If your Restream YouTube stream has no sound, first find where the audio disappears: check the video file, the encoder’s audio meter and preview, a local recording, YouTube Live Control Room, then playback on another device. If the local recording is silent too, investigate the source or encoder setup. If it has sound, focus on the outgoing audio track, YouTube’s ingestion, or playback settings.
The same checks help whether you upload and schedule a pre-recorded event in Restream or play a file through OBS or another encoder. The exact controls differ, and the file and scheduling requirements for Restream’s upload workflow are not established here.
Find the stage where audio stops
Before changing settings, note whether the Restream event started, whether YouTube displays it, and whether the silence affects all viewers or only one device. Compare what you hear at each stage:
- Source file: Play the video locally and confirm that its audio is present and audible.
- Encoder: While the video plays, watch the encoder’s audio meter and listen to its preview, if available. A moving meter indicates that an audio source is producing a signal, though it does not by itself prove the correct track is being sent.
- Local recording: Record a short sample of the encoder output and play it back. Restream recommends comparing the local recording with the outgoing stream.
- YouTube: Check the event preview and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Another playback device: Test the stream in a different browser or on another device to separate a stream problem from a local playback issue.
Restream’s no-audio guidance recommends using the encoder meter and comparing a local recording with the stream. If the recording has sound but the live stream does not, the source is less likely to be the problem.

If the source or encoder preview is silent
Confirm the video’s audio and selected source
Play the file outside the streaming setup. If it is silent there too, troubleshoot the file or the application playing it before changing YouTube settings. If local playback works, make sure the encoder is capturing audio from the intended file or playback source—not an unrelated device.
Check mute, routing, and track assignment
- Confirm the audio source is enabled and not muted in the encoder.
- Watch its meter during playback. If it does not move, check the selected source and whether the operating system or playback application is exposing audio to the encoder.
- Verify that the source is routed to the audio track being sent to the stream.
- Listen to the encoder preview, then make a brief local recording to see whether the audio survives the encoder output.
Restream notes that some platforms can mute content after detecting copyright issues. Treat that as one possibility only if the source and encoder are producing sound but the platform playback is silent; do not assume copyright muting without a platform indication.

If the recording has sound but YouTube does not
Read YouTube Live Control Room’s audio diagnostics
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and read the stream-health messages. YouTube documents ingestion errors for a stream with no audio, multiple audio streams, an unsupported audio codec, and an incorrect sample rate. For a missing-audio message, YouTube notes that some encoders have a checkbox to enable audio; it also says to supply only one audio stream.
Check the encoder’s audio settings against Restream’s YouTube setup guide. It lists AAC or MP3, 128 Kbps stereo audio or 384 Kbps for 5.1, and a 44.1 KHz stereo or 48 KHz 5.1 sample rate. These are guide recommendations, not settings available under identical names in every encoder. Use the health message and the controls your encoder actually provides to identify a mismatch.

Separate an encoder-output issue from a delivery issue
YouTube recommends checking audio and video directly in the encoder. If the preview or local recording is faulty, investigate the audio source, encoder errors, and CPU load. If the encoder preview and recording sound healthy but the YouTube preview does not, test the outbound internet connection and check for further YouTube health messages.
If YouTube preview has sound but a viewer hears none
Check the player and device
If only one viewer is affected, check the YouTube player’s mute and volume controls, the browser or app volume, and the device’s system sound settings. Try another browser or restart the affected browser or device. If other viewers can hear the stream, these local checks are more relevant than changing the encoder.

Investigate desktop-versus-mobile differences
If desktop playback works but a mobile device is silent or degraded, mono compatibility or phase may be involved. YouTube documents that stereo audio with poor mono compatibility can sound degraded or be muted when a mobile device converts it to mono. Check the audio’s phase and test mono playback rather than assuming the stream has no audio for everyone.

For a planned broadcast, YouTube advises setting up encoders two hours before the event, starting them 15 minutes before it, checking the Live Control Room preview before going live, and monitoring audio and video during the stream. Its streaming tips say: “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.”

- Make a local recording and listen to it before the event.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for audio warnings before relying on the stream.
- Verify playback on a second device if a viewer reports silence.
