The workaround restores the Forward action for the affected top-toolbar layout.
What the Brave Android bug looks like
The regression appeared after Brave Android 1.96 for users who keep the address bar at the top and disable the bottom navigation toolbar. After opening a link and pressing Android’s system Back control, the three-dot menu can show another Back arrow where Forward should be.
Android’s system Back action still works, so the duplicate menu item is confusing rather than a total loss of browsing history. The Brave Community report lists version 1.96.59, and a separate October 2, 2026 report describes the same behavior.
Restore the Forward button
- Open Brave on Android.
- Tap the three-dot menu and choose Settings.
- Open Appearance.
- Turn on Enable bottom toolbar.
- Return to the page, open a link, press Android’s Back control, and check the three-dot menu again.
Reports indicate that the Forward action returns when the bottom toolbar is enabled. You can switch the toolbar back later, but the regression may return when the toolbar is moved to the top with the bottom toolbar disabled.

Which layouts are affected?
| Toolbar configuration | Three-dot menu after going Back | Practical result |
|---|---|---|
| Toolbar at top; bottom toolbar disabled | May show a second Back action instead of Forward | Forward is unavailable from that menu |
| Bottom toolbar enabled | Forward is reported to appear normally | Use this as the immediate workaround |
Version status
Brave’s official Android release notes list these builds:
| Build | Release date | What the notes establish |
|---|---|---|
| Brave Android 1.96.59 | September 24, 2026 | The affected configuration was reported on this build; the notes do not identify a fix. |
| Brave Android 1.96.60 | September 30, 2026 | The release notes shown do not name a fix for this toolbar regression; a dated user discussion reports it still affecting some installations. |
Install the newest Brave version offered through your normal app channel, but do not treat 1.96.60—or any later build—as a confirmed fix unless its release notes or a verified report specifically mention this issue. There is no established prevalence figure, and the evidence does not show that every Android installation is affected.

Why the wrong command appears
Brave team member Mattches acknowledged the official report on September 25, 2026: “Thank you for reporting this. I’m seeing the same thing.” The report connects the regression to issue #59205 and suggests that an earlier request may have used “backward” where “forward” was intended, overwriting the Forward mapping for the top-toolbar layout. That is a suspected implementation mistake, not a published Brave postmortem.
Are Android gestures a replacement?
Not reliably. A separate Brave issue notes that Chromium’s right-edge-goes-forward gesture-navigation flag expired, while Android’s Back gesture can take precedence. Gesture behavior therefore varies by device, Android navigation mode, and build; it should not be treated as a universal substitute for the missing menu command.

If the workaround does not help
- Confirm that Enable bottom toolbar is on, then fully close and reopen Brave.
- Check the exact Brave build under Settings and record your Android version.
- Search existing Brave Community reports before opening a new one.
- Submit the details through Brave Community or GitHub, including the toolbar setting, navigation mode, reproduction steps, and exact versions.
Changing the toolbar position is reversible. The available evidence does not support downgrading or sideloading an older Brave build as a recommended remedy.
