What Reddit announced in 2021
Reddit’s April 14, 2021 announcement made its previously private HackerOne program public. The company said the private program had run for three years and had produced $140,000 across 300 reports — Reddit, 2021, focused on the main reddit.com platform. Public participation was intended to let anyone capable of making a meaningful security contribution report findings.
Reddit framed privacy as a central reason for the work. In the launch post, its author, securimancer, wrote: “As we scale the program, our priority will remain focused on protecting the privacy of our user data and identities.”
What the program was for—and what it was not
A bug bounty program seeks security vulnerabilities that could put systems, accounts, or data at risk. It is not a general channel for reporting features that behave incorrectly but have no security impact. A normal product defect may deserve a support or feedback report, but it does not become a bounty-eligible security issue simply because something is broken.

Reddit’s 2021 interview cited cross-site scripting (XSS), business-logic problems, and cloud misconfiguration as examples of issue classes researchers had reported. Those examples describe the program at that time; they should not be treated as a current scope list. The specific assets, exclusions, severity rules, and submission requirements depend on the live policy.
How Reddit described its security workflow
Triage and investigation
In an April 2021 HackerOne interview, Reddit security lead Spencer Koch described an initial triage stage. HackerOne Triage could screen a submission and gather information needed to reproduce it; a senior Reddit security engineer would then investigate. Reddit’s security team worked with engineering teams to identify root causes and develop fixes.

Learning beyond individual fixes
Reddit CISO and VP of Trust Allison Miller said external reports could reveal recurring vulnerability patterns, helping the company add developer guardrails and improve earlier detection. She described the value of outside help this way: “There are never enough security engineers to go around, and so leveraging the smarts of independent security researchers frees up engineering cycles for other work, since we have that additional external help on testing.” This was Miller’s description of the program in 2021, not a claim about current staffing or workflow.
Feedback during feature development
The interview also described researchers testing features before launch when Reddit provided relevant testing context. As one historical example, a researcher identified a deleted-post rendering problem during an embed feature’s alpha test. That example illustrates how security review could inform product development; it does not establish what features are currently in scope.

Before testing or filing a report, read the live policy for authorized targets and permitted testing methods, and follow its submission instructions. Do not treat the historical issue examples or a past reporting channel as permission or current guidance. A security vulnerability should be reported through the channel and process the current policy specifies; an ordinary product problem belongs in an appropriate support or feedback channel.
