The short answer depends on which software you are using, and the question can’t be settled from the title alone. In Chief Architect, the documented Reset Preferences control resets all preferences, not a single tab, and it takes effect only after you restart the program. A control labeled Revert does not appear in the official Chief Architect support material reviewed for this article, so its scope cannot be confirmed from that source. Claims that Revert restores only the current Preferences tab come from a secondary search result that could not be opened and checked, so treat them as unverified.
Why the software name matters
A “Revert” button is a common label, and many programs use it for different jobs: undoing unsaved edits in a dialog, discarding changes on the current page, or restoring factory defaults for an entire settings group. What the Revert claim does and does not establish
A search result matching this exact title says that Revert restores only the current Preferences tab. The page itself could not be opened for review, and the official Chief Architect article does not mention a Revert button or corroborate that statement. The claim may describe a real control in some version of the software, but the evidence available does not establish it. Read it as a lead to verify, not as an answer. - Note the exact button label, the dialog or tab it sits on, and the software version.
- Search the vendor’s official support site or user manual for that label, not a general search result.
- Test on a non-critical change: edit a setting on one tab, click the control, and check whether other tabs changed.
- Check whether the change applied immediately or only after a restart.
- Before any broad reset, export or note your current settings so you can restore them.
Practical takeaway
If you use Chief Architect, the documented reset affects all preferences and requires a restart. For any Revert button in any other program, or in a Chief Architect version where you cannot find Reset Preferences, the scope is not established by the sources reviewed for this article, and you should confirm it in that vendor’s documentation.
