The RICOH GR IIIx is a strong fit if you want a genuinely pocketable camera with an APS-C sensor and a fixed 40mm-equivalent lens—and are happy to compose without zoom. Its tighter view suits isolating subjects and everyday details; it is less forgiving when you need to fit a broad scene into the frame. The main decision is whether that 40mm framing matches what you photograph, not whether it is universally better than the GR III’s wider 28mm-equivalent lens.

What the RICOH GR IIIx is—and what it is not

The GR IIIx is a compact, still-photo-centered camera built around a fixed prime lens. Ricoh specifies a 26.1mm f/2.8 lens, approximately equivalent to 40mm on a 35mm-format camera. There is no optical zoom. Its APS-C sensor measures 23.5 × 15.6mm and records approximately 24.24 effective megapixels; three-axis sensor-shift stabilization helps counter camera shake. (Ricoh product specifications; operating manual)

In practice, this combination prioritizes image quality and portability over framing flexibility. You can move closer or farther away, or use the camera’s crop modes, but you cannot zoom to change the lens’s optical field of view. Ricoh’s design goal was to keep the body compact while retaining substantial functionality; that is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independent size or performance test. (Ricoh feature page)

Is the 40mm-equivalent lens right for your photography?

A 40mm-equivalent view is a middle-ground framing: tighter than a wide-angle view, but not a long telephoto. It can make it easier to give a person or detail visual emphasis without filling the frame with as much surrounding context. The trade-off is that close-in scenes, interiors, and expansive landscapes may require you to step back—or accept that some of the scene will not fit.

#1 Best Overall
RICOH GR IIIx Premium Digital Compact Camera, 40mm Focal Length
  • GR with a 40mm angle of view: A focal length of 40mm provides a highly versatile angle of view that is close to the effective field of view of humans. You can enjoy snap expression with a new angle of view that has never been seen before.
  • The ultimate snapshot camera-GR unchanging concept: High image quality, Quick response, Portability, and Evolving
  • High image quality: Equipped with a GR lens that realizes sharp images, a 24.2M APS-C sensor, and a GR engine 6 that achieves both advanced image processing and response.
  • Quick response: High-speed startup of about 0.8 seconds after the power is turned on. Equipped with high-speed hybrid AF that delivers both high-speed autofocus and greater precision.
  • Portability: Controls are improved while maintaining the pursuit of portability.
  • Street and everyday photography: A good match if you prefer a more focused frame and are comfortable anticipating the composition. The independent RTINGS review considers the camera suitable for street photography and travel, citing portability, sensor image quality, stabilization, and Snap Focus. (RTINGS review)
  • Travel: Convenient when a small camera is more likely to come with you than a larger interchangeable-lens kit. The fixed lens means you should be comfortable changing your position rather than reaching for a zoom.
  • Landscapes, architecture, and groups: The tighter framing can make it harder to include a whole building, broad view, or nearby group when you cannot move farther away. Consider the wider GR III if those scenes are common for you.
  • Close-up details: Ricoh specifies a macro focus range of 12–24cm measured from the front of the lens. That helps with close subjects, though it does not turn the camera into a zoom or guarantee a particular macro result. (Ricoh product specifications)

If you can, try composing with both a 40mm-equivalent and a 28mm-equivalent view before choosing. Your usual working distance and preferred amount of context matter more than a general claim that one focal length is best.

GR IIIx vs. GR III: the key difference is framing

Both cameras share the compact, fixed-lens, APS-C approach. RTINGS describes them as otherwise very similar, with the lens as the principal difference. The practical choice is how much of a scene you want in the frame. (RTINGS review)

  • Large Format Image Sensor for Superior Detail: 24.2MP large APS-C format image sensor with high resolution that utilizes the characteristics of the high-resolution lens for high-definition detail reproduction
Camera Lens and field of view Best fit when
RICOH GR IIIx 26.1mm f/2.8; approximately 40mm equivalent You prefer tighter framing or want to emphasize a subject against less surrounding context.
RICOH GR III Approximately 28mm equivalent You want more of the scene in frame, especially for close-in views and broad compositions.

The GR IIIx also offers 50mm- and 71mm-equivalent crop modes. These narrow the recorded field of view but produce fewer pixels than a full-resolution image, so they are a framing option rather than a substitute for a longer optical lens. (Ricoh product specifications)

Snap Focus for pre-focused shots

Snap Focus sets a focus distance in advance so you can take a picture without waiting for the camera to acquire focus in the usual way. The listed distances include 1m, 1.5m, 2m, 2.5m, 5m, and infinity. It can suit quick candid moments when you can estimate how far away the subject will be. If your distance estimate is wrong, the subject may not be in focus; it is a useful technique, not a universal replacement for autofocus. (Ricoh product specifications; RTINGS review)

Autofocus expectations

RTINGS found autofocus not especially quick or reliable in its review. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee of how every photographer will experience it. For fast-moving subjects or situations where you cannot predict distance, autofocus limitations are worth weighing; Snap Focus is most useful when your subject distance is reasonably predictable. What you give up for the pocketable design

The camera’s compactness comes with practical compromises. RTINGS notes that the GR IIIx has no built-in viewfinder and no tilting screen. Ricoh lists the optional GV-3 external optical viewfinder for the GR IIIx; its 40mm-equivalent frame has approximately 85% coverage, according to Ricoh. That accessory may suit photographers who prefer an optical finder, but it is an additional item rather than a built-in feature. (RTINGS review; Ricoh accessories)

Video is limited to Full HD rather than higher-resolution formats. Ricoh specifies 1920 × 1080 recording at 60p, 30p, or 24p, with a maximum of 25 minutes or 4GB per recording; the camera may stop recording if its internal temperature rises. RTINGS also considers the camera poorly suited to extensive video use. It makes more sense as a stills camera with basic video capability than as a hybrid video tool. (Ricoh product specifications; RTINGS review)

Firmware and useful setup details

Ricoh’s support page lists GR IIIx firmware version 1.60 and dates its update file 2025-10-23. Check your camera’s installed version and read the release notes for that specific update before assuming it has a particular feature. Earlier documented additions include custom white-balance presets and Zone Select AF in version 1.41, followed by GR WORLD smart-device app support in version 1.50. The app support page describes image importing, remote shooting, and sending location information. (Ricoh firmware and download page)

For storage, Ricoh lists support for SD, SDHC, and SDXC UHS-I cards. The DB-110 is the listed matching spare rechargeable battery. Ricoh’s product page states startup takes approximately 0.8 seconds after power-on; treat that as a manufacturer claim, not an independent timing measurement. (Ricoh product specifications; Ricoh accessories; Ricoh feature page)

Should you buy the RICOH GR IIIx?

Choose the GR IIIx if you want a small camera with an APS-C sensor, value the 40mm-equivalent field of view, and expect to take mostly still photos. It is a less natural fit if you depend on zoom, need a built-in finder or tilting display, or expect extensive video features.

Choose the GR III instead if a wider 28mm-equivalent view better matches your usual scenes. Neither focal length is objectively superior: the right choice depends on how close you tend to stand and how much context you want around your subject. Current prices, stock, regional bundles, and warranty terms are not established here, so check those locally before buying; this comparison does not establish whether a GR IV-family camera is the better current purchase.
