The Rohde & Schwarz R&S FSV7 (order number 1321.3008.07) is a 7 GHz signal and spectrum analyzer. In AC-coupled mode its published range is 1 MHz to 7 GHz; selecting DC coupling extends the specified lower limit to 10 Hz. That distinction determines whether it can measure low-frequency content, conducted noise or DC-related signals. The FSV7 is now primarily a used or refurbished instrument, so installed options, firmware, calibration and condition matter as much as the chassis model.
Quick verdict
- Best for: conventional RF development, production, installation and service measurements through 7 GHz, especially where 1 Hz resolution bandwidth and a mature R&S measurement environment are valuable.
- Check first: whether your signal includes anything below 1 MHz, which analysis-bandwidth option is installed, the firmware and option list, and whether calibration is traceable.
- Look elsewhere: if you need substantially more than 7 GHz, modern real-time analysis, current wireless standards packages or long-term manufacturer support at predictable cost.
The phrase “AC coupled” is an operating mode, not a separate FSV7 model. Sellers should identify the exact rear-panel model and order number rather than using “FSV7” as a generic label.
What the FSV7 is
Rohde & Schwarz positioned the FSV family for RF development, manufacturing, installation, servicing and spectrum measurements, with optional signal-analysis applications. The family’s nominal upper limits are:
| Model | Maximum frequency |
|---|---|
| FSV4 | 4 GHz |
| FSV7 | 7 GHz |
| FSV13 | 13.6 GHz |
| FSV30 | 30 GHz |
| FSV40 | 40 GHz |
Use the order number 1321.3008.07 when comparing quotations or service records. R&S product-family information is available in the FSV/FSVA brochure.
#1 Best Overall
- Four quadrant source measure unit

- Ideal for semiconductor testing
- Can act as bipolar power supply or bipolar electronic load
What AC coupling changes
AC coupling removes the DC component from the RF measurement path, but it does not make an unsafe signal safe. You must still observe the input power rating and use external attenuation, limiting or filtering when required.
Use DC coupling when
- The measurement must include signals from 10 Hz to below 1 MHz.
- You are investigating audio-frequency or low-frequency modulation components.
- Conducted noise or other energy below 1 MHz is part of the requirement.
- A DC component itself is relevant.
Use AC coupling when
Your measurement starts at or above 1 MHz and you want the DC component excluded. In this mode, frequencies below 1 MHz are outside the FSV7’s published measurement range and should not be interpreted as valid results.
Some reseller catalogs show a 9 kHz lower limit. Treat that as a possible different configuration, earlier specification or simplified catalog field; the manufacturer data for this FSV7 identifies 10 Hz DC-coupled and 1 MHz AC-coupled operation.

RBW is not analysis bandwidth
Resolution bandwidth (RBW) controls the filter resolution of a swept spectrum measurement and ranges from 1 Hz to 10 MHz. Analysis bandwidth is the instantaneous bandwidth available for capturing and analyzing modulated signals.
FSV-B70 adds 40 MHz analysis bandwidth and is listed as user-retrofittable for frequencies up to 7 GHz. FSV-B160 adds 160 MHz for FSV4 and FSV7 configurations, subject to compatibility and option exclusions. A used chassis may support these options without having them installed.
Options that can change the buying decision
| Option | What it adds |
|---|---|
| FSV-B22 | RF preamplifier, 9 kHz–7 GHz |
| FSV-B25 | Electronic attenuator with 1 dB steps |
| FSV-B70 / B160 | 40 MHz / 160 MHz analysis bandwidth, with stated compatibility limits |
| FSV-B4 / B14 | OCXO / ultra-high-precision frequency reference |
| FSV-B9 | Tracking generator, 100 kHz–7 GHz |
| FSV-B18 | Solid-state drive or removable-storage configuration |
| FSV-K7, K9, K14 | Analog modulation, supported R&S NRP power-sensor and spectrogram measurements |
| FSV-K30, K40, K54, K70 | Noise figure/gain, phase noise, EMI and vector signal analysis applications |
| Wireless applications | WLAN, LTE, GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA and related packages, depending on hardware and firmware |
Separate four states when evaluating an option: physically installed hardware, firmware license enabled, platform-supported but absent, and service-center installation required. Ask for an option screen or license report; a seller’s statement that the platform “supports” B70, B160, B22 or K-series applications is not proof that the option is present or transferable.

