For reliable live-stream audio, build a clear path from each sound source into OBS, set levels at the source before adjusting software controls, and monitor both the input and the finished mix. Keep a USB-microphone setup simple unless you need an interface for XLR or instrument inputs, additional routing, direct monitoring, or loopback.
Choose the audio path that fits your production
Start by deciding which sounds need to reach the stream: typically a microphone, application or game audio, music, alerts, or a digital audio workstation (DAW) mix. Each source should have a deliberate route into OBS, with independent control where the production needs it.
| Workflow | When it fits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| USB microphone connected directly to the computer | One speaker and a small number of audio sources. | Simple to set up, but offers fewer separate hardware inputs and routing options. |
| XLR microphone connected to a USB audio interface | You need an XLR or instrument input, interface monitoring, or more control over inputs and outputs. | Adds hardware, cabling, and gain and routing controls; choose an interface that supports your specific inputs and workflow. An XLR connection alone does not guarantee better sound. |
| DAW audio routed to OBS through interface loopback | Your music production or other DAW audio needs to join the stream mix. | A virtual route can be convenient when supported, but the configuration depends on the interface, DAW, and operating system. |
| Two-interface routing | A possible workaround when the interface does not offer loopback. | PreSonus documents routing its Studio One output through a second interface using two TRS cables. This is a specific Studio One-on-Windows workflow, not a universal requirement; it adds equipment and setup complexity. |
When choosing an interface, weigh the number and type of inputs and outputs, whether you need direct monitoring or loopback, which operating system and software you use, and whether sources need separate level controls. Ableton describes common interface capabilities such as multiple inputs and outputs and direct monitoring in its audio interface setup guide.
Connect the microphone or interface in OBS
USB microphone
- Connect the microphone to the computer and make it the input device for the application or source you intend to use.
- In OBS, add or select an audio input for that microphone. Speak at a normal level and confirm that its meter responds.
- If the microphone has a headphone or monitor output, listen there as an early check for connection, placement, and input-level problems.
Microphone through an interface
- Connect the microphone to the intended interface input, then connect the interface to the computer.
- In OBS, add an Audio Input Capture source and select the interface. Focusrite’s OBS setup instructions describe this approach for its interfaces.
- If a single microphone input arrives as a stereo pair with sound on only one side, open OBS’s Advanced Audio Properties for that source and enable Mono to center the signal, as Focusrite recommends for a single-input setup.
- If available, use the interface’s direct-monitoring feature to hear the microphone before it passes through the computer. Then separately monitor the signal in OBS so you also check the software path.
Do not add an interface just because you use OBS. A USB microphone may be all a small production needs; an interface becomes useful when its inputs, monitoring, or routing solve a concrete requirement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Route DAW audio or other sources without doubling them
Keep the microphone feed distinct from a DAW return when you need separate control. For music production, a supported loopback route can send the DAW mix to OBS while the microphone remains its own source. PreSonus documents a Studio One and OBS workflow on Windows that routes a virtual stereo output into OBS. Its guide also describes routing the main outputs into a second interface with two TRS cables when loopback is unavailable: PreSonus’s Studio One and OBS guide.
That example depends on the software and hardware involved. Check your interface and DAW documentation for their supported loopback paths rather than assuming that a virtual route or the two-interface workaround applies to every setup.

- List every source viewers should hear: microphone, game or application audio, music, alerts, and DAW return.
- Give each source one intended path into the mix. If the same sound arrives through a dedicated OBS source and desktop capture, it can be doubled.
- Check that a mono voice is centered where appropriate and that no source overwhelms speech.
Set levels at the source, then check OBS
Set the microphone or device level before relying on OBS faders. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide puts it plainly: “Always start at the device in question.” Adjust the originating device, then check the OBS meter and listen to the OBS signal. If the device has a headphone or monitor output, use it to catch problems early in the chain as well.
Keep the final stream or recording below 0 dBFS, the digital ceiling described in OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details. A signal at or above that ceiling in the final digital output can distort. Do not judge levels only by whether the source meter moves; listen to the finished mix.

- Speak normally and adjust the input level at the microphone, interface, or device.
- Check the OBS meter while speaking at the loudest level you expect during the stream.
- Listen to the signal through OBS monitoring, not only through the microphone or interface’s direct monitor.
- Make a short recording with ordinary speech, music or application audio, and the loudest expected moments. Listen back before going live and correct clipping, imbalance, doubling, or unintelligible speech.
Add OBS filters only to solve an audible problem
Filters can help, but their settings depend on the voice, room, microphone, and mix. Add one change at a time and listen to both normal and quiet speech before keeping it.
Compressor for loud peaks
OBS’s Compressor Filter can lower louder peaks and is typically placed near the beginning of a filter chain. Its sidechain option can also duck desktop audio under a microphone. Use compression to address uneven peaks, not as a substitute for setting a sensible input level.

Expander for low-level sound
An expander can reduce low-level sound more smoothly than a gate, according to OBS’s Expander Filter guidance. Set its threshold carefully: too high a threshold can cut off quiet words. Test the effect with normal and soft speech rather than judging it during loud moments alone.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your production is an uploaded recording or playlist that should keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is a different workflow from producing a live microphone mix in OBS. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the cloud stream to run.
- Every slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
