For a self-hosted source that has to keep a YouTube channel live, Restreamer is the more direct fit. Its documented workflow publishes a source to YouTube through a Publication Service. Owncast is built to receive an RTMP broadcast and serve its own stream to viewers. The official Owncast documentation does not show a native YouTube destination, so feeding YouTube from Owncast would need a separate restreaming step that you configure and test yourself.

Neither product’s documentation shows that one stays online longer than the other. “Always-on” depends on the source, the network, the host and the publishing process all staying available, and you are choosing that whole chain when you pick either tool.

Which option to try first for a 24/7 YouTube channel

If the goal is a YouTube channel that plays pre-recorded video around the clock, without a machine of your own staying on, these are the three realistic routes, ranked for that goal:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. StreamNeo: always on from the cloud, so no computer, OBS or home connection has to stay running; any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; first day free.
  2. Restreamer: self-hosted, with a documented path to publish a source to YouTube.
  3. Owncast: self-hosted, built to serve its own audience stream; a YouTube feed needs an extra workflow.

The ranking reflects fit for a YouTube channel. It is not a reliability ranking, because neither self-hosted product has published uptime comparisons.

What each product is built to do

Restreamer

Restreamer is a self-hosted service that takes a video source and publishes it to YouTube and other services. Its current quick start describes running the Docker container and then setting up sources, a player and publication services. It notes that public-facing functions may require port forwarding on your router.

For YouTube, the documented steps are to select the YouTube Publication Service, enter a valid YouTube streaming ID, save, and start the stream. The guide that covers YouTube also advises a shutdown habit covered in the troubleshooting section below.

Owncast

Owncast receives a broadcast from an encoder over RTMP and serves the stream to viewers from its own web page. The official setup guide describes sending the encoder’s RTMP output to the server’s /live/ endpoint. The same guide says RTMP is broadly compatible with broadcasting software, while noting that not every setup has been tested. Its own wording is: “In general Owncast is compatible with any software that uses RTMP to broadcast to a remote server.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Owncast is an audience server. The reviewed documentation does not establish forwarding to YouTube, so a YouTube channel fed from Owncast depends on a relay or custom integration that you would need to source, configure and verify on your own.

What YouTube requires on its side

YouTube Help says the channel must have live streaming enabled before any encoder can publish to it. An encoder workflow then uses the YouTube Live server URL and a stream key. Keep the stream key private, since anyone holding it can push video to your channel.

Side-by-side comparison

Factor Restreamer Owncast
Designed to do Publish a source to YouTube and other services Receive an RTMP broadcast and serve its own stream to viewers
Native YouTube destination Yes, through the YouTube Publication Service with a valid streaming ID (official guide) Not shown in the official documentation; needs a separate restream setup
Basic setup Docker container, then sources, a player and publication services (quick start) Install on a server, make the web interface and RTMP ingest ports reachable, run as a background process or system service
Network exposure Public-facing functions may need port forwarding Web interface and RTMP ingest ports must be reachable from outside
Upload planning figure Not stated in the reviewed documentation Upload of about 1.5 times the stream bitrate, as a rule of thumb
Viewer delivery Not applicable to a YouTube-only publish Host needs outbound throughput for the concurrent audience unless video delivery is offloaded to object storage
Extra output qualities Not stated in the reviewed documentation Each extra variant uses more server resources; start with one output and add more only if the machine handles them
Behaviour after an interruption Interrupting a stream mid-event may stop YouTube saving the DVR archive; end the stream on YouTube first Not stated in the official documentation
Uptime comparison No controlled uptime comparison of the two products was found in the official documentation, so neither can be called more reliable on the evidence available.

Setting up each route

Restreamer for YouTube

  1. Run the Restreamer Docker container following the current quick start.
  2. Add your video source in the Restreamer interface.
  3. Set up a player if you want a viewing page as well.
  4. Add a Publication Service and select YouTube.
  5. Enter a valid YouTube streaming ID. A wrong or expired ID is the most common reason the publication will not start.
  6. Save, then start the stream.
  7. Open the router and firewall for any public-facing function that needs port forwarding.

Menu labels change between Restreamer releases, so match the names in the version you installed. The Restreamer archive guide for version 0.6.x is deprecated; use the current Publication Service guide instead.

Owncast for a YouTube-facing setup

  1. Install Owncast on a server using one of its supported downloads. Common Linux architectures and ARM builds are listed, but hardware compatibility is not guaranteed.
  2. Make the web interface and RTMP ingest ports reachable from outside.
  3. Configure Owncast to run as a background process or system service so it restarts with the machine.
  4. Point your encoder’s RTMP output at the server’s /live/ endpoint and confirm the stream appears on the Owncast page.
  5. If YouTube must receive the same stream, set up and test a separate restream path. Owncast’s documentation does not cover this step.

