Riot confirms it is making an MMORPG set in the League of Legends universe, Runeterra. Beyond that premise, key details—including gameplay, platforms, monetization, and release timing—remain undisclosed in the sources available as of October 3, 2026. The clearest development update is Riot’s 2024 direction reset: the company said it wanted a more original take on the MMO genre, not a conventional MMO with a Runeterra theme.
What has Riot confirmed about the MMO?
Riot’s official MMO recruiting page describes the project as “an MMORPG based in the League universe” and frames its goal as bringing Runeterra to life. That establishes the genre and setting, but not a particular region, time period, story, player role, or playable character.

Why did Riot reset the project’s direction?
In a March 21, 2024 report, Game Developer said Riot had reset the MMO’s direction. Riot co-founder Marc Merrill explained, as quoted by the publication, that the project felt too much like the “mothership” game. He said it “can’t just be a standard MMO with a ‘Runeterra coat of paint,’ it has to feel like a ‘significant evolution of the genre.’”

The report said the change had happened some time earlier and that Riot expected it would likely be several years before it discussed the game again. This was described as a reset of direction, not a cancellation. The stated creative challenge was to make the MMO feel meaningfully distinct, rather than simply transplanting familiar League elements into a conventional MMO structure.
What gameplay has Riot shown or described?
The reviewed official project page and reporting do not confirm specific gameplay systems. There is no substantiated detail here about combat, classes, quests, character progression, group activities, PvP, crafting, or other mechanics. The MMORPG label and Runeterra setting do not establish how any of those systems will work.

GamesRadar’s October 2, 2026 interview coverage discussed Merrill’s view of the challenge of making an MMO and why Riot is pursuing one. It did not provide a gameplay reveal or release date. Merrill’s reference to Runeterra’s established fanbase was a reason the project might be worth attempting, not evidence that the game will succeed.
Is Riot’s League MMO still in development?
The project remains described on Riot’s official recruiting page, and PC Gamer reported on January 19, 2026 that former World of Warcraft lead producer Raymond Bartos joined the MMO team. Together, these are signs of an ongoing project and reported staffing activity. They do not establish a production milestone, the game’s scope, or when it might launch.

When will the League MMO release, and what platforms will it use?
No release date or release window is confirmed in the reviewed sources. GamesRadar’s October 2026 interview coverage says Merrill did not provide a date when asked. Platforms, subscription or free-to-play plans, monetization, and system requirements are also not established. Until Riot announces them, specific answers to those questions would be speculation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Runeterra background material reveal the MMO’s content?
No. Riot’s Korean-language April 22, 2020 announcement of the Realms of Runeterra book describes a physical setting book covering eleven regions, histories, factions, characters, stories, and artwork. It can provide background on the broader fictional universe, but it is not an MMO guide and does not confirm which places or characters will appear in the game. The announcement is dated and does not establish current language, edition, or stock availability.
