A regular expression, or regex, is a pattern for finding or processing text. Its symbols can describe literal characters, character sets, repetition, alternatives and position. The details vary between programming languages and tools, so each example below names its flavor. “Regular Expressions 101” is also the name of Regex101, a web-based tester; here it refers to the tutorial topic.

What is a regular expression?

A regular expression is compact notation that describes a text pattern. A program or tool applies that pattern to text using its own regex engine and APIs. For example, the JavaScript pattern /cat/ finds the literal sequence “cat” within a larger string. It does not, by itself, require that the whole input consist of those three letters.

Regex syntax is useful for searching, extracting, replacing and checking text, but a pattern is not a complete specification on its own: you also need to know which engine interprets it and which operation applies it.

How do I match characters and digits?

Character classes

In JavaScript regex syntax, square brackets define a character class: [aeiou] matches one lowercase vowel, while [0-9] matches one digit from 0 through 9. A range such as [a-z] represents a contiguous range of characters. Put ^ immediately after the opening bracket to negate a class: [^0-9] matches one character other than an ASCII digit.

JavaScript shorthand classes include d for [0-9], w for [A-Za-z0-9_], and s for whitespace, including several Unicode spaces. These definitions are engine-specific; do not assume that shorthand classes have identical Unicode behavior everywhere.

The dot

In JavaScript, . matches one character other than a line terminator by default. DotAll behavior changes that rule so the dot can match line terminators too. Therefore, “any character” is only an accurate description when the applicable mode and input conditions support it.

How do I match a sequence of digits?

In JavaScript, /d+/ finds one or more consecutive ASCII digits anywhere in text. The + applies to the preceding item, d, so the match must contain at least one digit. For example, it can find 482 in order 482 shipped.

Quantifiers control how many times the preceding character, class or group can occur:

  • * means zero or more.
  • + means one or more.
  • ? means zero or one, making the preceding item optional.
  • {m,n} means at least m and at most n repetitions.

Quantifiers are generally greedy: they try to match as much as possible while still allowing the whole pattern to succeed. In Python’s re flavor, <.*> can span from the first opening angle bracket through the last closing one in a string containing multiple bracketed sections. Changing it to <.*?> makes the repetition minimal, so it stops at the earliest closing bracket that lets the pattern match.

How do groups and alternatives work?

Parentheses group parts of a pattern, and a capturing group also retains the substring it matched. The vertical bar | means “or.” In JavaScript, /gr(a|e)y/ matches either gray or grey; the parentheses capture the vowel. Grouping also lets a quantifier apply to a whole sequence, as in /(ha)+/, which matches one or more repetitions of ha.

Some flavors offer noncapturing groups when grouping is needed but the substring does not need to be saved. For example, JavaScript supports (?:...). Capture and grouping features can differ across engines, so check the target flavor before relying on them.

How do I control where a match occurs?

Anchors and boundaries constrain a match by position without consuming a character. In JavaScript, ^ asserts the start of input and $ the end; multiline mode changes how these assertions behave in text with line breaks. For example, /^cat$/ matches an input consisting of cat, rather than merely finding those letters inside a longer string, subject to the engine’s line and flag behavior.

The word boundary b asserts a position between a word character and a non-word character, or a corresponding edge of the input. It does not match a character itself. What counts as a word character depends on the engine; Python defines its boundary in relation to w and W.

How do I match a literal regex symbol?

Characters such as * have special meanings in a pattern. To match an asterisk literally in a JavaScript regex, escape it: /a*b/ matches the characters a*b. If you construct the pattern from a JavaScript string instead of writing a regex literal, the string parser adds another escaping layer: new RegExp("a\*b") creates the same pattern.

When a pattern behaves unexpectedly, check both layers: the regex syntax and, if applicable, the host language’s string-literal syntax.

How do I make a regex match the whole input?

Finding a match somewhere in a string and validating the entire string are different tasks. In Python’s re module, the methods make that distinction explicit:

Python operation What it checks For pattern d+ and input order 482 shipped
re.search() Scans through the string for a match. Finds 482.
re.match() Checks for a match at the beginning of the string. Does not match because the input starts with letters.
re.fullmatch() Requires the entire string to match. Does not match because the input contains more than digits.

Python’s match() remains tied to the beginning of the string even in multiline mode. If the requirement is whole-input validation, use an operation that enforces that requirement rather than a search that could accept a matching substring. Also define exactly what the input is allowed to contain: a regex that finds a date-like or email-like substring is not automatically a complete validator for every date or email requirement.

What do JavaScript regex methods return?

JavaScript exposes several operations with different outcomes. test() returns a Boolean; exec() returns match information or null; search() returns the match’s index or -1; and replace() returns text with matched content replaced. Choosing the right method is part of defining the task, not a change to the pattern’s syntax.

Why does my regex work in one language but not another?

Regex flavors differ in syntax, flags, character-class and Unicode behavior, and the APIs available for searching or requiring a full match. Even where two engines accept the same-looking pattern, their surrounding methods can give it different practical effects. Name the language or engine in examples, then test the pattern in the runtime that will actually use it.

Regex101 is a web-based editor, tester, debugger and reference with a flavor selector. Its site lists PCRE2, JavaScript, Python, Go, Java, .NET, Rust, POSIX ERE/BRE and legacy PCRE. It can help inspect captures or investigate a pattern, but selecting a flavor in an online tester does not replace testing in the target application or language runtime.

Where can I learn more?

MDN’s JavaScript regular expressions guide explains JavaScript patterns and syntax, and its regular expressions cheat sheet is a concise reference. Python’s regular expression documentation describes the re module and its supported constructs.

For a longer reference, Regular Expressions Cookbook, 2nd Edition by Jan Goyvaerts and Steven Levithan is an intermediate-to-advanced book. Its official book information describes 146 recipes across C#, Java, JavaScript, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby and VB.NET; the edition dates to August 2012, so treat it as a reference rather than a current guide to every engine’s latest behavior. Pearson describes Ben Forta’s Learning Regular Expressions as a hands-on tutorial that progresses from simple matches to more advanced constructs with examples in multiple languages. Check edition availability before choosing either book.