What “always-on” actually requires

An always-on channel depends on several parts that have to keep working at once. Each one is a separate point of failure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The source: for a self-hosted route, the machine running the encoder or the file playback process must stay on.
  • The network: Owncast’s guide recommends a wired network connection for stream stability, and a Wi-Fi link is more likely to drop.
  • The host: the server or home machine running Restreamer or Owncast must stay powered and reachable.
  • The process: the service must restart after a crash or reboot. Owncast’s guide asks for a background process or system service for this reason.
  • The publishing path: YouTube must keep accepting the stream with a valid key or ID.

Bandwidth, hardware and transcoding

Upload headroom for Owncast

Owncast’s guide recommends an upload speed of about 1.5 times the stream bitrate, which is a rule of thumb rather than a guarantee. Its illustrative calculation is 7.5 Mbps of upload for a 5,000 kbps stream. That example is not a minimum requirement, because the guide says actual CPU and network needs depend on the configuration and the audience.

The same guide says the host needs enough outbound throughput to serve the concurrent audience, unless video delivery is offloaded to object storage. A channel with many simultaneous viewers therefore needs more outbound capacity than a single restream to YouTube.

Restreamer’s bandwidth

The Restreamer documentation reviewed here does not give comparable upload figures. Plan the uplink with the same headroom you would use for any live encoder: keep the upload comfortably above the bitrate you send, and test the connection under load before you rely on it.

Transcoded variants and passthrough in Owncast

Owncast can produce several output qualities. Each extra variant consumes server CPU, so Owncast’s video guide advises starting with one output, testing, and adding variants only if the machine copes. Passthrough saves CPU, but viewers receive the source unchanged. That can make playback incompatible on some devices or add latency.

Troubleshooting

  • YouTube will not start the stream. Cause: live streaming is not enabled on the channel, or the stream key is wrong or stale. Fix: enable live streaming as YouTube Help describes, then copy a current stream key into the encoder or Publication Service without leading or trailing spaces.
  • Restreamer publication fails to start. Cause: the YouTube streaming ID is invalid. Fix: enter a valid ID, save, and start again.
  • Owncast stream cannot be reached from outside. Cause: the web interface or RTMP ingest port is blocked by a firewall or router. Fix: open both ports and set up port forwarding on the router.
  • Video stutters or buffers for viewers. Cause: upload is below about 1.5 times the stream bitrate, or the machine is on Wi-Fi. Fix: lower the bitrate, move to a wired connection, or get more upload.
  • Playback fails on some devices. Cause: passthrough sends the source unchanged. Fix: switch to a transcoded output at a bitrate the server can handle.
  • The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete after a Restreamer event. Cause: Restreamer was stopped mid-stream, which may stop YouTube saving the DVR archive. Fix: end the live stream on YouTube first, then stop Restreamer.
  • The service does not return after a reboot. Cause: the container or service is not set to restart automatically. Fix: configure the service or container to start on boot, as Owncast’s guide describes for background operation.
  • Owncast hardware is unsupported. Cause: the community-reported hardware list is not verified by the Owncast team. Fix: test your exact machine under the planned bitrate and audience before relying on it.

Evidence limits

  • No controlled comparison of uptime between Restreamer and Owncast was found, so neither can be called more reliable on current evidence.
  • Owncast’s bandwidth and headroom figures are its own rules of thumb and illustrative examples, not universal hardware requirements.
  • Owncast’s documentation does not show native YouTube publishing. Treat any relay or third-party bridge as a separate setup that needs its own testing.
  • The Restreamer archive guide for version 0.6.x is deprecated, and its interface and codec requirements should not be treated as current.

Copyright and reused content on a looping channel

A channel that plays the same recording around the clock is still subject to YouTube’s rules on reused content and copyright. Check YouTube’s current policy pages before you go live, not after a notice arrives, and make sure you hold the rights to everything you loop. StreamNeo also publishes a free copyright safety checklist at https://streamneo.com/tools/copyright-safety-checklist.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the channel to keep running without a self-hosted server, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. It loops your uploaded video, so no computer, OBS or home connection has to stay on. The steps are:

  1. Upload your recording, or build a playlist from uploaded videos.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live. The stream keeps running from the cloud.

The reasons it is different from the self-hosted routes above:

  • Nothing has to stay on at home.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps, as uploaded, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode and no quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card needed. The free day is one per account.
  • The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Shorter and longer terms are listed on the pricing page; you can cancel any time.

Every slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across your active slots. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
