Regression testing checks that a software change has not damaged previously working behavior. Non-regression testing is usually another team’s label for that same objective, not a universally separate testing method. The standardized term in ISTQB terminology is “regression testing.”
Do not confuse either term with confirmation testing (often called retesting): confirmation asks, “Did the fix work?” Regression asks, “What else did the change affect?”
Regression testing and non-regression testing in plain English
When developers modify software, two different questions must be answered:
- Confirmation testing: Does the changed feature or fixed defect now behave correctly?
- Regression testing: Did the modification cause failures in unchanged or related areas?
ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 describes regression testing as testing after a modification to identify failures in unmodified parts of the test item. ISTQB’s Certified Tester Foundation Level v4.0 (2023) says it confirms that a change caused no adverse consequences, including after a fix has already been confirmation tested.

Some engineering teams and research papers use non-regression testing (NRT) for this second activity. The JOREK research report (Latu et al., 2012) defines NRT as checking whether software modifications result in undesired behavior. Treat “non-regression” as a local synonym unless your organization has documented a narrower meaning.
Is non-regression testing just another name for regression testing?
In practical software delivery, usually yes. Both names describe checking unaffected behavior after a change. The difference is terminology, not a reliably different test design.
“Non-regression” emphasizes the desired outcome—no regression. “Regression testing” is the established term used in testing standards and the ISTQB glossary. If a contract, quality plan, or team convention uses NRT, define it explicitly so nobody assumes it is a separate lifecycle stage.

A bug fix can require both. First rerun the steps that demonstrated the original defect. Then exercise workflows, integrations, data paths, and environments that could have been affected by the implementation.

- Emergency hot fixes
- Operating-system, browser, database, runtime, or infrastructure upgrades
- Cloud, hosting, or deployment-environment migrations
- Changes to configuration, schemas, dependencies, APIs, authentication, or build tools
Regression is not restricted to one test level or to functional assertions. Depending on risk, it can include component, integration, system, acceptance, performance, security, usability, compatibility, and structural tests.
How to decide how much regression testing to run
1. Perform impact analysis
Map the changed code and configuration to components, interfaces, data flows, databases, queues, external services, user roles, and deployment environments. Ask which apparently unchanged behavior shares code, state, permissions, resources, or contracts with the change.
2. Classify the change risk
Consider the criticality of the affected business function, the size and complexity of the system, the size of the change, the number of dependencies, and the confidence you have in isolation. A payment authorization change deserves broader coverage than a copy edit in an isolated help page.
3. Choose a scope
- Targeted regression: Directly related interfaces and high-risk paths. Suitable for a small, well-understood change.
- Partial regression: A risk-selected slice covering connected components, critical user journeys, and recently fragile areas.
- Broad regression: Most or all of the maintained suite across relevant levels. Appropriate for large cross-cutting changes, release candidates, and platform migrations.
4. Record the rationale
Document what changed, what was analyzed, which tests were selected, excluded risks, environment versions, and unresolved failures. This makes a “small regression” an auditable decision rather than an arbitrary number of tests.

Build the suite around stable, high-value checks rather than every test ever written. Include:

- Contract tests for APIs and event schemas
- Integration tests for changed dependencies and shared services
- Authorization, data-integrity, and migration checks
- Previously escaped defects and historically unstable areas
- Compatibility checks for supported browsers, devices, operating systems, and database versions
- Non-functional checks when the change can affect latency, capacity, security, accessibility, or resilience
Keep tests deterministic, isolate test data, and remove obsolete cases. A growing suite that produces unexplained failures becomes less useful than a smaller suite with clear ownership and reliable diagnostics.
Automating regression testing in CI/CD
ISTQB notes that regression suites are run many times, generally increase with each iteration or release, and are strong candidates for automation. In a continuous-integration or DevOps workflow, run the fastest, most local checks first, then broaden coverage as the build progresses.
- Pull request: Run unit, component, lint, and focused contract tests.
- Integration stage: Exercise changed services, databases, queues, and external-service fakes.
- Staging: Run critical end-to-end, browser, API, and selected non-functional checks.
- Release or scheduled run: Execute the broader cross-platform and migration suite.
Publish test artifacts, screenshots, logs, traces, and environment metadata. Quarantine a flaky test only with an owner and deadline; silently excluding failures turns regression into false reassurance. The JOREK report likewise treats automating NRT as important for keeping a source repository healthy.
Practical example: a web UI change
Suppose a checkout team changes address validation. Confirmation tests submit valid and invalid addresses that previously exposed the bug. Regression analysis then covers tax calculation, shipping quotes, payment authorization, order persistence, mobile layouts, keyboard navigation, and the supported browser matrix. A visual check of checkout pages can reveal a CSS or responsive-layout side effect that API tests cannot see.
Do-it-yourself browser capture for visual regression
For a local baseline, open the page in a controlled browser, set a fixed viewport and device scale, wait for fonts and asynchronous content, dismiss consent UI, and save a full-page image. Compare the new capture with the approved baseline using a pixel or perceptual diff. Keep browser version, viewport, locale, timezone, feature flags, test data, and network stubs consistent; otherwise environmental noise will look like a product change.

- Start a clean test environment and seed deterministic data.
- Set the same viewport, device scale, locale, timezone, and color scheme used for the baseline.
- Navigate to the route and wait for a stable selector or network-idle condition.
- Accept or remove cookie notices and hide transient chat, ad, and newsletter elements.
- Capture the full page or the specific element under test.
- Compare against the baseline, inspect meaningful differences, and approve only intentional changes.

“The regression suite is too slow.”
Split tests by feedback time, parallelize independent jobs, remove redundant cases, and run the broad suite on a schedule or release gate. Do not omit high-risk paths solely because they are slow; optimize or isolate them.

Compare browser, operating-system, timezone, locale, fonts, database state, feature flags, network access, and service versions. Capture logs and screenshots from the failing environment before changing the test.

“Visual diffs change on every run.”
Stabilize fonts, animations, timestamps, randomized content, ads, consent dialogs, chat widgets, and responsive dimensions. Wait for a deterministic readiness condition instead of an arbitrary short delay.
“Everything is green, but users still report regressions.”
Revisit impact analysis and production-like data. Add a test for the escaped behavior, verify that the suite actually ran against the changed build, and include connected systems or supported configurations that were previously excluded.
“A test fails after an intentional UI change.”
Review the diff against the requirement, update the baseline only after approval, and record why the change is expected. Never bulk-approve visual or functional failures without inspection.

How regression testing differs from retesting after a bug fix
Retesting is proof that the reported defect no longer reproduces under the relevant conditions. Regression testing is evidence that the repair did not break other behavior. A successful retest therefore does not justify skipping regression; the implementation may share validation, persistence, permissions, rendering, or integration code with unrelated features.
Bottom line
Use “regression testing” in formal documentation unless your organization defines “non-regression testing” otherwise. Select its scope through impact and risk analysis, automate repeatable checks in CI, and combine confirmation of the change with checks for unintended effects. The right question is not how many tests were run, but whether the changed and connected risk was covered with reliable evidence.

Who decides the regression-test scope?
