Retro Song Bird is an announced accessory designed to play music and sound effects directly from original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. A September 30, 2026 report described playback and a wider set of audio and cartridge tools, but did not give a confirmed price or release date.
What is Retro Song Bird?
Retro Song Bird is the name Time Extension used for a standalone device that reads Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges and plays their soundtracks. The maker-linked Bird Cartel project page describes a developing product called “GB Speaker”; its page still uses that project name, so the final product naming is not fully consistent across the available pages. Bird Cartel’s project page describes the device as a standalone speaker for unlocking Game Boy cartridge soundtracks.
Time Extension reported support for more than 1,900 cartridges. That figure is the publication’s reported count, not a verified title-by-title compatibility list, so it does not establish that every Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridge will work. Time Extension’s September 30, 2026 report is the source for the announcement and its feature list.

How does cartridge playback work?
According to Time Extension, a user inserts a cartridge and navigates its soundtrack, with controls to skip forward or backward and adjust volume. The report says the device uses “accurate, register-level sound emulation” and can connect to a stereo. Those are announced specifications reported by the publication, not independently tested results.

The appeal is that playback is intended to come from the original cartridge rather than a soundtrack file selected separately. The report does not explain which titles expose navigable music tracks, how the controls behave in games without a conventional soundtrack menu, or whether every supported cartridge offers the same playback options.
