Regression testing checks whether a software change has broken behavior that previously worked. The best regression plan is not the biggest test suite: it is a risk-based set of checks tied to the change, its dependencies, and the cost of running and maintaining those checks. Combine repeatable automated tests with human exploration where automation cannot confidently cover the product’s behavior.
What regression testing checks
A regression test checks for unintended effects of a change: a feature that used to work now fails, a different workflow behaves differently, or an integration no longer produces the expected result. Changes include new features, bug fixes, refactoring, configuration updates, dependency upgrades, and infrastructure changes. A small code diff can still affect a broad surface if it changes shared logic or a widely used dependency.
Regression testing is related to, but not identical to, confirmation testing. Confirmation testing checks whether a particular reported defect has been fixed. Regression testing checks whether the fix—or any other change—has adversely affected existing behavior. A good bug-fix test often serves both purposes: first it reproduces the defect, then it remains in the suite to guard against its return.
Testing cannot prove that no regression exists. It provides evidence about the behavior covered by the selected tests, in the environments where they ran. The practical goal is to make the remaining risk visible and acceptable, not to claim exhaustive certainty.

How to choose regression tests after a code change
Start with the change, not with a default instruction to run everything. Build scope from what changed, which behaviors and dependencies could be affected, the impact of failure, and the time and maintenance cost of the checks. ISTQB’s Advanced Level Agile Tester syllabus v2.0, released April 17, 2026, describes recurring risk assessment as a way to direct manual and automated regression effort toward areas more likely to fail.
- Identify changed behavior and boundaries. List modified components, interfaces, data structures, configuration, permissions, and external services. Consider both direct callers and consumers of shared code.
- Map affected user and system paths. Trace the change into important workflows: for example, a pricing calculation may affect checkout, invoices, refunds, and reports. Ask which paths rely on the changed contract, not only which files changed.
- Rate risk. Consider the likelihood of failure and its consequence: customer or safety impact, data loss, security exposure, revenue, frequency of use, and difficulty of detecting a problem after release. Record assumptions where impact or dependencies are uncertain.
- Select checks by strength and speed. Prefer the fastest reliable check that exercises the relevant behavior, then add broader integration or end-to-end coverage where interactions matter. Include negative cases and boundary values when the change could affect them.
- Set a stopping and escalation rule. Define which failures block integration or release, who reviews an exception, and which higher-cost checks run later. A skipped test should be a conscious risk decision, not an invisible pipeline default.
A simple change-to-test note can make the decision reviewable: “Changed: shared tax rounding. Risks: checkout totals and invoice totals diverge. Checks: unit boundary cases, API invoice test, checkout smoke flow. Remaining risk: jurisdiction-specific configuration not covered in this run.” Tailor the detail to the risk; the point is to connect a test selection to a reason.
When to run the full suite
Run the broadest relevant suite before high-impact releases, after changes with wide or uncertain reach, and on a cadence that catches interactions missed by per-change checks. If a full run is too slow or costly for every commit, use a fast high-priority subset on each change and schedule broader coverage at integration, pre-release, or overnight stages. A selective run is not equivalent to a full run: make that limitation explicit in release decisions.

Regression techniques and where each fits
| Technique | What it does | Useful when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Risk-based selection | Uses recurring risk assessment to prioritize areas and direct automated and manual effort. | The complete suite cannot run on every change, or failure consequences vary substantially. | Risk rankings become stale if they are not revisited as the product and its dependencies change. |
| Incremental regression | Selects checks in relation to a particular change and its affected areas. | Fast feedback is needed after a code change or integration. | Hidden dependencies and shared components can make a narrow file-based selection misleading. |
| CI/CD-oriented regression | Places selected checks at stages in the delivery pipeline, from fast gates to broader pre-production checks. | Teams need repeatable feedback tied to commits, pull requests, or deployments. | Flaky tests, slow feedback, or unclear failure ownership can make a gate unhelpful. |
| Exploratory regression | Uses a tester’s observation and judgment to investigate interactions and unexpected behavior. | Automation is incomplete, behavior is complex, or a change creates unfamiliar combinations. | Without notes or follow-up tests, useful discoveries may not be repeatable. |
These approaches solve different problems and can be combined. Risk-based selection answers what deserves attention; incremental selection connects checks to a change; pipeline placement controls when feedback arrives; exploration looks for failures that scripted checks did not anticipate.

Give an exploratory session a charter tied to the change, such as “probe account recovery after the authentication update, including expired links and multiple open sessions.” Note the environment, paths tried, and any unexpected result. Convert stable, valuable findings into automated checks where practical; keep human investigation for ambiguous behavior and combinations that are difficult to encode economically.
Monitoring after deployment
Monitoring can contribute to validation in some delivery settings, and the ISTQB syllabus notes it may replace traditional regression testing in some cases. That is not a universal substitute: monitoring observes behavior in the running system and may only reveal a problem after exposure. Decide explicitly what signals are monitored, how quickly they detect an issue, and what mitigation or rollback follows. Do not treat the existence of dashboards as evidence that untested behavior is safe.

