There is no official ranking of the best RPG Maker horror games, and the label covers more than one kind of experience. This curated selection spans puzzle-and-trap horror, chase survival, eerie exploration, psychological stories, and gothic horror—so you can choose by the kind of fear and gameplay you want.

How to choose an RPG Maker horror game

Some games make you solve item puzzles while avoiding instant-death traps; others build tension through pursuit, unsettling exploration, or story choices. The recommendations below are grouped by their main appeal rather than presented as a definitive ranking.

Engine labels need care, too. A game can look and feel like an RPG Maker title without having been made in RPG Maker. In particular, Mad Father, Misao, Alice Mare, The Crooked Man, and Paranoiac are associated with WOLF RPG Editor, while Yuppie Psycho is identified as using a custom engine. They are useful neighboring games, but should not be counted as confirmed RPG Maker titles.

Puzzle and death-trap horror

1. The Witch’s House

A strong choice if you want a compact horror adventure built around exploration, item puzzles, sudden danger, and lethal traps. The original freeware game and its commercial remake are distinct editions; check the creator’s official page for the original or use the legitimate storefront listing for the remake rather than assuming a download mirror is safe.

2. The Witch’s House MV

This is the commercial RPG Maker MV remake of The Witch’s House, not simply another name for the original freeware edition. Steam lists Fummy as developer, DANGEN Entertainment as publisher, and October 30, 2018 as the release date. Its listing highlights puzzle-solving, traps, jump scares, remastered visuals, and additional difficulty settings. Check the live Steam page for current availability and platform details.

3. Ib

For players who want exploration and environmental puzzles in an uncanny art-gallery setting, Ib is a natural starting point. Its appeal is less about combat than about navigating an unsettling place and piecing together how to get out. Check the official or legitimate storefront page for the specific edition and platforms available where you live.

4. Ao Oni

Ao Oni is a chase-survival pick: explore a dangerous environment, solve what you can, and evade a pursuing monster. Choose it if active pursuit sounds more frightening than a slow, purely atmospheric story. Versions and availability can differ, so confirm the edition and source before downloading.

Surreal exploration and psychological horror

5. Yume Nikki

Yume Nikki favors dreamlike exploration over a conventional sequence of fights or puzzles. Its strange spaces and open-ended discovery make it suited to players who enjoy interpreting atmosphere and imagery rather than being guided by a tightly explained plot.

6. Space Funeral

This deliberately odd, surreal RPG is a good fit if you want unsettling imagery and an offbeat world rather than a standard haunted-house setup. Its horror-adjacent tone and RPG structure make it a useful change of pace within a list otherwise dominated by escape and survival.

7. OFF

OFF is a surreal role-playing adventure with a distinctive, unsettling world. It is better suited to readers seeking strange characters, exploration, and an unusual story than those looking specifically for jump scares or chase sequences. Verify the legitimate source for the version you intend to play.

8. Alicemare

Gothic horror and story-led choices

9. Pocket Mirror ~ GoldenerTraum

This gothic horror adventure suits players who want a story-led journey through eerie spaces, with exploration and choices at the center. Steam categorizes it as an RPG Maker gothic horror game and lists AstralShift and VisuStella as developers, KOMODO as publisher, and May 19, 2023 as its release date. Check the current Steam listing for live availability and platform details.

10. Mad Father

Mad Father is a useful recommendation for players after a dark, story-focused escape adventure. It belongs in the wider RPG Maker horror conversation, but not as a confirmed RPG Maker game: the reviewed roundup identifies it as made with WOLF RPG Editor. Look for the developer’s or an authorized storefront’s edition rather than relying on an unverified mirror.

11. Misao

If you want a haunted-school setting and a story that unfolds through exploration, Misao is a neighboring choice. The engine distinction matters: it is identified as a WOLF RPG Editor game, not an RPG Maker title. Check the official edition’s page for current acquisition details.

12. The Crooked Man

The Crooked Man leans on eerie locations and story discovery, making it a fit for players who prefer a gradual unsettling atmosphere to constant pursuit. It is another WOLF RPG Editor title in the reviewed roundup, so treat it as an adjacent recommendation rather than an RPG Maker game.

13. Paranoiac

Choose Paranoiac if you are drawn to psychological tension and unsettling exploration. Like the other titles in this section that sit near the RPG Maker scene, it is identified as a WOLF RPG Editor game, not an RPG Maker title. Verify the specific edition and legitimate source before playing.

Finding a safe, current edition

Freeware releases and commercial remakes can coexist, and one should not be assumed to match the other in content, presentation, or availability. A broad roundup notes that many games in the scene have Steam releases, but that does not establish a current listing for every individual title. Use these checks before you download or buy:

  • Identify the exact edition: original freeware, remake, or remaster.
  • Start with the creator’s official site or a recognized storefront, then check the live page for supported platforms and regional availability.
  • Avoid third-party mirrors unless the developer or a recognized translator explicitly endorses them.
  • Check the game’s own description for content details; do not infer a rating or intensity level from the RPG Maker label.

The two official storefront examples confirmed here are The Witch’s House MV and Pocket Mirror ~ GoldenerTraum. For other entries, current platforms and acquisition routes should be verified on their official pages; availability can change.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
