A working local preview in datarhei Restreamer does not confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream. Check the outbound YouTube Publication Service, its bitrate and logs, and the matching event in YouTube Live Control Room before changing your source or resetting a stream key. First confirm that you mean datarhei Restreamer—not Restream.io, which is a separate service with a different connection model.

First, identify which “Restreamer” you are using

datarhei Restreamer is self-hosted streaming software. It sends video to YouTube through a Publication Service configured with a YouTube streaming ID or key. Restream.io is a separate hosted multistreaming service; its YouTube connection troubleshooting does not apply to datarhei Restreamer. If the product name or “offline” status is unclear, check the app or web interface where you see it before following product-specific steps. datarhei Restreamer’s YouTube guide and Restream.io’s YouTube troubleshooting article describe their respective systems.

Check the YouTube Publication Service, not just the local preview

Restreamer troubleshooting distinguishes faults in the video input, player streaming, and Publication Service. A source playing locally or a preview appearing in Restreamer confirms only part of the chain; it does not establish that the outbound YouTube connection is working. Restreamer’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking those layers separately.

  1. Open the active YouTube Publication Service and confirm that it is set up for the intended YouTube destination.
  2. Check that the service uses the correct YouTube streaming ID or stream key, then save the service if you made a correction. Do not share the key in screenshots, logs, or support requests.
  3. Look for the publication’s active status and displayed bitrate in Restreamer’s main window. The YouTube guide says the bitrate appears once the service is connected. No bitrate or an inactive publication means you should inspect that Publication Service’s process details and errors, rather than assuming the local source is at fault. Restreamer’s YouTube setup instructions explain the service and bitrate display.

Verify the intended YouTube event and ingest feed

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the event you intend to use. Check whether YouTube shows an incoming encoder feed or preview, and note any encoder or stream-health message. A feed visible in Restreamer but absent from the intended YouTube event can point to a destination, key, event-selection, or outbound-connection issue—not necessarily a broken video source.

  • Compare the stream URL and key configured in Restreamer with the destination details for the intended YouTube stream. YouTube’s live streaming settings guidance explains that an encoder uses a stream URL and stream key.
  • Make sure you are checking the correct event in Live Control Room rather than another scheduled or active stream.
  • Do not reset the key just because a status says “offline.” YouTube recommends obtaining a new key and updating the encoder when an encoder startup error indicates a key problem; otherwise, first verify the existing destination settings and process evidence. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.

Isolate source, publication process, and network

If the destination appears correct, test the layers one at a time instead of changing several settings together. Restreamer’s troubleshooting guidance recommends progressing from the video source through hardware and network to Restreamer settings. A virtual or test source can help distinguish an input problem from a publication problem.

  1. Try a virtual or test source. If it also fails to reach YouTube, the original media source is less likely to be the cause.
  2. Inspect the YouTube Publication Service process details and logs for errors, then generate a process report if the issue persists. If the test source works, return to the original input and investigate that source and its transport path.
  3. Check YouTube’s encoder messages and stream health. YouTube advises using a current encoder and checking outbound internet connectivity when the encoded stream appears healthy but YouTube is not receiving it. Follow YouTube’s troubleshooting steps for the message shown in Live Control Room.

Common symptoms and what to check

What you see What it establishes Next check
The source or player works in Restreamer, but YouTube says offline The local input or player may be active; YouTube receipt is not confirmed. Check Publication Service status, bitrate, process details, and the intended YouTube event.
No publication bitrate or active YouTube service is shown The outbound publication is not confirmed as connected. Inspect the Publication Service process details and errors; verify the destination configuration.
YouTube shows an encoder startup or key error YouTube is reporting a destination or encoder problem. Follow the specific message; verify the stream URL and key, and replace the key only when the error points to it.
A virtual source reaches YouTube but the original does not The publication path can work with the test input. Investigate the original input and its path to Restreamer.
The source looks healthy but YouTube has no incoming feed Local source health alone does not confirm a working outbound path. Review process errors, encoder health, and outbound internet connectivity.

When and how to escalate

If the status remains inconsistent after these checks, collect evidence that lets support separate a source problem from a destination or transport problem:

Its documentation pages report updates roughly three years ago, so labels may differ in newer versions; use the process evidence and your installed version rather than relying on a label being identical.
