A referral leaderboard should award points when a referred person completes a defined, verifiable outcome—not when someone opens a link or views a page. Link opens can still help measure reach and diagnose a funnel, but they do not prove that a referral produced a qualified result.
The specific event names, attribution window and implementation details behind the first-person headline are not established here. The model below is a practical design, not a claim about settings or results from a particular build.
What earns a referral point?
Choose one business outcome that represents a real referral result, then award credit only after that outcome is verified. Depending on the business, that could be a completed, paid purchase or another confirmed event. A page view, link open, form start or incomplete checkout can be useful funnel data, but none should qualify by default.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep three events distinct:
- Reach: a person opens a referral link or visits its landing page. Use this to understand distribution and diagnose the funnel.
- Attribution: a person becomes associated with a referrer, such as when they submit a signup form through a referral page or provide a referral code.
- Qualification: the attributed person completes the outcome that earns leaderboard credit.
Referral Factory’s documentation distinguishes link reach, attribution and qualification; the qualification event depends on how a program is configured. That distinction matters: a captured referral is not automatically a successful one.

Define the credit rules before building the leaderboard
A leaderboard is the visible result of several policy decisions. Write those decisions down first so that participants, support staff and developers can arrive at the same answer when a credit is questioned.
1. Bind the referred person to a referrer
Decide what action establishes the relationship. For example, bind a person when they submit a signup form on a referral landing page, or when they enter a valid referral code during signup or checkout. Record the referrer and the referred person’s stable account or customer identifier at that point.
Do not treat the mere presence of a referral URL as proof that a person signed up through it. A URL can be opened without a form submission, and a browser may not preserve the information needed to connect a later signup to the original visit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Choose a qualifying outcome
Specify the exact event and its verification criteria. If the outcome is a purchase, decide whether it must be paid, whether cancellations or refunds invalidate it, and when it becomes eligible to appear on the leaderboard. If the business uses a different outcome, name the system event that confirms it.
Keep this rule stable during a contest or leaderboard period. Changing what counts partway through can make earlier and later referrals incomparable unless you clearly version the rules and show which version applies.

3. Set precedence when more than one referrer is involved
Choose how to resolve multiple links or codes. One understandable policy is to credit the last eligible referral interaction before signup, then lock the association once the person is bound. Another policy could preserve the first interaction. Either choice can be defensible; the important part is to disclose it and apply it consistently.
Published systems illustrate why there is no universal default. Invitebase documents last-click precedence before signup and one referral per user per campaign after attribution. WooCommerce documents a cookie-based last-click rule, with lifetime mapping taking precedence when enabled. Those are product-specific examples, not rules every referral program follows.

State whether the referred person must be new to the business, whether self-referrals are excluded, and how long after the attribution event the qualifying outcome can occur. Do not assume a standard window: WooCommerce documents a configurable cookie lifetime that defaults to 30 days when the setting is left empty in that plugin.
Make the window’s start and end events explicit. For example, a policy might measure from signup to purchase rather than from first link open to purchase. The appropriate period depends on the sales cycle and the program’s rules.
5. Prevent duplicate credit
Give each qualifying event a stable unique identifier, such as the source system’s order ID or a unique completion-event ID. Before awarding credit, check whether that event has already been processed. Repeated webhook deliveries, retries and reloads of a confirmation page should update or confirm the same result, not create another leaderboard point.

Google Privacy Sandbox’s documentation on preventing duplication in reports describes ignoring reports that have already been received. The same basic measurement concern applies to a leaderboard: a repeated signal is not necessarily a second conversion.

Attribution determines which touchpoint receives credit when several interactions precede a conversion. Shopify’s marketing-report documentation describes several models; they allocate credit differently.
| Model | How it assigns credit | What to consider for a referral leaderboard |
|---|---|---|
| First click | Credits the first tracked interaction. | Recognizes the earliest recorded referral touch, even if another referrer appears later. |
| Last click | Credits the last tracked interaction. | Rewards the most recent eligible touch; decide what happens if the final visit is direct. |
| Last non-direct click | Credits the last tracked interaction other than direct traffic. | Can retain credit for a prior referral when the person returns directly, if that is the chosen policy. |
| Any click | Can credit eligible touchpoints that participated in the journey. | Decide whether one conversion may award multiple people or channels credit. |
| Linear | Distributes credit across eligible touchpoints. | May suit multi-touch analysis, but fractional or shared credit can be harder to explain on a simple ranked leaderboard. |
A one-winner leaderboard is easiest to interpret when every qualified person can map to no more than one referrer for a given campaign. If you choose multi-touch credit, show how shared or fractional credit affects scores rather than presenting the total as if each conversion had a single owner.
Keep reach metrics separate from leaderboard points
Ignoring page views for credit does not require removing them from analytics. Keep funnel measures in separate fields or reports, such as link opens, landing-page visits, signup starts and completed signups. They help answer where people drop off and whether a referral is being shared. The leaderboard should show only the qualifying result and the credited referrer.
This separation prevents a common interpretation problem: a high number of link opens can indicate reach, but it does not establish that people signed up, purchased or completed another qualifying action.

Make credits auditable and handle tracking failures
Store enough event detail to reconstruct a score without relying on a browser’s current state. A useful record includes the campaign, referrer ID, referred-person ID, attribution event and timestamp, qualification event and timestamp, unique conversion ID, eligibility decision and any reversal or correction. Keep access and retention appropriate to the data you collect.
When a participant disputes a point, staff should be able to trace the qualifying event back to its source and see why the attribution rule selected that referrer. WooCommerce describes examining registered visits in an affiliate’s traffic view; Attribution’s documentation distinguishes raw events from modeled totals. These are examples of different audit views, not a requirement to use either product.
When a click is missing
Browser-based tracking is not infallible. WooCommerce notes that browser-side scripts may fail to record clicks when scripts are disabled or blocked. If a click was not captured, a later browser-only lookup may be unable to establish who referred the person. Decide in advance whether a valid code or another recorded event can establish attribution, and avoid silently assigning a referrer from incomplete evidence.
When checkout crosses domains
A payment processor or another site in a checkout journey can appear as a referral source if measurement is not configured for the journey. Google Analytics Help explains that it automatically recognizes domains traffic arrived from and reports them as referral-traffic sources; its guidance on unwanted referrals also covers payment processors and cross-domain measurement. Configure the measurement journey carefully: excluding a referral domain can change attribution, so it is not a substitute for deciding which referral should receive leaderboard credit.
A compact rule set to publish
Before launching, publish the answers to these questions in the program rules or leaderboard help text:
- What action binds a new person to a referrer?
- What exact verified event earns a point?
- How are multiple referral links or codes resolved?
- What eligibility requirements and time window apply?
- Can one person or conversion earn credit more than once?
- How are refunds, cancellations, self-referrals and suspected duplicate events handled?
- What evidence can participants provide if they believe a credit is missing?
Once these policies are settled, the score is straightforward: count distinct, eligible qualifying events attributed under the published precedence rule. Keep page views and link opens available for reach analysis, but do not let them inflate that count.
