There is no single upload-speed minimum that guarantees a good livestream. Choose an encoder bitrate for your platform, resolution, frame rate, and codec, then make sure your connection can sustain it with spare capacity. Finally, test the actual stream: a speed test is only a snapshot, while stability matters throughout the broadcast.
What upload speed do you need to livestream?
Your upload connection carries the encoded stream from your computer to the platform’s ingest server. The number to plan around is the stream’s encoder bitrate, but that is not the same as the upload speed shown by an internet speed test. You need enough measured upload capacity to carry the bitrate reliably, with headroom for fluctuations and other network traffic.
For YouTube, use its current recommended encoder bitrate for your chosen settings as the starting target. The figures below are recommendations, not minimum ISP plan speeds. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance also varies by codec.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 recommended encoder bitrate | H.264 recommended encoder bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 4K/2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For example, a 1080p60 YouTube stream uses a different recommended bitrate depending on whether it is encoded in H.264 or AV1/H.265. Do not select an upload plan by treating one codec’s encoder target as a universal internet-speed requirement. YouTube transcodes streams into output formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need for your outgoing connection to carry the encoder’s stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to estimate whether your connection is fast enough
- Choose the destination and output settings. Decide the platform, resolution, frame rate, and codec before estimating bandwidth. Look up that platform’s current settings guidance rather than relying on a generic rule of thumb.
- Set the encoder bitrate from the platform guidance. For YouTube, use the relevant codec and resolution row above, along with CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval.
- Measure upload capacity, then leave room. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point for stream bitrate. This is a practical starting point, not a YouTube or Twitch requirement and not a guarantee of stability. Other devices, network traffic, and connection variation can use the remaining capacity. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
- Test under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate and a pre-event test with representative audio and movement. Watch the platform’s stream-health indicators while testing; Twitch broadcasters can use Twitch Inspector for bandwidth health testing.
- Adjust based on the test, not a single speed-test result. If the stream drops frames, reduce bitrate or test a different ingest server, then repeat the test with the same kind of content and network conditions you expect during the event.
How much upload speed do YouTube and Twitch need?
YouTube
YouTube publishes encoder bitrate recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec. These are settings for the outgoing stream, not a promise that an internet plan with the same advertised upload rate will be sufficient. Measure your connection and test the stream before an event.
Twitch
Twitch’s Developer documentation describes delivery over RTMP to an ingest server and points broadcasters to Twitch Inspector. Twitch Help’s indexed 1440p/60 guidance specifies 20 Mbps upstream without added server-side transcode support and 9 Mbps when that support is available. Those figures are conditional on the setup and feature availability, not universal Twitch minimums; verify requirements in the current creator dashboard before relying on them. Twitch’s March 29, 2017 blog recommended 3–6 Mbps for most streams at that time, with higher values toward the upper end for 1080p or more demanding games. That is historical advice, not a current universal Twitch limit. Its enduring practical point is that a stable stream at a lower resolution or bitrate is preferable to one that drops frames.
Why does a stream drop frames when the speed test looks fast?
A speed test reports performance during a short measurement; it does not show whether the route to the platform stays stable for an entire stream. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Configured bitrate is too high: Lower it and test again. A high peak speed does not guarantee that the connection can continuously sustain the encoder target.
- Wi-Fi is unstable: Try a wired Ethernet connection. It can improve the local link’s stability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your ISP.
- Server route or ingest issue: Test a different ingest server where the platform allows it, then check stream health again.
- VPN or network software interference: Temporarily investigate VPNs, network-prioritization software, or other network software that could interfere with streaming.
- Local connectivity problem: Check drivers and modem/router connectivity. OBS suggests restarting a modem/router as a troubleshooting step; if its diagnostics do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP before assuming new equipment is needed.
What if you want to stream pre-recorded video 24/7?
A continuous pre-recorded YouTube stream has a different operating concern from a one-off broadcast: the computer and connection doing the sending must remain available for the stream to continue. If you want a YouTube channel to stay live from uploaded videos without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for uploaded video, not camera broadcasts.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo runs from the cloud.
- Every slot streams your upload as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot.