Design a maintainable automated regression suite
Automation is lifecycle work, not a one-time scripting task. ISTQB’s CTAL-TAE v2.0 coverage includes infrastructure and strategy evaluation, modular design, pilot planning, implementation, maintenance, CI/CD integration, reporting, and continuous improvement. The CT-TAS framework addresses test-automation strategy at an organizational level.
- Keep checks focused. A test should have a clear purpose and a useful failure message. Avoid making every assertion depend on a long, fragile journey when a lower-level check can verify the same contract.
- Choose stable boundaries. Use the appropriate level—unit, API, integration, UI, or system—for the behavior at risk. UI checks are useful for user-visible workflows but usually cost more to execute and diagnose than narrow component checks.
- Manage test data and environments. Control prerequisites, cleanup, shared state, and external dependencies. If a failure cannot be reproduced because inputs or environment drift, the check provides weak feedback.
- Review failures, not just pass rates. Capture enough context to distinguish a product defect from a test defect or environment problem. Assign ownership for triage and repair.
- Retire or repair low-value checks. Repeatedly flaky, redundant, or irrelevant tests consume attention. Investigate their cause, fix them, quarantine them with a visible owner and deadline, or remove them with a documented risk decision.
Measure whether the suite gives useful feedback, rather than optimizing for a raw count of tests. Useful signals include time to actionable result, failure reproducibility, areas not covered by relevant checks, and how often teams must investigate test infrastructure rather than product behavior.

Playwright as one browser-testing example
Playwright’s official CI documentation shows browser tests running on pushes and pull requests, with reports or traces retained as artifacts. Playwright recommends one worker in CI to prioritize stability and reproducibility, while documenting sharding for wider parallelization. Treat those as configuration guidance to validate against your runner capacity and suite behavior, not a universal performance setting. Reports and traces help with diagnosis, but teams still need to decide which failures block a change and who acts on them.
Visual checks are a component, not a whole regression strategy
Screenshot-based checks can help detect changes in rendered pages, but a captured image alone is not a regression verdict. A workflow also needs an agreed baseline, a comparison method, rules for acceptable differences, and review of dynamic content such as timestamps or rotating data. Visual checks complement assertions about functionality; they do not establish that a workflow, API contract, or business rule still works.

For browser tests, begin with a small set of high-value workflows and make the pipeline’s result inspectable. Playwright’s CI guidance is a concrete example rather than a claim that it is the only suitable framework.

- Run on change. Configure the CI workflow to execute the relevant browser checks on pushes and pull requests, as described in the Playwright CI guide.
- Start conservatively with concurrency. Playwright recommends one worker in CI for stability and reproducibility. If the suite needs more throughput, assess sharding and runner capacity rather than increasing parallelism blindly.
- Retain diagnostic artifacts. Keep the test report or trace artifacts where failures can be reviewed. Establish access and retention consistent with your CI setup.
- Set pipeline policy. Decide which checks are required for merge, which can be retried or quarantined, and what happens when CI infrastructure fails. Distinguish an inconclusive run from a passing run.
- Expand by evidence. Add tests for important regressions, recurring defects, and high-risk paths. Periodically remove redundant checks and reassess whether the suite remains representative.
Troubleshooting common failures
- A test passes locally but fails in CI: compare browser and dependency versions, environment variables, test data, permissions, and resource limits. Use retained reports or traces to identify where behavior diverged.
- Failures appear intermittent: look for shared state, order dependence, timing assumptions, and external services. Stabilize prerequisites before treating retries as a fix; retries can hide a real defect.
- The suite blocks delivery for too long: review which checks must run on each change, which can run later, and whether slow UI journeys can be covered by faster tests at an appropriate boundary. Preserve broad checks at a suitable release or integration stage.
- A visual comparison reports noisy differences: identify dynamic regions and environmental variation, establish explicit tolerances or masking rules in the comparison workflow, and inspect whether the difference could be user-visible. A screenshot capture service by itself does not decide whether two images are acceptably alike.
- Many checks fail after one change: separate the common dependency or environment failure from independent behavior regressions. Diagnose the shared cause before interpreting the number of failing tests as the number of defects.
Or skip the browser setup
If a visual regression workflow needs browser screenshots from a URL, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server—not a test runner or image-diff engine. A capture can supply an image for your separate baseline-comparison step. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the example below requests a WebP capture of a staging page. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://staging.example.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://staging.example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://staging.example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and whether the shot was billed. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. Free includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
