Revisr is a WordPress dashboard plugin for managing site files—and optionally selected database tables—with Git. It can create commits, push or pull changes to GitHub or Bitbucket, and restore earlier files or database states. It requires server-side Git and PHP exec(), and its published compatibility information is old: validate it on a staging site before relying on it in production.
What Revisr does
Revisr brings a Git workflow into WordPress. Rather than using Git only from a command line, a site owner can review changes, stage and commit selected files, inspect diffs, change branches, and work with a remote repository from the dashboard. The project describes its purpose as “A simple plugin for managing your WordPress website with Git.” (ExpandedFronts repository README.)
Its official site describes Revisr as a free plugin for managing and deploying websites, plugins, or themes using Git (Revisr). Git tracks the versioned files in the repository; database tracking is optional and can be limited to selected tables. Revisr also documents scheduled daily or weekly backups, change review, and the ability to discard unwanted changes.
What you need before installing it
- A WordPress site on a web server where Git is installed.
- PHP with
exec()enabled, because Revisr invokes server-side Git commands. - A remote Git repository if you want to push or pull changes through GitHub or Bitbucket.
- A staging environment for checking the plugin against your current WordPress and PHP versions.
The project documentation says Revisr can initialize a repository if the site is not already under Git. Its settings include repository behavior and the path to the Git executable. Server restrictions on running exec() or accessing Git can prevent the workflow from functioning; check with your host if those capabilities are unavailable. See the project README and WordPress.org plugin page.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How the Git workflow works
- Connect the site to a repository. Install Revisr, configure the Git executable path and repository settings, or use the dashboard to create a repository if one does not exist.
- Review changes. Check the files Revisr reports as changed and inspect diffs before including them. This helps distinguish intended edits from generated files or other changes you do not want to deploy.
- Stage and commit selected changes. Create a commit for the files you intend to preserve. A commit records a point in the repository’s file history; it is not, by itself, a complete backup of database content.
- Use a remote when needed. Configure a GitHub or Bitbucket repository to push commits or pull remote changes. Review the target branch and the changes being brought into the site before pulling or deploying.
- Test before production deployment. Apply and verify changes in staging first, especially when they affect plugins, themes, or database-dependent behavior.
Revisr also documents branch switching, file-diff viewing, scheduled backups, and reverting files. The exact workflow depends on how the repository and remote are configured; the README is the project’s reference for those functions (ExpandedFronts repository README).
How database backups and restores work
Git versioning of files does not automatically version WordPress content stored in the database. Revisr lets the site owner choose whether to track the whole database, selected tables, or no database. For selected tables, its documented backup process uses mysqldump to export them.

Before importing an earlier database state, Revisr makes a backup of the current database as a restore point. That offers a way back if the import causes a problem, but it is not a substitute for independently verified backups—particularly on a live site. The README explicitly recommends confirming database backups work before attempting a production revert and taking verified backups before and after major changes (ExpandedFronts repository README).
Safer restore procedure
- Make a separate, current backup of the live database and confirm that it can be restored.
- Test the intended database import on staging and check the site’s important pages and functions.
- Review which tables are included; a partial selection may not restore all related content or settings.
- Only then import on production, keeping the newly created restore point and independent backup available until the site has been checked.
Revisr also documents a development URL setting for automatic URL replacement when importing between development and live environments. Confirm the configured URL behavior in staging before using it on a production database, since an incorrect replacement can leave the site pointing at the wrong address.

Security precautions for the repository
Repository access can expose source files and configuration data if the .git directory is reachable over the web. Revisr’s documentation advises blocking public requests to that directory with web-server rules; NGINX needs an equivalent deny rule. Confirm the rule with your host or server administrator rather than assuming it is in place.
For HTTPS remotes, the project warns that a repository password may be stored in .git/config, so it recommends SSH authentication instead. Also add Revisr itself to .gitignore, as its documentation cautions that reverting tracked files could otherwise remove a newer version of the plugin. These security details are covered in the project README.

Compatibility: treat Revisr as legacy until tested
The repository metadata lists WordPress 3.9.2 as the minimum version and says the plugin was tested through WordPress 4.3.1. Those are legacy compatibility claims, not evidence that Revisr works with current WordPress or PHP releases. Later WordPress.org support questions include PHP 8 and remote-URL issues, but questions alone do not establish compatibility or a fix (WordPress.org plugin page).
Do not assume the plugin is safe for a current production site based on its historical requirements. Install and test it on a staging copy using the same PHP version, WordPress release, server restrictions, and remote-authentication method as production. Confirm commits, pushes and pulls, file restores, and database exports and imports before depending on it.

When Revisr may—and may not—fit
Revisr can suit a technically managed WordPress site when the owner wants dashboard-based Git operations, file history, remote push/pull, and optional database snapshots, and can verify the plugin in their own environment. Its value depends on having the server capabilities it requires and an operational backup and recovery plan.
It should not be treated as a substitute for a maintained deployment platform or a complete disaster-recovery system without further verification. Before choosing it over another approach, compare whether that option versions files, database content, or only posts; where data is stored; how granular restores are; its current maintenance and compatibility; how it handles secrets; and whether it supports staging, deployment automation, and environment URL changes. The available Revisr documentation does not establish current compatibility with present-day WordPress or PHP versions.
