A Dutch study report describes an encouraging sequence of support for mothers and young children in domestic-violence shelters: NIKA parenting support followed by EMDR trauma treatment. The reported improvements concerned different outcomes—parenting sensitivity and mothers’ PTSD questionnaire scores—but the available account does not establish that either treatment caused the changes or that the results apply to survivors in other settings.
What did the study report?
Leiden University’s account of doctoral research by Willemien van den Dorpel and colleagues followed 52 women and their children, aged up to six, in Dutch domestic-violence shelters for 13 weeks. The care sequence was NIKA first, then EMDR. The account reports changes in parenting behavior and maternal PTSD questionnaire scores, but it is a news report rather than a full methods paper. It does not provide enough information to judge causal effects or how durable the changes were. Read the Leiden University account.
The report says 80% of the participating mothers had experienced some form of child abuse during their own childhood. That figure describes this study sample; it is not an estimate for mothers generally or for all survivors of intimate partner violence.

NIKA is short for Nederlandse Interventie Kortdurend op Atypisch opvoedgedrag, a Dutch short-term intervention focused on atypical parenting behavior. In the reported program, parents took part in five sessions: they were filmed playing with their child, then reviewed the footage with a therapist and received feedback.

The report gives an average parenting sensitivity score increase from 4 to 5 on a 1–9 scale. It describes 4 as insufficiently sensitive and 5 as sensitive. Researchers also reported a reduction in disrupted parenting behavior. These are reported averages; the account does not provide effect sizes, confidence intervals, or enough methodological detail to determine how robust the changes were.
Does EMDR help after intimate partner violence?
In this care sequence, mothers received EMDR after NIKA as trauma treatment. Their average score on a PTSD questionnaire reportedly fell from around 50 to 24; the account identifies 31 as the clinical cutoff score. The change is an observation in this cohort, not proof that EMDR caused the decline. The report provides no head-to-head comparison with another treatment and does not establish that EMDR is preferable for every survivor.

The researcher said trauma treatment did not appear to change parenting behavior. The distinction matters: the reported account suggests that trauma symptoms and parent-child interaction may need separate kinds of support. A parent might benefit from trauma treatment while still needing help with parenting, and some children may also need trauma treatment.

The findings are specific to mothers and young children staying in Dutch shelters, followed over 13 weeks, and should not be generalized automatically to all survivors, families, or care systems. The available account does not disclose the recruitment process, a control or comparison group, attrition, follow-up beyond 13 weeks, or full statistical analyses. Without those details, readers cannot assess whether the reported changes resulted from the interventions, how lasting they were, or how well they might transfer to other settings.

The study also does not test NIKA against EMDR. It reports them in sequence for different targets: NIKA addresses parent-child interaction and parenting behavior, while EMDR addresses trauma symptoms. The data as described do not support ranking their effectiveness.
What can make support difficult to access?
Van den Dorpel described barriers in the shelter context, including unstable or unsafe circumstances, complex legal and financial needs, crowded schedules, insurer concerns, and possible refusal of consent by another parent who has parental responsibility. These are barriers reported by the researcher, not universal legal or administrative rules. The report does not specify how often each barrier occurred or how requirements vary by location.

How common is domestic violence in the Netherlands?
WODC and CBS’s 2024 Prevalence Monitor says 9% of residents aged 16 and older experienced one or more forms of domestic violence in the preceding 12 months. This is a broad domestic-violence figure, not an intimate-partner-violence-only estimate: the monitor includes violence by family members as well as current or former partners. It relies on self-reported survey data and notes that some categories were operationalized differently across editions, which limits direct comparisons with earlier figures.
