WordPress already supports responsive images without Cloudinary. Since WordPress 4.4, its generated image markup can include srcset (candidate image URLs) and sizes (a layout-width hint), allowing the browser to select an appropriate available file. Cloudinary is an optional media-delivery layer: its WordPress plugin can synchronize assets, deliver configured media from Cloudinary URLs and CDN infrastructure, and generate transformed breakpoint variants.
What WordPress does by itself
WordPress core creates intermediate image sizes when media is uploaded and can expose those candidates in responsive markup. The official handbook describes the feature this way: “Since WordPress 4.4, native responsive images is supported by including srcset and sizes attributes to the image markup it generates.” WordPress Developer Resources
srcset supplies choices
A typical srcset lists the same image at several widths. The browser uses those URLs as candidates and chooses one based on the viewport, display density and other loading conditions. WordPress is using files it knows about, such as generated intermediate sizes; it is not creating a unique file for every possible screen width.
sizes describes the rendered width
sizes tells the browser how wide the image is expected to appear in the layout. If that hint does not match the theme’s columns, margins or breakpoints, the browser can select an unnecessarily large or small candidate. WordPress provides a default calculation, but the handbook notes that themes may need to adjust it with wp_calculate_image_sizes. WordPress also does not add or modify srcset or sizes when those attributes already exist in the content HTML. WordPress Developer Resources

What Cloudinary’s WordPress integration changes
Cloudinary’s plugin is not a prerequisite for WordPress responsive markup. It addresses where media is stored and delivered, and which transformations are applied. For media configured for Cloudinary delivery, the plugin can synchronize the WordPress media library, replace the rendered media URL with a Cloudinary URL, and deliver the asset through Cloudinary’s CDN. Its documented delivery options include image optimization, lazy loading, responsive images and transformations. Individual assets can still be delivered directly from WordPress when that is the chosen configuration. Cloudinary’s WordPress plugin documentation
Cloudinary responsive settings generate a width set
When the plugin’s responsive-image option is enabled, its responsive breakpoint generator creates a set of widths. This is a finite set of derived assets, not a promise that every viewport receives a unique file. The documented controls are:

Cloudinary’s current plugin documentation says the default maximum is five responsive image sizes. That is a vendor product default, not an independent performance measurement or guarantee, and defaults can change. Generating responsive derivatives increases Cloudinary transformation usage. WordPress core and Cloudinary compared
| Question | WordPress core | Cloudinary option |
|---|---|---|
| Where do variants come from? | WordPress-generated intermediate sizes. | Cloudinary-generated or transformed delivery variants, synchronized from WordPress media when configured. |
| How does the browser choose? | HTML srcset and sizes. |
HTML srcset/sizes can point to dynamic Cloudinary transformation URLs; other Cloudinary patterns use JavaScript or client hints. |
| Delivery location | Your WordPress media URL and hosting/CDN arrangement. | Cloudinary URL and CDN for media selected for Cloudinary delivery. |
| Compatibility | HTML responsive-image markup has broad browser support. | Cloudinary documents client-hint delivery as currently limited to Chromium-based browsers; HTML markup remains the broadly compatible approach. |
| Operational trade-off | More WordPress sizes consume storage and can increase the number of files managed. | More derived transformations can increase usage; excessive variants can reduce cache reuse. |
Choosing a Cloudinary responsive strategy
HTML srcset with dynamic transformations
Cloudinary’s responsive-images documentation describes HTML srcset and sizes whose URLs contain dynamic transformations. The browser makes the selection without waiting for a JavaScript library; Cloudinary presents this as a strong pattern for improving Largest Contentful Paint. That is vendor guidance, not a measured result for every WordPress site. Cloudinary responsive images

JavaScript selection
A JavaScript approach can work from one dynamic URL and calculate a request in the browser, but the script may run before the image request is initiated. It therefore introduces a request-timing trade-off rather than automatically improving performance.
Client hints
Client hints can let the CDN use browser-provided display information when selecting a transformation. Cloudinary currently documents this route as working only in Chromium-based browsers and still requiring a layout-dependent sizes attribute. Treat it as an enhancement with a compatibility fallback, not as a universal replacement for HTML markup. Cloudinary responsive images

How many breakpoints should you generate?
Breakpoint count is a balance between fit and reuse. Too few widths can send an image substantially larger than its displayed size. Too many create more derived assets, can increase transformation usage and can fragment CDN cache keys. Cloudinary states that “Having too many image versions reduces the number of CDN cache hits for requested images and increases the average delivery time for images to your users.” Cloudinary responsive HTML documentation
- Start with the documented maximum of five only if that range represents your actual layouts; it is not a guaranteed optimum.
- Set
min_widthandmax_widtharound real rendered widths rather than every device marketed to visitors. - Use
bytes_stepto avoid generating consecutive files whose byte savings are negligible. - Review Cloudinary usage after enabling the setting, because each additional derived transformation has an operational cost.
Implementation and verification checklist
- Inspect the WordPress output first. View an image on a representative page and confirm that the HTML contains
srcsetand an accuratesizesvalue. Correct the theme’s size calculation if the declared layout width is wrong. - Decide which media needs Cloudinary delivery. Synchronize the relevant WordPress media and configure Cloudinary delivery and transformations in the plugin rather than assuming every attachment must move.
- Configure responsive breakpoints. In the plugin’s responsive-image settings, review the maximum image count, byte step, minimum width and maximum width. Remember that the default maximum of five is a vendor setting.
- Check for accelerator conflicts. Cloudinary advises disabling accelerators from other plugins so media is delivered from the Cloudinary CDN. Follow that vendor guidance, then verify the result in the rendered page rather than trusting a settings screen. Cloudinary’s WordPress plugin documentation
- Inspect an actual request. Use the browser’s page source or network panel to confirm whether the image URL is a Cloudinary URL, whether the expected transformation is present, and which candidate was requested at the viewport you are testing.
- Test representative layouts. Check mobile, tablet and desktop content widths, plus high-density displays. Compare request dimensions and file sizes; do not claim a Core Web Vitals improvement without measuring your own site before and after.
Common failure modes
The page has srcset, but the image is still too large
The likely issue is an inaccurate sizes hint or a theme/plugin that supplied its own attributes. Fix the layout-dependent calculation before adding more Cloudinary breakpoints.

Cloudinary is configured, but the request is not from Cloudinary
An accelerator, optimization plugin, cache layer or per-asset delivery choice may still be serving the WordPress URL. Inspect the final rendered URL and network request, then remove conflicting acceleration according to Cloudinary’s setup guidance.
Usage rises after enabling responsive images
Responsive generation creates derived assets and therefore can increase transformation usage. Reduce the width range or maximum count, increase the byte step where appropriate, and retain only variants that correspond to real layouts.
Bottom line
Use WordPress’s native srcset/sizes support when your main requirement is browser-selected responsive images. Add Cloudinary when you also need hosted media synchronization, CDN delivery, centralized transformations or a managed breakpoint-generation workflow. Keep the systems conceptually separate, validate the theme’s sizes value, and verify the final URL and measured behavior on your own site.
