Yes—you can replace a TrueHD track in an MKV with AC-3 without re-encoding the video. Use FFmpeg to copy the video stream and encode the chosen audio track, or use HandBrake to select AC-3 in its audio settings. AC-3 is a lossy conversion; passthrough preserves TrueHD and does not convert it.
Choose the conversion method
Use FFmpeg if you want explicit control over which video, audio, and subtitle streams go into the output. Use HandBrake if you prefer a graphical interface. Both approaches can create an MKV with AC-3 audio; the right choice depends on the tracks you want to keep and the playback device’s codec and channel support.
- FFmpeg: map the streams deliberately, copy video, and encode the selected audio as AC-3. See the FFmpeg stream and output options and its AC-3 encoder documentation.
- HandBrake: choose MKV as the output format, select the intended audio track, and choose AC-3 as its encoder. HandBrake treats AC-3 encoding and TrueHD passthrough as separate options; encoding re-creates the audio rather than copying it unchanged. See its audio codec guide.
Convert the track with FFmpeg
- Inspect the MKV first. Identify the video stream, the intended TrueHD audio track, its language and channel layout, and any subtitles or other tracks you need to retain. Do not assume the first audio track is the one you want.
- Keep the original file intact and choose a different output filename.
- Adapt this command after checking the stream order:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -map 0:s? -c:v copy -c:a ac3 -c:s copy output.mkv - Check the output’s streams and test playback on the device or playback chain that needs AC-3.
The example selects the first video stream, first audio stream, and available subtitle streams. It encodes the selected audio as AC-3, copies video without re-encoding, and copies subtitles. It does not keep other audio tracks or every possible stream. Change the maps to match your file; the correct AC-3 bitrate and channel mixdown depend on the source and target, so this command does not specify universal settings. FFmpeg documents stream selection and codec controls in its command-line documentation and lists audio codecs in its general documentation.
Set up the conversion in HandBrake
- Open the source MKV and select MKV for the output container.
- In the audio settings, select the track you intend to convert and choose AC-3 as its encoder.
- Choose a mixdown suited to the playback path: stereo for a stereo endpoint, or a supported multichannel layout for surround equipment.
- Start the encode, then verify that the output contains the intended audio and any subtitles or chapters you need.
HandBrake’s container documentation describes its MKV workflow, while its surround sound guide explains mixdown and surround handling. Selecting passthrough instead of AC-3 encoding retains the original audio; it does not create an AC-3 track.

Decide whether to keep the TrueHD track
If preserving the source audio matters, keep TrueHD as a separate track and add an AC-3 compatibility track, provided your chosen workflow can produce and retain both. If the goal is simply to replace TrueHD, encode the selected track and omit the original from the output. In either case, make the track selection intentional and verify the resulting file.

What changes—and what does not
- Audio quality: TrueHD-to-AC-3 conversion is lossy, so the AC-3 track is not a bit-for-bit copy.
- Video: In the FFmpeg example,
-c:v copycopies the video stream rather than re-encoding it. - Container versus playback: MKV can hold TrueHD and AC-3 in HandBrake’s workflow, but a container’s ability to hold a codec does not mean a particular TV, player, or receiver can decode or pass it through. Confirm the target device’s support; HandBrake documents its supported formats in the container guide.
- Channels: The appropriate stereo or multichannel output depends on the playback setup, not just the source track. HandBrake’s surround sound guide covers mixdown options.
Verify the file before replacing the original
- Confirm the output has an AC-3 audio track and that it is the language and track you intended.
- For FFmpeg, confirm the video stream was copied as intended.
- Check that required subtitles and chapters remain; stream handling depends on the maps and tool settings you used.
- Play the output through the actual target device or receiver. MKV support alone does not guarantee AC-3 playback compatibility.
