To rename a smart plug in Alexa, open the Alexa app, go to Devices, select the plug, open its settings, and tap Edit Name. Enter the new name and finish the edit as prompted. The route below is from Amazon’s instructions for Amazon Smart Plug; the app layout can vary, so use Edit Name as the key label if navigation differs.

How to rename a smart plug in the Alexa app

  1. Open the Alexa app and tap Devices.

  2. If you see All Devices, tap it. Otherwise, locate the plug in the device list.

  3. Tap the smart plug you want to rename.

  4. Open its settings. Amazon’s instructions for Amazon Smart Plug describe tapping the gear icon in the upper-right corner.

Amazon Basics Smart Plug, Works with Alexa Only, Voice Control, Remote APP Control, Schedule, Compact Design, Versatile, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, No Hub Required, 4-Pack, White
    • SIMPLE TO SET UP WITH ALEXA: Get started in minutes with multiple setup options, including a zero touch experience when you select "Link device to your Alexa account" at checkout
    • CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: Schedule plugged-in appliances like lights or fans to turn on/off automatically, or control them remotely via the Alexa app when you’re away
    • COMPACT DESIGN: The plug fits perfectly into 1 socket, leaving remaining sockets and outlets free for use; ideal for multiple appliances like holiday lighting, heaters, fans, lamps, water kettles, coffee makers, and more
    • CUSTOMIZE ROUTINES: Schedule your smart plug to turn on/off either at designated times, with a voice command, or even at sunrise and sunset
    • NO 3RD PARTY APPS OR HUBS REQUIRED: Set up and manage connected devices directly in the Alexa app; no need for additional smart hubs or 3rd party apps

Amazon staff provided this route for Amazon Smart Plug in 2023. Amazon’s developer documentation confirms that a customer can change a smart-home device’s name in its settings, and Amazon’s general Alexa Help also uses the Edit Name label. The general Help instructions concern Echo naming, so they support the label rather than the plug-specific navigation.

What name should you use?

Choose a short, distinctive name that describes what the plug controls, such as Living Room Lamp or Coffee Maker. These are practical suggestions, not official Alexa naming requirements. After changing the name, use the name displayed in the app when asking Alexa to control the plug. Amazon’s developer documentation illustrates voice control with the pattern “Alexa, turn on device name.”

If the smart plug is missing from Devices

Renaming works on a plug that is already connected to Alexa. If it is not listed, add or connect it first: in the Alexa app, open Devices, tap the plus icon, choose Add Device, select the smart-home device type and brand, and follow the app’s instructions. Amazon says compatible devices carry the Works with Alexa badge and notes that most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work only on 2.4 GHz bands. These are setup considerations, not renaming steps.
