You can use Claude to plan and refine a WordPress navigation menu without asking it to edit your site. Have Claude propose a clear hierarchy from your real pages, then make and review the changes in WordPress. The key to avoiding an accidental header change is to identify the right editor, preview the result, and check WordPress’s save list before you commit changes to shared header elements.
What Claude can—and cannot—do for your WordPress menu
Claude can help turn your page list and priorities into a menu proposal: parent and child items, concise labels, and a checklist of destinations to verify. You can ask it to flag duplicate destinations, unclear labels, or a menu that looks too long. Its output is a draft, not a verified map of your website: Claude may not know which pages exist or which URLs are correct unless you provide that information.
Anthropic documents editable artifacts for items such as documents, code, and websites, and Projects for supplying uploaded context to chats. Those materials do not establish a direct Claude integration that edits WordPress navigation. Treat Claude as a planning assistant; make and review the actual changes in WordPress. A useful prompt for Claude
Give Claude the exact page names, their URLs, and the order or priorities you want visitors to follow. For example:

Propose a WordPress navigation menu using only the pages and URLs below. Group related pages under a parent only when it makes the menu easier to scan. Suggest concise menu labels, flag duplicate destinations or unclear labels, and return a hierarchy plus a link-checking list. Do not invent pages or URLs.
Review every suggested label, parent-child relationship, and URL yourself before entering it in WordPress.

Choose the WordPress editor that matches your theme
WordPress menu controls depend on the active theme and site setup. A block theme supports the Site Editor; classic themes may provide the Appearance → Menus screen. Hybrid features or plugins can affect what you see, so do not assume every WordPress site has the same controls. WordPress explains block themes and the Appearance Menus screen.

Build and review the menu in a block theme
- Open navigation controls. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance → Editor → Navigation, or open the relevant template or template part and select its Navigation block.
- Create or select a menu. You can create a blank menu, choose an existing one, or import a classic menu when that option is available. Creating a menu does not by itself put it in the header.
- Add and organize links. Add page links or custom links, edit each item’s displayed label and destination, and reorder items to match the hierarchy you planned with Claude.
- Create submenus only where useful. Nest related items under a parent using the Navigation block’s submenu controls. Check that the parent label and its children make sense to a visitor.
- Confirm the header uses the intended menu. In the relevant header Navigation block, verify that the selected menu is the one you just reviewed. A newly created menu will not automatically appear in the header unless the block uses it.
- Preview before saving. Use the Site Editor’s Preview control and inspect the menu in the header. Check relevant screen sizes and confirm labels, hierarchy, links, and submenu behavior are understandable.
- Review the save list. Before saving, inspect the items WordPress says have changed. The list can include navigation menus, templates, and template parts. Save only after you understand which items are included.
WordPress’s Site Editor documentation describes preview and the save flow. The same documentation cautions that shared structures such as Header and Footer template parts can affect every page that uses them. If the save list includes a shared header or template part, consider the scope before proceeding; do not treat a preview as proof that the change is isolated to one page.
If your site uses a classic theme
If Appearance → Menus is available, use that screen to manage the menu rather than following block-theme Site Editor steps that are not present in your dashboard. Availability and controls vary by theme and configuration. Review the menu location or assignment offered by your setup, then inspect the rendered site to confirm the intended menu appears where expected. Make the change only when the save scope is clear
“Ready” means you have checked the preview and read the complete list of items WordPress will save. If the menu edit also changes a shared Header template part, the impact may extend to multiple pages using that part. The Site Editor’s preview and selective save flow can help you inspect the pending changes, but WordPress’s documentation does not establish a universal unpublished-draft state for replacement headers across all configurations.
If your site owner already has a separately configured staging environment, that can provide a place to review changes away from the live site. Staging setup varies, so use the procedures for your hosting and site rather than assuming a particular workflow.

Verify the published navigation
After saving, visit the live site and test the menu as a visitor would: open each destination, check submenu interactions, and look at the header on relevant screen sizes. This final check can catch a wrong URL, an unexpected menu assignment, or a layout issue that was easy to miss in the editor.
