What to do depends on which Roku device is stopping and what “turning off” looks like. A Roku TV screen going dark, a separate streaming player rebooting, and a TV repeatedly returning to the Roku logo point to different causes. Start by noting whether you see a timer-like pattern, a warning or status light, or a restart logo; then follow the matching fix below.
First identify what is turning off
Roku can mean a television with Roku built in or a separate streaming player connected to a TV. When the problem happens, check what actually changes:
- The Roku TV screen goes dark after a predictable interval: check the TV’s sleep timer.
- A separate player restarts when you turn the TV on: check whether the player is powered by the TV’s USB port.
- A player shows a flashing red light or low-power message: investigate its power supply.
- A player shows a solid red light or overheating warning: address heat and ventilation.
- The TV displays a Roku or TV logo and keeps restarting: follow the Roku TV software recovery steps.
- The television itself switches off after remote input: check remote power control and the TV’s IR or CEC settings.
The symptom narrows down the right troubleshooting path; “turning off” alone does not identify a fault.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf a Roku TV screen turns off on a schedule, check its sleep timer
Roku TV’s sleep timer can turn off the screen after a selected interval. On the TV, go to Home > Settings > System > Time > Sleep timer. Change the interval or cancel the timer if one is active. Roku also documents other ways to control the timer, but this Settings path is the clearest place to check its current setting. The timer feature is not proof that it is active or that it explains irregular shutdowns in a particular home. Roku’s sleep-timer instructions describe the available controls.

If a streaming player reboots with the TV, check its power connection
Some Roku players connected to a TV’s USB port lose power when the television is turned off; some TVs also cut USB power in standby. When the TV is turned on again, the player boots up. Powering the player from a wall outlet instead avoids that TV-dependent power cycle. Roku lists compatible player examples, but model support can vary, so verify your exact device before changing its power setup. See Roku’s guidance on a player restarting when the TV turns on.
If the player reports low power, troubleshoot the supply
A flashing red light or an on-screen low-power or insufficient-power message points to inadequate power, not overheating. Roku’s localized Australia guidance recommends restarting the player, using its supplied USB cable, trying another TV USB port, or connecting it to a wall outlet. If the TV’s USB port cannot power the device, Roku’s power-on guidance says a 5V 1A USB adapter can be used. Check your exact player’s requirements and manufacturer guidance before buying or substituting an adapter; do not treat that rating as a universal fix for every Roku device. See Roku Australia’s low-power troubleshooting and Roku’s player power-on guidance.

Other light states can help distinguish power trouble from a picture or heat issue. Roku says a white light with no picture may mean the player is on, so check that the TV is set to the correct input. No light can mean the player is not receiving power. A solid red light is a heat warning in Roku’s guidance, not the flashing-red low-power indication.
If the player shows an overheating warning, cool it and improve ventilation
Roku Support notes, “It is normal for your Roku player to feel warm to the touch. This is by design and not a cause for concern unless you see the warning below.” Warmth by itself is not the documented warning sign: look for a solid red light or an on-screen “Your device is overheating” message.

- Unplug the player carefully and let it cool for at least 10 minutes.
- Move it away from direct sunlight, enclosed spaces, soft surfaces, and stacked electronics so air can circulate.
- If it is a Streaming Stick, consider an HDMI extender to move it away from the back of the TV. Roku notes that a free extender may be available, so buying one is not a prerequisite.
- If the solid red light or warning remains, unplug the player and repeat the cooling and repositioning process once. If the warning persists after that, stop using the device and contact Roku Support.
Follow Roku Support’s overheating instructions for the device.
If a Roku TV loops on its logo, use the TV recovery path
This branch applies when the television itself repeatedly shows the Roku or TV logo and restarts, stays dark while its power light flickers repeatedly, or restarts during setup. Roku UK says these symptoms usually mean the TV software did not load correctly or became stuck during an update.

- Unplug the TV from power for 60 seconds, reconnect it, and turn it on.
- If it still restarts, consult the official reset instructions for your TV model and use the model-appropriate factory reset.
- If the reset does not resolve the loop, use Recovery Mode only if your model supports it. Roku describes this as a deeper reset that clears data and reinstalls Roku software.
- If Recovery Mode will not start or the TV continues restarting after software recovery, contact Roku Support or the television manufacturer.
Factory reset and Recovery Mode can erase settings and data. Check your model-specific instructions before using either, rather than applying steps meant for a different television. Roku’s UK guide to a Roku TV stuck on the logo or repeatedly restarting explains the recovery options.
If the TV turns off after a remote command, check power control
Some Roku voice remotes control TV power through infrared (IR) or HDMI-CEC. If the television itself switches off after a remote action, rule out an accidental power command and check whether TV-control setup or the TV’s CEC/IR behavior is involved. This is a secondary check when remote input appears connected to the shutdown, not a general explanation for an unrelated restart. Roku’s voice-remote power and volume troubleshooting covers re-running TV-control setup and checking those control methods.