Manuals and firmware context
Primary user manual
The R&S FSVA and FSV User Manual is version 13 for firmware 3.60, dated August 27, 2019. It covers operation, measurement modes, options, remote control, maintenance and troubleshooting.
Specifications document
The specifications PDF is version 13.00, dated May 2019. Use it for frequency ranges, RF-input data, bandwidths, performance figures, interfaces, environmental limits, dimensions and ordering information.
Menu labels, remote commands and option behavior can differ on other firmware or hardware revisions. The official manual page identifies the older FSV family marked 1307.9002Kxx as no longer maintained; therefore request the exact rear-panel identification rather than relying on a generic listing title.
How to select AC coupling
Exact labels depend on firmware, so confirm them in the manual for the instrument you receive:

- Connect the 50 Ω source to the N-female RF input with a suitable cable or adapter.
- Open the normal spectrum-analyzer measurement mode.
- Open the RF-input or input-settings control.
- Find the coupling control and select AC.
- Set the start frequency to at least 1 MHz.
- Choose an appropriate reference level, attenuation and external protection.
- Verify the displayed span and input settings before measuring.
The resulting trace is subject to the AC-coupled 1 MHz lower limit; a component below that frequency is not a valid AC-coupled FSV7 result.
Remote control and automation
GPIB and LAN are the principal control interfaces, with USB 2.0 ports for compatible storage and peripherals. The manual supplies the programming and remote-command details. A safe automation workflow is:
- Confirm the rear-panel interface, IP settings and firmware.
- Open the correct VISA/SCPI session for that interface.
- Query the instrument identification string.
- Configure frequency, span, RBW, detector, reference level, attenuation and coupling.
- Initiate or trigger a sweep, then read trace data.
- Close the session cleanly.
Do not copy command strings from another R&S analyzer without checking the version-appropriate manual.

Price and purchase routes
A Used-Line listing associated with Electro Rent showed $48,795 for a used FSV7 in the United States on August 16, 2026. This is an asking-price signal, not a completed-sale price; options, calibration, warranty, return terms, shipping and condition can change fair value substantially.
Electro Rent offers the FSV7 by quotation through its FSV7 buying page. TRS-Rentelco lists R&S FSV rental, lease and purchase routes at its FSV page; renting can validate the required options before a permanent purchase.
When to choose it—and when not to
Choose an FSV7 when
- Your work is conventional spectrum analysis through 7 GHz.
- 1 Hz RBW, a 50 Ω N input and the R&S ecosystem fit your laboratory.
- The required options are installed and verifiable.
- You have budgeted for calibration and possible storage or repair work.
Be cautious when
- The requirement includes below-1-MHz content but the listing only says “AC coupled.”
- You need wideband modulation capture and B70 or B160 is absent.
- The seller provides only a chassis model, no option list or no calibration evidence.
- The unit has an old drive, unknown firmware, missing accessories or no return window.
Compare another analyzer when
- The requirement exceeds 7 GHz.
- You need real-time spectrum analysis, current software or modern connectivity.
- Current cellular, Wi-Fi or 5G applications are essential and legacy licensing is uncertain.
- Purchase, shipping, calibration, repair and option costs approach a newer instrument.
For a current same-brand platform, compare the exact model, bandwidth and options in the Rohde & Schwarz signal and spectrum analyzer portfolio, which includes newer families such as the FSV3000. A refurbished FSV7 remains sensible when its verified capability matches the job and its total ownership cost is clearly below a supported newer analyzer.
