Rewritable optical media are discs designed to be recorded, erased or overwritten, and read again. Common examples include CD-RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, and rewritable Blu-ray discs. The format label matters: a disc can be reused only with compatible recording equipment, and playback support can differ too.
What does “rewritable” mean?
A rewritable disc supports repeated recording operations. Unlike write-once formats such as CD-R and DVD-R, it is designed so previously recorded information can be erased or overwritten and the disc used again. Ecma describes CD-RW as a system for writing, erasing, overwriting, and reading CD information; ISO describes DVD+RW data as writable, readable, and overwritable many times.
“Rewritable optical media” is an umbrella term, not one disc standard. The labels identify different format families:
- CD-RW: rewritable compact-disc media.
- DVD-RW and DVD+RW: distinct rewritable DVD formats.
- DVD-RAM: another rewritable DVD format.
- BD rewritable media: rewritable Blu-ray formats.
ISO/IEC 29121:2021 includes CD-RW, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, +RW, and rewritable Blu-ray discs within its scope for optical-disc data migration. That grouping does not make the formats interchangeable.

How does rewritable recording work?
Several documented rewritable formats use phase-change recording. ISO/IEC 26925:2009 states that DVD+RW data can be written, read, and overwritten many times using this method. That is a format-specific description, not a claim that every rewritable disc uses an identical process.
How is a rewritable disc different from a write-once disc?
| Disc type | Recording behavior | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Write-once | Designed to be recorded, but not erased and rewritten. | CD-R, DVD-R |
| Rewritable | Designed for repeated recording, erasing, or overwriting. | CD-RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, BD rewritable |
The practical choice depends on whether you need to reuse the disc. For a one-time recording, a write-once disc may be sufficient; for repeated updates or reuse, choose a rewritable format that your recorder supports.

Will a rewritable disc work in any drive or player?
No. Compatibility depends on both the disc format and the device. A recorder must support the format to write to it, and a player must support it to read it. For example, Ecma notes that CD-RW has lower reflectivity than a conventional CD, so playback requires a CD-RW-enabled player. For DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, and Blu-ray media, check the device specifications for the exact format rather than relying on a general “DVD” or “Blu-ray” label.
Before buying blank DVD-RW discs or trying to use an existing one, verify that the optical drive supports DVD-RW recording or playback as needed. If your computer has no optical drive, an external writer is useful only if its specifications list support for the disc format you plan to use.

- Verbatim has been a leader in data storage technology since 1969, and guarantees this product with a limited lifetime warranty and technical support
Is there a universal rewrite count or capacity?
No single rewrite-cycle count or capacity applies to every rewritable optical disc. The standards cited here establish repeated rewriting but do not establish one universal cycle count or lifespan for all formats and products.
Capacity is also format-specific. ISO/IEC 26925:2009 specifies 120 mm DVD+RW disks with capacities of 4.7 Gbytes and 9.4 Gbytes; those figures apply to that standard, not to CD-RW, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, or rewritable Blu-ray media generally. ISO/IEC 17342:2004 covers 80 mm and 120 mm DVD-RW disks.

What the standards say
- ISO/IEC 26925:2009 specifies DVD+RW media and describes writing, reading, and overwriting data many times using phase-change recording. ISO reports that it was reviewed and confirmed in 2026 and remains current.
- Ecma-395, first edition December 2010, describes the CD-RW system and its playback compatibility requirement.
- ISO/IEC 17342:2004 covers 80 mm and 120 mm DVD-RW disks; ISO reports it remains current after review in 2020.
- ISO/IEC 29121:2021 addresses data migration for optical-disc formats, including rewritable media.
- The International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives’ optical-disc introduction describes CD-RW, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW as phase-change-based formats that allow earlier data to be erased and new data recorded in the same location.
