Neither a robo-adviser nor a human financial adviser is automatically the better choice. Compare what the specific service does, whether you can reach an investment professional, and the total cost at your likely account balance. A low headline advisory fee can be offset by fund expenses or other charges, while a human-led service may offer planning or personal contact that an automated portfolio does not.

What is the difference between a robo-adviser and a human adviser?

A robo-adviser is generally an automated digital investment advisory program. It commonly collects details such as your goals, investment horizon, income, other assets, and risk tolerance through an online questionnaire, then uses that information to create and manage a portfolio. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) notes that services, investment approaches, and features vary widely among robo-advisers. SEC: Investor Bulletin: Robo-Advisers

The labels do not tell you how much human help is included. Some automated services provide access to an investment professional by phone, email, or limited meetings; some restrict that access to accounts above a minimum. Others provide little or no investment-professional involvement. A human adviser’s planning scope and contact schedule also differ by provider. The SEC cautions that with a robo-adviser there may be no initial or later conversation with a person to gather information about your personal financial needs; that is not true of every automated service.

How do the costs compare?

Compare the total expected cost for your account, not just the advisory fee percentage. Providers may charge an asset-based fee, a subscription, an hourly rate, or a fixed fee. Costs can also include expenses charged by investment products and other direct or indirect charges. Ask what each fee covers, how it is collected, and whether it changes with your balance or service tier. The SEC’s guidance on fees explains that costs can affect investment returns over time. Flat fees and small balances

A flat subscription can represent a large share of a small account. In a September 6, 2023 SEC illustration, a $3 monthly fee on a $500 account equals $36 per year, more than 7% of the account value. The bulletin also gives $3, $5, and $10 monthly fees as examples of possible subscription amounts; these are illustrations, not a current market survey or typical rates. Why small percentage differences matter over time

The SEC’s July 23, 2025 bulletin models a hypothetical $100,000 investment growing 4% annually for 20 years. Its approximate ending values are $208,000 with a 0.25% annual fee, $198,000 with a 0.50% fee, and $179,000 with a 1.00% fee. These are scenario calculations, not forecasts, promised returns, or estimates of any named adviser’s fees. SEC: Updated Investor Bulletin: How Fees and Expenses Affect Your Investment Portfolio

Request a dollar estimate

Ask each provider to show the expected annual cost in dollars for your anticipated balance, including the advisory charge and investment-product expenses. Check whether account minimums, service tiers, or fee schedules change the estimate. The SEC’s fee guidance recommends asking what fees you would pay directly and what other costs you could pay directly or indirectly. What services should you compare?

Determine whether you need investment management alone or broader financial planning. An automated portfolio may be convenient for someone seeking a managed allocation and rebalancing, but those features do not establish that it covers questions such as retirement planning, taxes, or other financial decisions. Conversely, the presence of a human adviser does not by itself establish how broad the planning service is or how often you will receive advice.

  • Monitoring and updates: How often is your account reviewed, and what events prompt an allocation or advice change?
  • Human access: Is support from an investment professional or technical support? Is contact by phone, email, or meeting, and are there limits or account minimums?
  • Portfolio decisions: Who chooses and executes trades? Does the provider have discretion to trade or rebalance without asking you each time?
  • Tax features: Is tax-loss harvesting offered, and what tax implications should you understand? Do not assume that using it guarantees a tax benefit.
  • Products and conflicts: What investment-product expenses apply? How is the provider compensated, and are affiliated or proprietary investments, referral incentives, or other conflicts involved?
  • Access to your money: What are the rules for withdrawals, transfers, cancellation, or closing the account? Could selling investments during an exit have tax consequences?

The SEC says robo-advisers often seek to offer lower fees and sometimes lower account minimums than traditional advisory programs, but those are tendencies, not guarantees. Check the current terms for the provider and account you are considering. SEC: Investor Bulletin: Robo-Advisers

How to choose based on your needs

Use the questions below to narrow the choice. The appropriate service depends on the work you want done, the kind of access you need, and the price and limits you are willing to accept—not simply whether the service is automated or human-led.

  • Consider an automated service if its portfolio-management scope fits your needs, its decision-making and rebalancing process are clear, and you are comfortable with the available level of professional contact.
  • Consider a human-led service if you need planning or direct professional conversations, after verifying the adviser’s actual scope, availability, fee structure, and written terms.
  • Compare hybrid options if you want automated portfolio management plus some access to an investment professional. Confirm exactly who provides that help and how frequently you can use it.

What to review before signing up

  1. Ask for the all-in cost. Request an annual dollar estimate at your likely balance that includes advisory fees, investment-product expenses, and other applicable charges. Ask whether the fee can change.
  2. Match the service to your needs. Verify whether it covers investment management only or broader planning, and how often monitoring and advice updates occur.
  3. Confirm the contact and trading arrangements. Find out whether you can speak with an investment professional, any access limits, who makes trading decisions, and how rebalancing works.
  4. Read the provider’s disclosures. Review the advisory agreement and Form CRS, and examine the firm’s Form ADV materials for services, fees, conflicts, and other terms. The SEC explains how to use these documents when selecting an investment professional. SEC: Check Out Your Investment Professional
  5. Check registration and background. Use the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) database to look up the firm and, where applicable, the individual adviser. Review registration and available disciplinary information. SEC: Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD)
  6. Understand how you can leave. Before transferring or closing an account, check withdrawal and transfer requirements, liquidation rules, and possible tax effects.
