AI coding agents can leave a Git workspace in a state that is hard to recover from: a broad reset may discard useful edits made earlier, while committing every agent turn can clutter project history. edio’s author describes a way to snapshot and restore individual turns; Git worktrees offer a different safeguard by giving concurrent tasks separate working directories. Neither approach guarantees that integrated code is correct.

Why an AI agent can make Git recovery difficult

The problem is not that Git has stopped working. It is that an agent’s latest edits may be mixed with earlier, still-useful work in the same workspace. Restoring the whole project to an older state can throw away those useful changes. Committing after every turn preserves checkpoints, but can make the project’s history noisy.

This is a possible workflow failure, not a measured claim about how often agents damage repositories. The practical question is how to preserve useful states and keep parallel work from colliding.

How edio describes per-turn snapshots

In his edio article, Dev Dhanadiya says edio uses Git’s low-level object machinery to capture workspace snapshots and stores them through refs in a private refs/edio/* namespace. The article describes a temporary index used to capture the workspace into a tree, followed by a chain of shadow commits. It says snapshots do not move the active branch and do not touch the main .git/index, allowing existing staged changes to be preserved.

According to the author, edio restore <turn> restores a previous turn and edio accept creates a conventional commit from the selected final state on the active branch. The author summarizes the relationship to Git this way: “edio does not replace Git.” This is the author’s account of the implementation, not an independent code audit. Check the current project documentation and back up important work before depending on a recovery tool.

What the five-millisecond claim does—and does not—establish

The headline of Dhanadiya’s article claims rollback in under five milliseconds, and its body says a restore can take five milliseconds. The page does not provide a benchmark environment, sample size, tested workload, or independent validation. Treat that number as a product performance claim, not a demonstrated guarantee for every repository or workspace.

When Git worktrees are a better fit

Git’s manual describes git worktree as a way to “Manage multiple working trees attached to the same repository.” A linked worktree has its own per-worktree state, including HEAD and an index, while most refs and repository data are shared, subject to documented exceptions. See the Git worktree manual.

That makes worktrees useful when multiple agents or tasks need separate directories and branches. They address concurrent workspace isolation, rather than preserving a sequence of earlier states inside one session. Separate directories reduce interference, but they do not guarantee that changes will be correct when integrated.

What a new worktree does not bring along automatically

Worktrees start from committed state. VS Code’s documentation notes that uncommitted tracked changes and ignored files are not copied into a new worktree by default. Its agent worktree guidance describes the isolation workflow and this setup caveat. Cursor likewise documents separate agent checkouts and recommends reviewing completed work before bringing it back; see its agent worktree documentation.

That means worktrees can require setup—such as installing dependencies—and an explicit integration step. If an agent needs local configuration or ignored files, arrange those separately rather than assuming the new checkout contains them.

Choose the safeguard that matches the failure

Need Per-turn snapshots as described for edio Git worktrees
Primary boundary Earlier workspace states within a session, according to the edio author’s description. A separate working directory per task, attached to the same repository.
Existing uncommitted or ignored files The author says a temporary index preserves existing staged changes while snapshots are taken; verify current behavior in the project documentation. Uncommitted tracked changes and ignored files are not copied into a new worktree by default, according to VS Code documentation.
How work returns to the main branch The author says edio accept creates a conventional commit from the selected final state. Review and integrate the task’s changes; Cursor recommends review before bringing completed work back.
Recovery-speed evidence The five-millisecond figure is the author’s product claim; the article supplies no reproducible benchmark details or independent measurement. The cited documentation explains worktree behavior, not a comparable rollback-speed benchmark.

These techniques can coexist: worktrees separate parallel tasks, while snapshots can help track earlier states within a session. Pick based on the risk you need to control, and review changes before integration; neither mechanism establishes that the resulting code is semantically sound.
