for certain SSL errors.
  • A copied URL format fails: Replace it with the current address and key/name from the destination platform. The Twitch structure and YouTube’s URL/name formats are not interchangeable.
  • A Twitch bandwidth test appears not to go live: If you intentionally enabled bandwidthtest=true, Twitch’s option disables live viewing during the bandwidth-health check. Remove the parameter for an ordinary live broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos or a playlist, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops the videos after you upload them and add your YouTube stream key. The three steps are upload a recording or build a playlist, add the stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs at the quality you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live capture.
