Reusable PDF components reduce duplicated markup, but “component” can mean three different things. In a code-first template engine such as PDFMonkey, a Snippet is shared across templates while a Partial is defined and reused inside one template. In structured publishing, a component can be a page layout, stylesheet, resource, or setting. In the generated PDF itself, a Form XObject is a reusable content object. Choosing the right layer prevents scope, loading, and maintenance mistakes.

Start with the reuse scope

Classify the thing you want to reuse before choosing an implementation. The same invoice header might be a local partial during prototyping, a cross-template snippet when several documents need it, a publishing-system page layout when it controls page geometry, or a PDF Form XObject when the finished document must place the same graphic repeatedly.

Layer Typical scope Workflow What is reused
Template code One template or many templates Code-first generation Markup and logic blocks
Publishing template Document types and sections Structured publishing Page structure, styles, assets, and settings
PDF object model Inside one generated PDF PDF editing or generation API Self-contained text, images, and graphics
Data binding Each generation run Template plus input data Values supplied to replacement tags

These layers complement rather than replace one another. A data tag can populate a shared snippet; a publishing template can generate a PDF containing reusable objects; neither fact changes the component’s scope.

PDFMonkey Snippets: share code across templates

PDFMonkey defines Snippets as blocks shared across templates: “define them once on the Snippets page and include them in any template.” Use a Snippet for an address block, legal footer, invoice totals, or any markup that must stay consistent in several templates.

Load snippets before including them

A Snippet is not available merely because it exists in the account. PDFMonkey’s documentation requires the needed snippets to be loaded before use. Put one load_snippets call near the top of the template, listing every Snippet the template needs, then include the block where it belongs.

<!-- Load shared definitions near the top -->
{{ load_snippets "invoice_header" "legal_footer" }}

<!-- Reuse a loaded Snippet and pass values -->
{{ include "invoice_header", company: customer.company, invoice_no: invoice.number }}

{{ include "legal_footer", jurisdiction: document.jurisdiction }}

The exact variable names are yours to define. Keep the interface small and explicit: pass the customer, invoice, or other data the block actually needs rather than relying on hidden global state. If a Snippet is missing from the load list, inclusion can fail or produce an unavailable block, so treat loading as part of the template’s dependency declaration.

When a Snippet is the right choice

  • Several templates need the same structure and wording.
  • A change should be deployed once and reflected everywhere that includes the Snippet.
  • Different documents can supply the block’s data through key-value arguments.

PDFMonkey Partials: keep reusable code local

A Partial is local to a single template. Define it inline with partial and endpartial, then include it as often as needed in that template. PDFMonkey documents Partials as the option for a reusable block that does not need to be shared with other templates.

{{ partial "line_item" }}
  <tr>
    <td>{{ item.description }}</td>
    <td>{{ item.quantity }}</td>
    <td>{{ item.total }}</td>
  </tr>
{{ endpartial }}

<table>
  {{ include "line_item", item: order.first_item }}
  {{ include "line_item", item: order.second_item }}
</table>

Use a Partial while a layout is evolving, when the block is specific to one document, or when sharing it would create an unwanted dependency. If the same block later appears in a second template, promote it to a Snippet and add it to that template’s load list.

Snippet versus Partial

Question Snippet Partial
Reuse scope Across templates Within one template
Declaration Created on the Snippets page Declared inline with partial/endpartial
Availability Must be loaded before inclusion with load_snippets Available after local declaration
Arguments Passed as key-value pairs to include Passed as key-value pairs to include
Best fit Organization-wide shared markup Document-specific repeated markup
Maintenance risk One change can affect many templates Changes are isolated to one template

Publishing-system components are a different abstraction

Adobe Experience Manager Guides describes Native PDF templates as having four components: “Page Layouts, Stylesheets, Resources, and Settings.” This is a publishing architecture, not another name for a Liquid-style include.

Page Layouts

Layouts define page structure, including headers, footers, and content areas. They can be assigned to covers, chapters, indexes, and other page types. A layout therefore controls where content can appear, not merely which markup is repeated. Adobe also documents sample factory templates that can serve as a base for a custom template.

Stylesheets

Stylesheets centralize presentation rules such as typography, spacing, colors, and table appearance. A shared stylesheet can keep multiple page layouts visually consistent without copying declarations into every layout.

