To deploy an SSTP server, first choose Windows Server RRAS or SoftEther, then configure a reachable endpoint on TCP 443, a trusted certificate whose identity matches the hostname clients use, and a plan for authentication and access to the private network. The details differ by implementation; SSTP’s use of HTTPS does not guarantee that every firewall or network path will allow a connection.
What SSTP does
Microsoft’s Open Specifications document describes SSTP as “a mechanism to transport data-link layer (L2) frames on a Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Sockets Layer (HTTPS) connection.” In practice, a client establishes an HTTPS connection using TLS to reach the SSTP server. Microsoft’s protocol overview also depicts a design in which a TLS load balancer terminates TLS before forwarding traffic to the SSTP server. That intermediary changes the connection architecture, so configure it according to the protocol requirements rather than assuming an ordinary web proxy will work. Microsoft SSTP protocol overview.
Choose an SSTP server implementation
| Path | What the documentation establishes | Key decision |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Server RRAS | Microsoft lists SSTP among RRAS VPN protocols. New RRAS setups on Windows Server 2025 continue to accept SSTP connections; the changed new-setup defaults concern PPTP and L2TP. Microsoft also says SSTP can be selected instead of IKEv2. | Use this route when Windows Server RRAS fits your host environment and administration model. These statements apply to RRAS, not all SSTP server software. Microsoft RRAS documentation. |
| SoftEther VPN Server | SoftEther documents an SSTP server clone function compatible with built-in Windows SSTP clients. Its remote-access manual describes administering a Linux-hosted server and connecting a virtual hub to a destination LAN through a local bridge. | Use this route when SoftEther’s cross-platform server and network design suit your environment. Check the target release for the required SSTP client and server behavior. SoftEther documentation. |
Compare the options against your existing server platform, identity and authentication needs, certificate lifecycle, LAN routing or bridging design, and maintenance responsibilities. The cited documentation does not establish a complete feature-by-feature benchmark between RRAS and SoftEther.
Prerequisites to plan before deployment
A hostname and trusted certificate
Choose the public hostname clients will use, and ensure the certificate identity matches it. SoftEther’s SSTP guidance says the server certificate common name must match the hostname specified by the client and that the certificate must be in the client’s trusted list. If you use a self-signed certificate, clients must explicitly trust it. Plan how you will issue, renew, and distribute trust for the certificate; a hostname mismatch or untrusted certificate can prevent clients from establishing the expected secure connection. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A reachable SSTP endpoint
Microsoft’s protocol material identifies TCP port 443 for the initial SSTP client connection. Configure firewall rules and NAT forwarding for the endpoint you actually deploy, and account for any TLS proxy or load balancer in the path. The use of HTTPS and TLS alone does not mean a connection will pass through every firewall. Microsoft SSTP protocol overview and Microsoft RRAS documentation.
A private-network access design
Decide how connected clients should receive addresses and reach the intended internal resources. SoftEther’s remote-access manual presents one design: create a virtual hub and connect it to the destination LAN with a local bridge. That is a SoftEther example, not a requirement for every SSTP server. Choose routing or bridging to suit the LAN and limit access to the resources remote users need. SoftEther remote-access manual.

Implementation-specific authentication
SoftEther lists PAP and MS-CHAPv2 as authentication methods for its SSTP server clone function. Do not treat that list as a universal SSTP configuration or as instructions for RRAS; check the documentation for the selected server release and its authentication integration. SoftEther SSTP specification.
Deployment outline
- Select the server. Choose Windows Server RRAS or SoftEther based on your host environment and administrative requirements. For SoftEther, confirm the target release supports the SSTP behavior your clients require. Consult the RRAS documentation or SoftEther manual.
- Set the public identity. Decide on the hostname clients will use and provision a certificate trusted by those clients, with an identity matching that hostname. For SoftEther, follow its SSTP certificate guidance.
- Make the endpoint reachable. Configure the server and perimeter network to accept the SSTP client connection over TCP 443. If TLS terminates at an intermediary, ensure its forwarding arrangement matches the SSTP architecture described in the Microsoft protocol overview.
- Configure remote access. Set up the chosen implementation’s authentication, client address assignment, and routing or bridging to the intended LAN. SoftEther’s virtual-hub/local-bridge arrangement is one documented design, not the only possible topology. Check the selected release’s documentation for its exact options.
- Configure and verify a client. Use the same hostname and a certificate chain the client trusts. Test that the client connects and can reach only the internal resources intended for remote access; troubleshoot certificate identity, trust, endpoint reachability, authentication, and LAN connectivity separately.
What to verify when a connection fails
- Certificate errors: Confirm that the client uses the hostname matching the server certificate identity and trusts its issuing certificate, including any self-signed certificate you chose to use.
- Connection timeouts: Check that TCP 443 reaches the intended endpoint through firewall rules and NAT, and review any TLS-terminating intermediary in the path.
- Authentication failures: Verify the selected server’s configured authentication method and credentials. SoftEther’s documented PAP and MS-CHAPv2 methods apply to its SSTP clone function, not automatically to RRAS.
- Connected but unable to reach the LAN: Review client address assignment and the server-side routing or bridging path. For SoftEther’s documented example, check the virtual hub and local bridge connection to the destination LAN.
Use the official documentation for the exact server release and network topology before applying version-specific settings; the outline above identifies decisions and checks, not a tested installation recipe for every platform.
