Removing an Xbox console from your Microsoft account’s device list does not, by itself, close your Microsoft account. The key is choosing the right action: remove a console you no longer own, unlink a device to free a Microsoft Store slot, or close the entire account. Only account closure puts your broader account access and content at risk.
What does “remove Xbox” mean?
Microsoft treats device management and account closure as separate actions. Removing or unlinking a console affects its device listing or Microsoft Store device count; closing the Microsoft account is a different process with much wider consequences. Microsoft’s guidance for selling, gifting, or recycling a console and its device-management instructions are distinct from closing an account.

Will removing an Xbox delete your profile or games?
Removing a console listing is not the same as deleting the Microsoft account. Microsoft’s device-management guidance does not say that removing a console deletes your Xbox profile, gamertag, or purchases. It also does not establish that an Xbox profile can be moved to another Microsoft account, so do not treat device removal as a way to transfer a profile.

Microsoft says that if you reopen the account within the chosen period, your Xbox profile gamertag, Gamerscore, and purchased content are available again. That confirmation applies to reopening during the grace period; it is not a promise that the profile or purchases remain available after permanent deletion.

If you’re selling, gifting, or recycling the console
Back up settings and reset the console before handing it over, then remove the device from your Microsoft account. Resetting clears personal information from the console; removing the listing is a separate account-management step. Microsoft’s cited reset guidance specifically describes Xbox One, so use the current reset instructions for your console generation rather than assuming every Xbox has identical menus. If you need to free a Microsoft Store device slot
Microsoft allows downloads of Store apps and content on up to 10 attached devices. To release a slot, sign in to the Microsoft account devices/content page and choose Unlink for a device. Microsoft says the unlinked device no longer counts toward the limit, but downloading an app or game on that device later can make it count again. This is about the Store device limit, not moving or deleting the Xbox profile. Open Microsoft’s device-management guidance.

If you mean closing the Microsoft account
Account closure affects more than an Xbox device. Microsoft’s process asks you to sign in, review the closure checklist, select a 30- or 60-day reopening period, and mark the account for closure. If you reset all sign-in verification details, Microsoft says you must wait 60 days before closing the account. During the selected window, you can reopen the account by signing in and entering a security code. Once that period passes, the account is permanently deleted and its data and content are deleted. Check subscriptions and purchases before closure
Confirm which Microsoft account owns your Xbox or Microsoft subscriptions and review its Services & subscriptions page before you proceed. If you reopen the account, Microsoft says remaining subscription time is available, but time spent pending closure is not restored. A subscription that expired or was cancelled outright must be repurchased; other subscriptions cancelled before closure may need to be reinstated through their original service or provider.