Resources

Resources are the assets a publishing template needs, such as images, fonts, or other referenced files. Treat paths and versions as managed dependencies; a missing resource can produce a valid-looking document with broken or substituted output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Settings

Settings hold generation and template behavior. They belong to the publishing configuration layer, whereas a Snippet belongs to template source code. Keep the distinction clear when documenting ownership: an editor may maintain page layouts while a developer maintains shared code blocks.

Reusable objects inside the PDF: Form XObjects

DevExpress’s Java PDF Document API describes a FormTemplate as a Form XObject: a self-contained content block that can contain text, images, and graphics. Its bounds define the visible area, and content outside those bounds is clipped.

Instances of the Form XObject can be placed on multiple pages with independent position, scale, and rotation. This is useful for a watermark, logo lockup, approval stamp, or repeated decorative panel. It is not equivalent to a source-code Partial: the reusable object lives in the PDF’s content model after generation.

Bounds and placement checklist

  • Set bounds large enough for every intended element; anything outside them can be clipped.
  • Place each instance at its own coordinates rather than duplicating drawing commands.
  • Use scale and rotation per instance when the same object must fit different page regions.
  • Keep source-template logic separate from PDF-object concerns so a later layout change does not require reverse-engineering generated content.

Data tags are binding, not component reuse

Adobe PDF Services documents a separate mechanism in which document-generation tags are replaced with supplied data. The tags are JSONata compliant. This answers “where does this value come from?” rather than “where is this block defined?” A shared footer can receive data through template variables, while a generation tag supplies a customer name inside that footer. Keep those responsibilities separate in design and testing.

How to choose an approach

  1. Decide the reuse boundary. Choose a Partial for one template, a Snippet for multiple templates, a publishing component for page-level structure, or a Form XObject for repeated finished-PDF content.
  2. Define the data contract. List the variables and key-value arguments the block accepts. Give optional values explicit defaults and document required fields.
  3. Assign ownership. Decide who changes markup, styles, page layouts, resources, and generation settings. Avoid putting page geometry inside a small code partial.
  4. Register dependencies. For PDFMonkey, load every Snippet before inclusion. For publishing systems, verify layouts, resources, and settings are attached to the correct template.
  5. Test the smallest representative document. Check long text, missing values, multiple pages, different sections, and every page type that uses the component.
  6. Promote deliberately. Move a Partial to a Snippet only when a second template genuinely needs it. Moving too early creates shared-change risk.

Common failure modes and fixes

“The included Snippet is unavailable”

Cause: the Snippet was not listed in load_snippets, or the name does not match. Fix: add the exact Snippet name to the load call near the top and verify spelling before the first include.

“The block renders but values are empty”

Cause: the caller passed a different key, or the Partial/Snippet expects a nested object that was not supplied. Fix: compare the include arguments with the block’s variable names and pass a complete object or explicit scalar values.

“A change unexpectedly alters many documents”

Cause: a shared Snippet was edited when the requirement was document-specific. Fix: split the exceptional markup into a local Partial, or introduce an explicit option rather than relying on template-name checks.

“The PDF has clipped logos or graphics”

Cause: Form XObject bounds do not contain the content. Fix: enlarge the bounds and verify placement at every scale and rotation.

“The page looks right but generated data is wrong”

Cause: layout reuse and data binding were tested together without checking the input shape. Fix: validate the supplied data against the tag and variable names, then test the component with both populated and missing values.

Versioning, performance, and reliability

Shared components reduce copy-and-paste drift, but they increase the impact radius of a change. Keep Snippets and publishing components under version control where possible, record their input contracts, and review rendered output for every template that consumes a changed shared block.

Reuse can also reduce document-generation work by avoiding duplicated definitions, but the cited documentation does not establish a numeric speed or size improvement. Measure your own workload if rendering time or output size is a requirement. Cache or prebuild stable assets at the publishing layer, while keeping dynamic data in the generation input.

For reliable releases, use a fixture set that includes a short document, a long document, every section type, missing optional data, non-ASCII text, and a PDF with repeated Form XObject placements. Treat a failed load, missing resource, or clipped bound as a build failure rather than accepting a visually incomplete PDF.

FAQ

Can a Partial be used by another PDFMonkey template?

No. A Partial is local to one template; use a Snippet for cross-template reuse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Form XObject replace a template Snippet?

No. A Form XObject is reusable content inside the generated PDF, while a Snippet is reusable source markup before generation.

Are Adobe document-generation tags a component system?

They provide JSONata-compliant data replacement. They bind values to a template but do not, by themselves, define a shared code block.
