If your last professional Java work was on Java 8, getting ready for Java 21 is not a matter of memorizing every feature released since then. Focus on the changes that affect your code and tools, refresh the parts of Java you no longer use every day, and practise with a small project on the target JDK.
Java 21 is a specific target, not a claim that it is the newest Java release. Its release notes are dated 19 September 2023; check the runtime, vendor, support arrangements, licensing and update policy required for the roles or deployments you have in mind.
What changed between Java 8 and Java 21?
The change is broader than new syntax. A Java 8 application may encounter source, binary or behavioral incompatibilities when moved to later releases; the module system and stronger encapsulation can also expose code that depends on JDK internals. Oracle cautions that “Every new Java SE release introduces some binary, source, and behavioral incompatibilities with previous releases” in its JDK 8 migration guidance.

Oracle says code using supported Java SE APIs and supported JDK-specific APIs should generally continue to work without change. Code that relies on internal APIs should be moved to supported alternatives. The JDK 21 migration guide lays out preparation steps, and its section on migrating from JDK 8 covers compatibility risks across later releases.

Check dependencies and removed components
Do not assume every tool or component familiar from the Java 8 era is still bundled. Oracle documents the removal of Java Web Start and the browser deployment stack in JDK 11, and Nashorn in JDK 15. Review the removed tools and components list and JDK 21’s removed and deprecated items against your application’s actual dependencies and deployment setup.
Look for changed defaults and feature status
Java SE APIs use UTF-8 as the default charset from JDK 18 onward. If an application relied on the platform’s default charset, test how it reads and writes data under the target runtime. The JDK 21 changes reference also describes language and runtime developments, including record patterns and virtual threads. Record patterns and virtual threads are final features in Java 21; other features described in JDK documentation may be preview or incubator features, so check their status before relying on them in production.

How should you update a Java 8 codebase?
Treat migration as a sequence of checks on the code and its environment. A successful compile alone does not establish that the application behaves correctly on the target JDK.

- Take stock: note the last Java version you used professionally, the kinds of applications and tools you worked with, and what still feels familiar. Use that to decide what needs refreshing rather than restarting from beginner material by default.
- Review the migration guide: read Oracle’s migration preparation guidance and Java 8 migration section. Check for removed APIs, tools and components, and investigate any use of internal APIs.
- Check the build and dependencies: confirm that the build system, libraries, plugins and deployment assumptions support the JDK you intend to use. The specific compatibility of your code and dependencies cannot be established without testing that project.
- Compile and test on the target JDK: run automated tests, investigate warnings and failures, and exercise important runtime behavior, including file and text input/output where platform-default encoding may matter. Resolve failures rather than treating a successful compilation as proof of compatibility.
Which Java 21 skills are worth refreshing?
Start with what your target roles and projects actually use. Modern Java fluency includes more than language additions: APIs, collections and streams, modules, JDK tools, monitoring, security and garbage collection can all be relevant. Dev.java Learn organizes free official material across these areas, making it useful as a map for targeted practice.

For language features, learn enough to read and explain records, pattern matching and virtual threads where they fit. A record can make a data-focused type more concise; pattern matching can reduce some explicit type-checking and casting; virtual threads provide a thread-per-task approach suited to certain high-concurrency workloads. Choosing a feature is a design decision, not a requirement to use it everywhere. Check the target release documentation for its stability and behavior.
Be selective about fundamentals too. Refresh syntax, generics, lambdas or streams if they have become rusty, but do not assume that an experienced developer must repeat an entire beginner curriculum. Oracle says its Java Tutorials “have been written for JDK 8” and directs learners to Dev.java for newer-release tutorials.

How can you show current Java skills to employers?
Build or update a small, understandable project using Java 21. Include tests and a concise explanation of why you chose its main design and language features. If migration is relevant to the work you want, describe what you checked—such as dependencies, internal API use, compilation and runtime behavior—without claiming compatibility you have not verified.

A project gives you concrete technical choices to discuss in an interview. It is practical evidence of work, not a guarantee of employment. You do not need to recreate a former employer’s codebase or disclose confidential work; an independent, clearly scoped example is enough to practise explaining your decisions.

Should you use a book or certification guide?
Books can add structure, but they are optional alongside the free official material. Choose based on whether you need a broad refresh, migration guidance, or exam preparation—not simply because Java has changed.

Dev.java identifies the Oracle Java SE 21 Developer Professional exam as 1Z0-830 and describes certification as a way to study newer Java material and a possible resume or interview talking point. That does not establish that certification improves any individual’s chance of being hired. Check current exam availability, objectives, costs and regional conditions before deciding whether it fits your plans.
What is a manageable first plan?
- Write down what you already know and what feels rusty.
- Use Dev.java to refresh only the language or API topics you need, then explore the Java 21 features relevant to your goals.
- Read the Java 8 migration guidance and identify likely risks in any codebase you can legitimately work with.
- Build and test a small project on the target JDK, then practise explaining your choices and findings.
- Add a book or exam guide only if its structure serves a specific learning goal.
There is no single study duration that fits every returning developer. Choose the next step based on your experience, the roles you are pursuing and the time you can give it.
