Use a reference when a function requires a valid object and should keep referring to that object; use a pointer when “no object” is possible, the target may change, or explicit pointer operations are needed. Neither a reference nor a raw pointer, by itself, communicates ownership.

What is the difference between a reference and a pointer?

Both let code access an object located elsewhere, but C++ gives them different semantics. Microsoft Learn describes a reference as something that, like a pointer, stores an object’s address; unlike a pointer, an initialized reference cannot be changed to refer to another object or set to null. A pointer is a variable that stores an object’s memory address and can hold a null value.

Feature Reference Pointer
Initialization Must be initialized to designate an object. Microsoft Learn Can hold an object’s address or a null value. Microsoft Learn
Can it be redirected? No. It remains bound to the object it designated when initialized. Yes. Its stored address can be changed.
Access syntax Use ordinary object syntax, such as ref.member. Dereference it to access the object, such as ptr->member or (*ptr).member.
Can it represent absence? No—not as a valid initialized reference. Yes. A null pointer can represent “no object.”
Arithmetic and traversal References do not support pointer arithmetic. Pointer arithmetic is available where valid, including traversal within an array’s range. cppreference
Indirection types You cannot form a pointer to a reference or an array of references. Template reference collapsing is a separate rule. cppreference Pointer-to-pointer types, such as T**, are valid.
Ownership Does not express ownership or guarantee the object’s lifetime. A raw pointer also does not safely express ownership; use a smart pointer when ownership is intended. Microsoft Learn

When should you use a reference?

Use a reference when the function needs an object, rather than an optional object, and does not need to change which object it designates. For example:

void print(const std::string& text);

This parameter requires a string reference and prevents the function from modifying the string through that parameter. A const T& is also commonly used to avoid copying an argument. A reference does not extend the lifetime of every object it refers to, so the caller must ensure the object remains alive for the duration of its use.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When should you use a pointer?

Choose a pointer when the API needs to express an optional target, redirect the target, or perform operations that specifically require pointers. Microsoft Learn lists allocating heap objects, passing functions to other functions, and iterating through arrays or other data structures among common pointer uses.

  • Optional input: a null pointer can indicate that no object was supplied. The function should document and handle that state.
  • Changeable target: assign a different address to the pointer when it needs to designate a different object.
  • Low-level traversal or indirection: use pointers where pointer arithmetic or pointer-to-pointer forms are genuinely required, while respecting the valid range of the underlying objects.

How do references and pointers behave when assigned?

Assigning through a reference changes the referenced object’s value; it does not bind the reference to a different object. For example, after int& ref = first;, the statement ref = second; copies second’s value into first. The reference still designates first.

Assigning a pointer is different: it changes the address stored in the pointer. If int* ptr = &first;, then ptr = &second; makes ptr designate second.

What if a function needs to change the caller’s pointer?

One option is to pass a reference to the pointer:

void setPointer(int*& ptr, int& target) { ptr = ⌖ }

The parameter int*& is a reference to an int*, so assigning to ptr changes the caller’s pointer. A pointer-to-pointer parameter can also provide this double indirection, but uses a different call syntax. Microsoft Learn demonstrates the functional relationship between these approaches. Microsoft Learn: References to pointers

Are raw pointers still used in modern C++?

Yes, but a raw pointer should not be mistaken for an ownership-management tool. It remains useful for non-owning access and low-level operations. When code is responsible for owning a dynamically allocated object, use an appropriate smart pointer or other ownership facility instead of relying on a raw pointer to signal responsibility. Microsoft Learn warns that raw pointers can be a source of serious errors and points to smart pointers and related facilities.

Is a reference always a pointer internally?

That is not the right way to define a reference. C++ specifies reference behavior—such as binding to an object and not being reseatable—not a universal memory layout. A compiler may implement that behavior in a particular way, but implementation details are not a substitute for the language semantics.
